For most investors, Nifty 50 is the simplest large-cap core, Nifty 100 is the broadest one-index large-cap allocation, and Nifty Next 50 is a higher-risk satellite for deliberate exposure to the next tier of companies. The three indexes overlap by design: Nifty 100 combines Nifty 50 and Nifty Next 50, while Nifty Next 50 is the 50-stock remainder after Nifty 50 constituents are removed. All three use free-float market-capitalisation weighting, so their largest companies receive the largest weights rather than every constituent receiving an equal allocation.
The right choice depends on whether you prioritise established companies and liquidity, broader coverage in one holding, or a greater allocation to companies outside the front-line blue-chip index. The figures below are NSE Indices measures published for March 2026; constituents, weights and fund availability can change at later reviews.
At a glance: what each index actually owns
| Index | Construction | Companies represented | NSE free-float market-cap share | NSE traded-value share | Typical portfolio role |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nifty 50 | Diversified 50-stock index covering important sectors | 50 front-line large companies | 53.73% on March 30, 2026 | 29.24% for the six months ending March 2026 | Liquid, established large-cap core |
| Nifty Next 50 | The 50 Nifty 100 companies left after excluding Nifty 50 constituents | 50 companies in the next tier of the Nifty 100 | 11.22% on March 30, 2026 | The cited NSE profile does not provide a comparable figure | Growth-tilted satellite allocation for investors accepting higher liquidity and maturity risk |
| Nifty 100 | Top 100 companies by full market capitalisation from Nifty 500; tracks the combined Nifty 50 and Nifty Next 50 portfolio | 100 companies across both segments | 64.95% on March 30, 2026 | 40.93% for the six months ending March 2026 | One-index large-cap exposure spanning both groups |
The market-capitalisation percentages are not portfolio weights. They show how much of NSE’s free-float market capitalisation each benchmark represented on the stated date. Within an index, free-float weighting still gives larger companies larger positions.

Nifty 100 is the parent universe for the other two
Nifty 100 selects the top 100 companies by full market capitalisation from the Nifty 500. Its portfolio is the combined Nifty 50 and Nifty Next 50 portfolio. That means an investor holding a Nifty 100 fund already has exposure to both segments; adding separate Nifty 50 or Nifty Next 50 funds changes the relative weights rather than adding a completely new universe of companies.

Nifty Next 50 is not “Nifty 50 plus 50 more”
Nifty Next 50 contains the 50 Nifty 100 companies that are not in Nifty 50. It therefore has no constituent overlap with Nifty 50 at a given index review, although companies can move between the two indexes as membership changes. The name describes rank within the Nifty 100 structure, not a promise that every constituent will soon enter Nifty 50.
Free-float weighting creates concentration
Free-float market capitalisation reflects the shares broadly available for public trading, rather than simply counting companies or using their total issued shares. A company with a larger free-float value receives a larger index weight. Consequently, buying an index is not the same as buying equal amounts of 50 or 100 stocks. The biggest holdings can drive a meaningful share of returns and risk, and those weights change as prices and free-float shares change.
Membership and weights are not permanent
Index constituents, their weights and the funds that track them are maintained through index reviews and ongoing market changes. A company can move between Nifty Next 50 and Nifty 50, and a fund may take time to implement a rebalance. Check the latest NSE factsheet and the chosen fund’s portfolio before acting on a current constituent list.

Nifty 50: the established large-cap core
What it represents
Nifty 50 is NSE’s diversified 50-stock index covering important sectors. NSE Indices reports that it represented 53.73% of NSE free-float market capitalisation on March 30, 2026. For the six months ending March 2026, it represented 29.24% of NSE traded value. Those figures explain why the index is commonly used as a liquid large-cap benchmark: it covers more than half of the exchange’s free-float value and a substantial portion of trading activity, while remaining a 50-company portfolio.
The index has a base period of November 3, 1995, and a base value of 1,000. The base date is a reference point for calculating the index, not a forecast or a level at which an investor can buy the portfolio.
Why investors use it as a core holding
- Established-company emphasis: NSE’s description places Nifty 50 among the front-line blue-chip companies.
- Broad sector representation: Its diversified construction can reduce dependence on a single industry compared with a narrow sector index, although it remains exposed to the largest companies and sectors in the market.
- Trading convenience: The cited traded-value share is higher than the Nifty 100’s incremental exposure alone, and NSE describes Nifty 50 as more liquid than Nifty Next 50. That generally supports tighter execution for a well-traded ETF, but the fund’s own bid-ask spread still matters.
- Simple portfolio role: One Nifty 50 index fund or ETF can serve as the large-cap anchor without requiring the investor to select individual stocks.
What Nifty 50 does not provide
Nifty 50 excludes the next 50 Nifty 100 companies. An investor who owns only Nifty 50 therefore does not receive the broader Nifty 100 coverage. It is also not an equal-weight index: a few very large free-float companies can have much larger positions than smaller constituents. That concentration is a feature of the benchmark, not a tracking error.

