You can start NieR:Automata without playing the original NieR. Go in ready to experiment with weapons and plug-in chips, explore at your own pace, and keep playing after the first credits if you want to continue the story.
Do you need to play the original NieR first?
No. PlayStation’s spoiler-free beginner guide says prior knowledge of the original game is not required to enjoy NieR:Automata. You may notice references if you know the earlier game, but they are not a prerequisite for starting.
How should you approach combat and chips?
Experiment before searching for a supposedly perfect setup. You can change weapon sets and configure plug-in chips, so try combinations that suit the way you like to fight rather than treating one build as mandatory.
Balance chip strength with storage cost
Chips have both an effect and a storage cost. The PlayStation guide recommends balancing those factors when configuring your setup. A stronger chip may not be the right choice if fitting it means giving up other effects you value.

Change your approach as you learn
Try different weapon sets and chip configurations as you play. The available guidance does not establish a single best loadout, so use your own comfort and preferences to decide what to keep equipped.
Should you explore or stick to the main path?
Exploration is part of the experience, not just a detour. The PlayStation guide highlights hidden weapons, areas, characters, and Easter eggs. Follow anything that catches your attention, but there is no need to track down every optional discovery before moving forward.

Fishing is optional

What do the first credits mean?
They do not necessarily mean you have seen all of the story. PlayStation’s beginner guide encourages players to continue after the first credits. If you want more of the game, keep going; this spoiler-light guide leaves route and ending details undisclosed.

Which version should you choose?
Official listings identify versions for PlayStation 4, Steam, and Nintendo Switch. The Game of the YoRHa Edition is listed for PlayStation and Steam.
