Short answer: Nifty 50 futures are NSE index-futures contracts (symbol family FUTIDX) available in a rolling three-month cycle. The monthly contract expires on the last Tuesday of its expiry month, or the previous trading day when that Tuesday is a holiday. NSE Clearing calculates initial margin upfront with SPAN using a 99% one-day VaR basis (a two-day horizon applies in the specified next-day mark-to-market collection circumstance). Margin, lot size and risk parameters change, so the exchange contract file and your broker’s live margin screen must be checked before placing an order. Current daily and final settlement formulas and cash-credit timing should likewise be confirmed in the latest NSE Clearing rules.

What a Nifty 50 futures contract represents

A Nifty 50 futures contract is a standardized derivative on the NIFTY 50 index, not a purchase of the index’s constituent shares. The NSE classifies it as an index future under FUTIDX. You take a long position when you expect the index level to rise and a short position when you expect it to fall; gains and losses are handled through the exchange clearing process rather than by transferring a basket of shares.

Contracts trade continuously from their introduction date until expiry. The quoted futures price is an index level, while your economic exposure is that level multiplied by the contract’s permitted lot size. Because only margin is posted rather than the full notional value, a relatively small index move can produce a comparatively large percentage change in the funds committed to the position. That leverage is an exposure feature, not a return guarantee.

“Nifty futures” is often used informally for several Nifty-family derivatives. When the contract matters for an order or a margin calculation, identify the exact product as Nifty 50 futures, the contract month and the exchange symbol shown by your broker.

Which contract months are listed?

NSE describes a maximum three-month cycle for Nifty 50 futures. At any time, the listed maturities are the near month, next month and far month. When the near-month contract expires, a new three-month contract is introduced on the following trading day.

Listed maturity Meaning What changes as expiry approaches
Near month The earliest listed expiry Usually the contract with the shortest time remaining; verify its current liquidity and margin.
Next month The expiry immediately after the near month Has more time value and may have a different spread, liquidity and margin profile.
Far month The third listed expiry Longest remaining term in the standard cycle; risk parameters and trading activity can differ from nearer contracts.

The exchange permits or changes the lot size and other contract terms. The NIFTY 50 F&O page states that contract value at introduction may not be less than ₹15 lakh. That is a minimum value requirement at introduction, not a current lot-size number. The cited page did not expose the current lot size in the material available here, so do not infer a quantity from an old article, a screenshot or another Nifty product. Use the latest dated NSE contract file for the active month.

When does a Nifty futures contract expire?

NSE’s stated monthly rule is: “Nifty 50 futures contracts expire on the last Tuesday of the expiry month. If the last Tuesday is a trading holiday, the contracts expire on the previous trading day.” The rule applies to the monthly Nifty 50 futures contract; the exact date for a particular symbol still needs confirmation against the current contract listing and holiday calendar.

How to verify a specific expiry

  1. Read the expiry month and date displayed for the symbol in your broker’s order ticket.
  2. Match that date to the active NSE contract file, rather than relying on a calendar generated from a previous year.
  3. Check the NSE trading-holiday calendar. If the last Tuesday is a holiday, move the expiry to the previous trading day.
  4. Confirm that the broker’s contract description, exchange contract file and risk screen all refer to the same Nifty 50 product, not another Nifty-family index.

What happens on an expiry-day holiday?

Suppose the last Tuesday is a market holiday. The contract does not wait until Wednesday; its expiry moves to the preceding trading day. This can shorten the time available to close or roll a position, so verify the date before planning a rollover or leaving an order open.

Expiry-day spread treatment

NSE lists index-derivatives extreme-loss margin at 2% of notional value. It also states that index-futures positions in contracts expiring that day receive no calendar-spread extreme-loss-margin benefit from the start of expiry day. A calendar spread can reduce some risk charges when months are imperfectly correlated, but it does not remove market risk. The loss of that benefit on expiry day can increase the funds required even when both legs of a spread remain open.

How margin is determined

Margin is not one permanent rupee amount for every Nifty futures contract. NSE Clearing collects initial margin upfront for all open positions of a clearing member, using margins computed by NSE Clearing-SPAN. The exchange describes the initial-margin basis as a 99% value-at-risk (VaR) estimate over one day. For futures in the specified circumstance where next-day mark-to-market collection cannot be completed before trading begins, the described horizon is two days.

That methodology means the requirement can change when the index, volatility, time to expiry, contract-month correlations or exchange risk parameters change. A broker’s displayed “available margin” or “required margin” is an operational estimate for your account at that moment; it is not a substitute for the exchange’s published contract and risk files.

Margin or risk item What the official material establishes What you must verify live
Initial margin Collected upfront and computed with NSE Clearing-SPAN on a 99% VaR basis; the stated horizon is one day, or two days in the specified collection circumstance. Current SPAN parameters, position size, contract month and the broker’s account-level requirement.
Index-derivatives extreme-loss margin NSE lists 2% of notional value. Whether the current risk-parameter file has changed and how the broker displays the charge.
Calendar-spread treatment Spread charges address imperfect correlation between contract months; expiry-day index-futures positions lose the extreme-loss-margin spread benefit from the start of expiry day. Leg eligibility, offsets, expiry-day cutover and any additional broker restrictions.
Lot-size exposure Contract value at introduction may not be below ₹15 lakh; the exchange may stipulate or change the permitted lot size. Latest lot quantity, quantity-freeze limit and the notional value for the exact contract.