Nifty Next 50: the next tier outside Nifty 50
Definition and scale
Nifty Next 50 is the 50-stock remainder of Nifty 100 after Nifty 50 constituents are removed. It represented 11.22% of NSE free-float market capitalisation on March 30, 2026. Its base date is November 3, 1996, and its base value is 1,000.
NSE’s FAQ describes these companies as the “second rung of growth stocks” and says Nifty Next 50 can be viewed as “an incubator where young growth stocks are found.” The language describes the segment’s position in the index hierarchy; it does not guarantee faster returns, successful promotion to Nifty 50 or lower risk.
Why it can complement a core index
- Different maturity profile: Companies outside Nifty 50 may be earlier in their development or have less established trading histories than front-line blue chips.
- Broader large-company exposure: It adds the next 50 Nifty 100 constituents without duplicating Nifty 50 at the same review.
- Potentially different return drivers: Business growth, re-rating and movement into or out of the top 50 can affect results differently from the largest companies.
The liquidity and volatility trade-off
NSE states that Nifty Next 50 is less liquid than Nifty 50. Lower liquidity can mean wider bid-ask spreads, more price impact for a large order and greater differences between an ETF’s traded price and its underlying value. The index’s position below Nifty 50 also means investors should expect a less mature-company exposure, not simply a cheaper version of the same portfolio.
For those reasons, Nifty Next 50 is better treated as a deliberate satellite allocation unless an investor has specifically decided that the additional segment is suitable as a core holding. A fund tracking the index can still be diversified across 50 companies, but diversification does not remove market, business or liquidity risk.
Nifty 100: one holding for both large-cap segments
Construction and coverage
Nifty 100 selects the top 100 companies by full market capitalisation from Nifty 500 and tracks the combined Nifty 50 plus Nifty Next 50 portfolio. It represented 64.95% of NSE free-float market capitalisation on March 30, 2026 and 40.93% of NSE traded value for the six months ending March 2026.
Those figures make Nifty 100 the broadest of these three large-cap choices by constituent count and market coverage. It includes the established front-line companies and the next tier in one benchmark, while retaining free-float market-cap weighting.

When its breadth is useful
- One-index simplicity: Investors who want both groups without managing two funds can use a Nifty 100 index fund or ETF.
- Less dependence on the top 50 alone: The additional 50 companies broaden the opportunity set, although Nifty 50 still forms the larger economic portion of the combined portfolio.
- Cleaner portfolio maintenance: A single fund reduces the need to rebalance a separate Nifty 50 and Nifty Next 50 allocation back to a target split.
What to check before choosing it
Nifty 100 is not automatically better than Nifty 50. Its broader exposure includes the less-liquid second tier, and the fund you buy may have a different expense ratio, tracking difference, spread and trading volume from a Nifty 50 product. If you already hold Nifty 50, adding Nifty 100 creates substantial overlap; the purchase mainly increases exposure to the Nifty Next 50 portion while also changing the overall weights.
Comparing the decision factors that matter
Breadth and concentration
Nifty 50 holds 50 companies, Nifty Next 50 holds 50 different companies from the Nifty 100, and Nifty 100 holds all 100. More names do not automatically mean equal diversification because every index is free-float weighted. Nifty 100 still gives the largest Nifty 50 companies the largest positions, but it spreads exposure across a wider set of large companies than Nifty 50 alone.
Established versus emerging large companies
Nifty 50 is the clearest choice when the objective is exposure to front-line blue chips. Nifty Next 50 shifts the emphasis toward the next tier and the growth profile NSE associates with that segment. Nifty 100 blends the two. The appropriate mix depends on how much maturity and liquidity risk an investor is willing to accept, not on the label “large cap” alone.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Liquidity and execution
Index liquidity and fund liquidity are related but not identical. NSE describes Nifty Next 50 as less liquid than Nifty 50, while the cited traded-value shares show that Nifty 50 and Nifty 100 account for different portions of exchange activity. For an ETF, inspect average traded volume, the current bid-ask spread and the premium or discount to net asset value. For an index fund, exchange spreads are less relevant to the purchase itself, but the fund’s tracking difference and dealing cut-off rules remain important.
Overlap and unintended bets
Holding Nifty 50 and Nifty Next 50 together can recreate broad Nifty 100 exposure, but the result depends on how much money goes into each fund. Holding Nifty 50 plus Nifty 100 usually creates a strong tilt toward Nifty 50 because that group appears in both. Map the underlying constituents and approximate weights before adding a second product; count the economic exposure, not just the number of fund names in your account.
Costs and tracking quality
The index does not charge an investor directly. Costs come from the ETF or index fund used to access it. Compare:

