Short answer: A Nifty 50 index mutual fund and a Nifty 50 ETF can both target the same index, but you buy them differently. An index fund is purchased or redeemed through the mutual-fund process at the applicable NAV. An ETF is bought and sold on an exchange during market hours at a market price that may be above or below its NAV. The cheaper choice depends on the scheme’s current total expense ratio (TER), tracking results, your trade size and frequency, brokerage, bid–ask spread, and demat costs—not on the wrapper’s label alone.

For an Indian resident comparing passive Nifty 50 exposure, an index fund is usually simpler for scheduled investing, while an ETF offers intraday control to an investor who already uses a demat and trading account. Tax treatment is generally based on the equity-oriented fund rules and the facts of each transaction, rather than simply whether the product is called an ETF or an index fund.

Question Nifty 50 index mutual fund Nifty 50 ETF
How you transact Submit a mutual-fund purchase or redemption request. The applicable NAV and cut-off rules determine the transaction. Place an exchange order. The price changes during the trading session and can differ from NAV.
Where units are held In the fund account or through the platform used for the mutual-fund transaction; the exact route varies. Compulsorily in demat mode, alongside a trading account.
Intraday pricing No. The transaction uses the applicable NAV process rather than a live exchange quote. Yes. You can choose an order price, subject to available market liquidity.
Recurring investing SIP availability, dates and minimums are scheme- and platform-specific. You must place exchange purchases yourself or use a broker’s recurring facility if one is offered; terms vary.
Investor-side costs Scheme TER plus any applicable scheme-level brokerage, transaction costs and statutory levies. ETF TER plus brokerage or tariff, bid–ask spread, exchange and statutory charges, and possible demat fees.
Tracking assessment Compare tracking error and tracking difference against the same index variant and period. Make the same comparison, then separately consider the difference between the exchange price and NAV.
Tax framework Equity-oriented fund rules can apply when the scheme classification and transaction conditions qualify. An equity-oriented ETF can fall within the same broad framework, subject to the relevant conditions.

SEBI describes ETFs as funds that track indices such as the Sensex and Nifty, and describes index mutual funds as schemes that seek to replicate an index. The shared target does not make implementation identical: cash held for liquidity, portfolio flows, corporate actions, trading costs and price formation can produce different investor outcomes.

What a Nifty 50 index mutual fund does

An index mutual fund pools investor money and buys securities intended to replicate the Nifty 50. You deal with the mutual-fund scheme rather than another investor on an exchange. A purchase or redemption receives the NAV applicable under the scheme’s cut-off and settlement rules; it is not an instruction to buy at a price you see moving tick by tick.

Why investors use the fund route

  • Simple account plumbing: You can transact through the fund house or a mutual-fund platform without placing an exchange order for every contribution.
  • Scheduled contributions: SIPs may be available, but the exact dates, minimum amounts and mandate process are scheme-specific. Confirm them with the asset-management company.
  • No exchange spread at your order: You do not cross an ETF bid–ask spread when submitting a normal mutual-fund purchase. The scheme still incurs its own portfolio and transaction costs.
  • Plan choice matters: Direct and regular plans have different cost structures. A direct plan’s base TER excludes distribution expenses and commission, so its disclosed base TER is lower than the corresponding regular-plan structure.

What the fund route does not provide

You cannot decide the exact intraday execution price. If the index moves sharply after you submit an order, the applicable NAV may be different from the quote you saw when deciding to invest. The scheme’s disclosed tracking results and costs therefore matter more than a momentary market quote.

What a Nifty 50 ETF does

An ETF holds a portfolio intended to follow the Nifty 50 while issuing units that trade on an exchange. Your broker matches your order with available sellers or buyers. The traded price is set by orders and can be higher or lower than the value of the underlying holdings (NAV).

Requirements before buying

  • A demat account is required because ETF units are held in demat mode.
  • You need an exchange-enabled trading account and a broker that permits the order type and market you intend to use.
  • Brokerage or tariff, exchange charges, statutory levies and possible demat fees must be included in your calculation.

You therefore cannot buy a conventional exchange-traded Nifty 50 ETF without the required demat and trading infrastructure. A mutual-fund index scheme may be available through a fund account or platform instead.

How ETF execution differs from NAV dealing

An ETF can trade at a premium or discount to NAV. A liquid, competitive order book may keep the difference modest, but exchange trading never guarantees execution at NAV. A limit order lets you specify the maximum purchase price or minimum sale price; a market order prioritises execution and accepts the available prices. Check the visible spread and market depth before submitting an order, especially for a small or infrequent trade.