A practical notional-value check

To estimate exposure, multiply the current futures price (quoted as an index level) by the lot quantity in the active NSE contract file. For example, the calculation is:

Notional value = futures index price × exchange-prescribed lot size

Do not insert an assumed lot size into that equation. The ₹15 lakh figure is a threshold for contract value at introduction, not evidence that every current contract has a particular quantity. Once you have the notional value, the applicable exchange and broker risk parameters determine the actual margin; the 2% extreme-loss figure alone is not a complete margin quote.

Why your margin screen can change during the day

  • SPAN risk arrays and other exchange parameters can be revised.
  • The futures price and therefore your notional exposure move continuously.
  • Opening another position can alter the portfolio’s net and spread risk.
  • Near expiry, the contract’s remaining time and spread eligibility change.
  • On expiry day, the stated loss of the calendar-spread extreme-loss benefit can raise the requirement.

Keep a buffer above the displayed minimum. A requirement that is sufficient when an order is entered may not remain sufficient after a price move, a risk-parameter update or the removal of a spread offset.

What “settlement” means—and what must be checked

Settlement has two separate operational questions: how an open futures position is valued during its life and how the expiring contract is assigned its final settlement value. The official material available for this article confirms that margin and expiry rules, but it does not establish the current daily mark-to-market formula, final settlement-price formula or the exact cash credit/debit schedule. Those details can change and must be taken from the current NSE Clearing settlement-price and settlement-mechanism rules.

Daily mark-to-market

A broker ledger may show daily mark-to-market debits or credits while a futures position is open. Do not assume the amount, valuation time or payment deadline from a generic derivatives guide. Confirm the current exchange rule and then check how your broker posts the resulting debit or credit, including any internal cut-off time for adding funds.

Final settlement at expiry

At expiry, the contract is closed using the exchange’s prescribed final settlement mechanism. The exact reference value, calculation window and posting schedule are not stated in the cited material. Before holding a position into expiry, obtain the current Clearing rule for that contract and ask your broker how the final amount appears in the ledger.

Settlement verification checklist

  • Find the current NSE Clearing rule that defines the daily settlement price.
  • Find the rule that defines the final settlement price for Nifty 50 futures.
  • Check the applicable trading and settlement dates when expiry falls before a holiday.
  • Confirm whether your broker requires funds before a stated debit deadline.
  • Save the contract symbol, expiry date and the rule version you relied on for the trade.

Decision factor Questions to ask
Time to expiry How many trading days remain, and can you monitor the position through the expiry date?
Liquidity Which month has tighter spreads and sufficient displayed depth for your order size?
Margin What does the live broker screen show for each month and for the complete portfolio?
Spread treatment Will the proposed calendar spread qualify for an offset, and when does that benefit disappear on expiry day?
Rollover timing What is your plan for closing the expiring leg and opening the next month, including holiday-adjusted expiry?

A calendar spread reduces some modeled correlation risk but does not eliminate the possibility that the two months move differently. The expiry-day rule is especially important: the stated extreme-loss-margin spread benefit is unavailable from the start of that day for positions in the expiring index-futures contract.

Operational workflow before placing an order

  1. Identify the instrument. Select Nifty 50 futures, not a similarly named Nifty-family index or an option.
  2. Read the exact contract month. Record the near, next or far month and its exchange-listed expiry date.
  3. Check the holiday adjustment. Confirm whether the last Tuesday is a trading holiday and, if so, use the previous trading day.
  4. Verify the lot quantity. Use the latest dated NSE contract file; never copy an old lot-size number.
  5. Calculate exposure. Multiply the displayed futures level by the verified lot size to understand notional value.
  6. Review live margin. Compare the broker’s requirement with the current exchange risk parameters and leave a liquidity buffer.
  7. Assess spread eligibility. If using two months, check the applicable offset and remember that the expiry-day extreme-loss benefit is removed for the expiring contract.
  8. Plan settlement funding. Know how your broker posts mark-to-market and final settlement amounts, and when funds must be available.
  9. Set an exit or rollover rule. Do not let an operational deadline—especially a holiday-adjusted expiry—decide your action accidentally.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Using an old lot size

Lot quantities can be stipulated or changed by the exchange. An old quantity makes both notional and margin estimates unreliable. Recheck the current contract file whenever you open a new month.

Treating a broker estimate as an exchange guarantee

The broker screen reflects the account, positions and parameters available at that moment. It can change after a risk update or price move. Use it for order funding, but verify the underlying exchange rules.

Assuming a spread is margin-free

Calendar-spread charges recognize imperfect correlation; they do not erase market risk. On expiry day, the specified extreme-loss-margin benefit is not available for the expiring index-futures position.

Relying on a normal-calendar expiry

The last Tuesday rule is adjusted backward when that Tuesday is a trading holiday. Check the exchange holiday calendar and contract listing together.

Quoting an unverified settlement formula

Daily and final settlement formulas, reference windows and cash-posting schedules must come from current NSE Clearing rules. If you cannot verify the applicable version, do not promise a precise debit, credit or settlement date.