- Expense ratio: the fund’s recurring operating charge.
- Tracking difference: how closely the fund’s return follows its benchmark after expenses and implementation effects.
- Bid-ask spread: particularly relevant to ETFs, where a wide spread can exceed a small expense-ratio difference on a one-off purchase.
- Brokerage and exchange charges: applicable to ETF transactions according to the investor’s broker and order type.
- Tax and transaction effects: determined by the product structure, investor circumstances and current Indian rules; verify the applicable treatment rather than assuming all funds are identical.
Exact costs vary by issuer and date. NSE Indices lists ETFs and domestic index funds linked to each benchmark, but the benchmark page does not establish that one provider will always be cheapest or track best.
Which index suits common portfolio objectives?
Choose Nifty 50 for a straightforward core
Nifty 50 fits an investor who wants one established large-cap anchor, values liquidity and does not need the next 50 companies included. It is also the easier benchmark to use when an investor wants to minimise the number of moving parts in a long-term allocation.
Choose Nifty 100 for one broad large-cap allocation
Nifty 100 fits an investor who wants both segments in one product and accepts the additional exposure to companies outside Nifty 50. It can be operationally simpler than maintaining two funds, provided the chosen product has acceptable costs and tracking quality.
Use Nifty Next 50 as a deliberate satellite
Nifty Next 50 fits an investor who already has a core allocation and wants targeted exposure to the next tier of Nifty 100 companies. The position should be sized with its lower liquidity and less mature-company profile in mind. It is not an automatic substitute for Nifty 50 merely because both contain 50 stocks.
When combining indexes makes sense
A combination can be reasonable when an investor wants to set a specific split between established and next-tier companies. For example, separate funds allow the investor to choose the relative allocation rather than accepting the market-cap-weighted blend embedded in Nifty 100. The trade-off is more rebalancing work, more opportunities for overlapping holdings and potentially two sets of fund costs.

- Define the job of the holding. Decide whether it is the portfolio’s large-cap core, a one-fund broad allocation or a satellite tilt.
- Check the current benchmark. Confirm that the product tracks Nifty 50, Nifty Next 50 or Nifty 100, and read the latest factsheet for constituents, weights and methodology.
- Compare tracking evidence. Review the fund’s published tracking difference over multiple periods rather than selecting on expense ratio alone.
- Assess trading mechanics. For an ETF, check exchange liquidity, bid-ask spread and the difference between market price and net asset value. For an index fund, check purchase and redemption cut-offs, minimum amounts and settlement rules.
- Calculate overlap with existing holdings. Look through all equity funds and ETFs, not just the proposed purchase, to see whether Nifty 50 exposure is already embedded.
- Account for all costs. Include the expense ratio, brokerage and exchange charges where applicable, spread, taxes and any fund-specific transaction costs.
- Set a rebalancing rule. Write down when you will restore the intended allocation, such as a calendar review or a tolerance band, instead of reacting to short-term index performance.
- Place orders appropriately. ETF investors can use limit orders when spreads are wide or markets are moving quickly; index-fund investors should follow the fund house’s stated cut-off and valuation process.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Treating “Next 50” as a guaranteed performance upgrade
The second-rung description is about index position and company profile, not a promise of superior returns. Future constituents can disappoint, leave the index or experience sharp drawdowns. Use the index only if its risk and liquidity characteristics fit the portfolio.

Assuming 100 stocks means equal diversification
Free-float weighting means the largest companies dominate the economic exposure. Review the weight distribution in the current factsheet rather than inferring risk from the constituent count.
Buying an ETF without checking its spread
A low annual expense ratio does not compensate for an unnecessarily wide bid-ask spread on every trade. Compare the live market depth and indicative net asset value where available, and consider a limit order.
Ignoring overlap between funds
Nifty 100 already contains Nifty 50. Adding both can unintentionally overweight the largest companies. List the underlying benchmarks and estimate the resulting exposure before investing.

A practical decision rule
Start with the exposure your portfolio is missing. If it needs a liquid, established large-cap anchor, select a Nifty 50 product. If it needs one holding that spans both the front-line and next-tier large companies, select a Nifty 100 product after comparing its tracking quality and costs. If the core is already in place and you intentionally want the next tier, add Nifty Next 50 in a size that reflects its lower liquidity and higher maturity risk. None of these choices is universally best; the index should match the role, implementation vehicle and overlap profile you can maintain over time.