Compare the complete cost, not just TER

The TER is the recurring scheme-level expense ratio, but it is only one part of what an investor pays. AMFI’s TER disclosures separate the base expense ratio, brokerage cost, transaction cost and statutory levies. The brokerage and transaction measures shown there are annualised cumulative daily averages for a reference period and are reset monthly. Treat them as disclosure inputs, not a promise of the exact rupee cost of your own orders.

Cost components by wrapper

Cost item Index mutual fund ETF How to check it
Base TER Varies by scheme and by direct or regular plan. Varies by ETF. Use the current scheme disclosure and compare the same plan basis.
Distribution expenses Included in regular-plan economics; excluded from a direct plan’s base TER. Not represented by the investor’s broker tariff; inspect the ETF’s own TER disclosure. Do not compare a direct fund with a regular fund or an ETF without aligning the basis.
Scheme brokerage and transaction costs May contribute to the scheme’s total cost. May contribute to the ETF’s total cost. Check current AMFI and fund-house disclosures.
Investor brokerage Usually not an exchange-order charge for a normal fund transaction. Broker tariff or commission can apply to each purchase and sale. Read the broker’s current tariff, including minimum charges.
Bid–ask spread No exchange spread on the mutual-fund order itself. Paid indirectly when buying at the ask or selling at the bid. Observe the live quote and recent depth at the time of your order.
Exchange and statutory charges Applicable scheme or transaction levies may apply. Exchange and statutory charges may apply to the trade. Use the broker’s contract-note schedule and current regulations.
Demat charges Not inherent to the mutual-fund route, although an investor’s chosen platform may have its own terms. Possible account or holding charges, depending on the depository participant. Include the actual account tariff rather than assuming it is zero.

Why a lower ETF TER can still cost more

Suppose two products track the same index and the ETF displays a lower TER. A fixed brokerage charge and a wide spread can consume a larger percentage of a small, frequent purchase. For a larger, less frequent transaction, those fixed frictions may represent a smaller percentage, although the result depends on the actual quote and tariff. This is a cost-component inference, not a universal ranking of ETFs against funds.

Use a like-for-like worksheet:

  1. Write down the exact benchmark variant: price index or Total Returns Index (TRI).
  2. Record whether the mutual fund is direct or regular and capture the current TER for the actual scheme or ETF.
  3. Capture the latest disclosed tracking difference and tracking error for the same comparison period.
  4. Estimate the number and rupee size of purchases and sales you expect in a year.
  5. For an ETF, add the broker tariff, expected spread, exchange and statutory charges, and any demat cost.
  6. For a mutual fund, include any platform charge and recognise that scheme-level transaction costs are reflected in the fund’s disclosures rather than quoted as your own exchange order.
  7. Recheck the figures before investing; live plan-level costs and tariffs change.

No single “cheapest” Nifty 50 product can be established without a matched set of current scheme data, investor order sizes and account tariffs.

Trading, liquidity and price control

Mutual-fund NAV dealing

A mutual-fund transaction follows the scheme’s applicable cut-off, NAV and settlement rules. The route is operationally predictable for a recurring investor, but it does not give you an intraday limit price. The scheme itself manages portfolio cash, subscriptions, redemptions and index changes.

ETF exchange dealing

ETF prices move whenever orders trade. The relevant liquidity is not a generic claim that “ETFs are liquid”; it is the particular ETF’s market depth, spread, creation and redemption arrangements, and the quality of the broker’s access. There is no verified fund-by-fund volume or spread ranking here, so inspect the current quote before each order.

Practical ETF order checklist

  1. Confirm that the quote is for the intended Nifty 50 ETF and that the market is open.
  2. Look at both bid and ask prices and the quantity available at each level.
  3. Compare the quote with the ETF’s indicative or published NAV when available; a difference is possible and is not automatically an error.
  4. Prefer a limit order when controlling the maximum purchase or minimum sale price matters.
  5. Review the contract note for brokerage, exchange charges and statutory levies.

An ETF’s exchange listing does not guarantee that you can execute at NAV, and a mutual fund’s NAV process does not mean the underlying portfolio has no trading costs.

Tracking the Nifty 50: error versus difference

Tracking error

NSE defines tracking error as the annualised standard deviation of the difference between a fund’s returns and its target index returns. It measures how variable the gap is. Expenses, cash held for liquidity, investor flows, corporate actions and index changes can all affect the result.

Tracking difference

Tracking difference is the realised annualised return gap over a stated period. A fund can have a modest average gap but occasional volatility, or a stable gap that is consistently negative because of costs. Compare both measures rather than treating either one as a complete score.

Use the same benchmark basis

NSE notes that index-fund tracking calculations use the Total Returns Index, which includes dividends. A comparison between a fund measured against TRI and a product or article quoting a price-index return is not like-for-like. Record the benchmark name, period and methodology before drawing a conclusion.

What the index represents

The Nifty 50 contains 50 stocks across 13 sectors. NSE Indices reported that it represented about 53.73% of the free-float market capitalisation of stocks listed on NSE on March 30, 2026. That dated figure describes its share of the Indian listed-market opportunity set at that point; it is not a measure of global diversification or coverage of every Indian security. Both wrappers inherit the concentration and sector composition of the index they track.

Taxation in India: the current broad framework

The Income Tax Department’s AY 2026–27 materials retain section 112A for qualifying sales of equity-oriented fund units when the relevant securities transaction tax (STT) conditions apply. The 2026 notification schedule states a 20% short-term capital-gains rate and a 12.5% long-term capital-gains rate for applicable equity-oriented fund-unit transactions. Return guidance also references the ₹1.25 lakh section 112A long-term-gain amount.

Those figures are not a universal “ETF tax” or “index-fund tax” rule. Their application depends on the scheme’s tax classification, acquisition and transfer facts, holding-period classification, STT conditions, residency, loss adjustment, surcharge and cess, and any later statutory change. The ₹1.25 lakh figure should not be read as an unconditional tax-free allowance for every investor or transaction.

Questions to verify before filing

  • Is the exact scheme or ETF classified as an equity-oriented fund for the relevant period?
  • What are the acquisition and sale dates and the resulting holding-period category?
  • Were the required STT and transaction conditions met?
  • Do capital losses, other income, residency, surcharge or cess alter the calculation?
  • Has a later Finance Act, notification or tax circular changed the rule by the time you file?

Keep contract notes, account statements, purchase lots and redemption records. Confirm the current law and your personal computation with a qualified tax professional; the broad framework above is not individualized tax advice.

How to choose between the wrappers

An index fund is usually the better operational fit when

  • You want an automated monthly contribution and do not need an intraday execution price.
  • You prefer to invest without opening or maintaining a demat and trading account.
  • Your contribution is small enough that ETF brokerage and spread could be material.
  • You value a single NAV-based purchase process and are willing to accept the applicable NAV timing.

An ETF is usually the better operational fit when

  • You already maintain a low-cost demat and trading account.
  • You need intraday control, limit orders or the ability to trade during exchange hours.
  • Your order size and expected frequency make brokerage and spread reasonable relative to the investment.
  • You are prepared to check market depth, quoted spread and the difference between price and NAV.

Do not choose on one headline number

A lower TER, a familiar fund name or an exchange listing is not enough. Compare the same Nifty 50 benchmark variant, current plan-level disclosures, tracking difference, tracking error, expected transaction sizes, account charges and tax facts. If two products remain close after that exercise, choose the route you can follow consistently and document correctly.

Common mistakes and fixes

“The ETF must be cheaper because its TER is lower.”

Fix: Add brokerage, spread, exchange and statutory charges, and demat costs. Compare total expected rupees for your own order pattern.

“An ETF always trades at NAV.”

Fix: Check the live bid and ask and use a limit order when price control matters. Market price can be above or below NAV.

“All Nifty 50 products have the same tracking quality.”

Fix: Review current scheme disclosures for tracking error and tracking difference over the same period and against the same TRI or price-index benchmark.

“SIP terms are identical across index funds.”

Fix: Confirm the individual scheme’s minimum, date, mandate, pause and cancellation rules with the AMC or platform.

“The 20% and 12.5% rates apply automatically to every sale.”

Fix: Check equity-oriented classification, holding period, STT, residency, losses and current law before filing.

“Exchange liquidity is guaranteed because an ETF is listed.”

Fix: Inspect the actual order book and spread for the ETF and time of day. Listing alone does not establish a favourable execution.

A repeatable decision checklist

  1. Define the goal, contribution schedule and expected holding period.
  2. Decide whether you need intraday price control or can use the applicable NAV process.
  3. Confirm whether you already have the demat, trading and broker arrangements required for an ETF.
  4. Select the same Nifty 50 index variant for every candidate.
  5. Compare current direct or regular-plan TER, ETF TER, disclosed transaction costs and statutory levies.
  6. Compare tracking difference and tracking error for matching periods.
  7. Estimate your own brokerage, spread, exchange, statutory and demat costs.
  8. Check the scheme’s tax classification and keep the documents needed for the applicable capital-gains calculation.
  9. Revisit the comparison when tariffs, TERs, tracking disclosures or tax rules change.
