Some NFL fans are urging teams to hire professional Madden players to advise on late-game decisions and clock management. The proposal drew attention after a disputed Eagles kickoff decision, but it remains a fan idea: no cited report confirms that an NFL team has hired a Madden player as a consultant or shows that doing so would improve results.
What are fans proposing?
The suggestion is narrower than hiring gamers to coach a team. Fans want experienced competitive Madden players to serve as situational football consultants, offering input on decisions such as kickoff choices and late-game clock management. The idea is that repeated practice in simulated situations might help a team examine more scenarios.
In an October 11, 2026 report, The Spun quoted a pro Madden player using the handle Joke (@Jokeeee_) who said they had played professionally for more than 15 years and argued that this experience could be useful in a situational-consulting role. That playing-history claim is the poster’s own, not an independently verified coaching credential.

Have NFL teams hired Madden players?
The reporting cited here establishes no NFL team hiring a competitive Madden player as a situational consultant. Nor does it provide evidence that such a hire would improve clock management, decision quality, or wins. The proposal should therefore be understood as a suggestion from fans and football voices, not a confirmed hiring trend.
There is a related but distinct connection between football expertise and the game itself. NFL.com’s coverage of Madden NFL 27 describes EA working with former NFL personnel, active players, and Benkert on game development and promotion. The article says Benkert’s videos explain topics such as pre-snap coverage diagnoses and decision processes. That is football expertise helping shape or explain a video game; it is not an NFL team using competitive gamers to advise its coaches.

EA’s Madden NFL 26 features page likewise describes NFL presentation developed in collaboration with all 32 teams. Collaboration on a game’s presentation does not establish that teams employ gamers as coaches or consultants.

What evidence suggests Madden players know football?
An online survey conducted in July 2009 by the University of Oregon Warsaw Sports Marketing Center in conjunction with EA found that Madden players performed better than nonplayers on several football-knowledge questions. EA reported that the survey included more than 9,000 responses and had a margin of error of ±3 percent. The findings are historical survey results about fans, not a test of coaches or real-game decisions.

EA also reported that Madden players consumed an average of 35 percent more football content than nonplayers. Taken together, these figures support a limited point: in that 2009 survey, Madden players were more avid football consumers and scored higher on the tested football facts. They do not show that professional gamers make better coaching decisions, that the results apply to today’s players, or that a team would benefit from hiring one. Could game experience translate to real NFL decisions?
It is plausible that repeatedly encountering simulated situations could help someone recognize patterns or think through options. But a real sideline decision involves factors a game session may not reproduce in the same way: the players available, fatigue, communication, opponent tendencies, timeouts, rules, and the consequences of getting a call wrong.

The sources cited here do not compare a gamer’s advice with a coach’s judgment or test whether game-based repetition improves NFL outcomes. They also do not establish what a proposed consultant would actually do: advise during games, run scenario simulations, or build analysis tools. Any team considering the role would need to define the work and validate recommendations against real football situations. That is a practical question, not a proven solution.
What Madden’s development work does—and does not—show
NFL.com’s Madden NFL 27 reporting describes EA’s effort to make the game more realistic, including feedback from football personnel. EA gameplay creative director Scott O’Gallagher told NFL.com: “I 100 percent stand on simulation. Fixing football problems with football solutions. That’s always the first thing.” He was discussing the game’s design approach, not advocating for NFL teams to hire competitive gamers.

A simulation can be informed by football knowledge without proving that its players are qualified to coach in the NFL. The two questions—how well a game represents football and whether a gamer can improve a team’s decisions—require different evidence.
What is Madden NFL 27?
Madden NFL 27 is the current game referenced in NFL.com’s reporting. The outlet lists a release date of August 13, 2026, and platforms of PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. Its release or development details provide context for the discussion, but playing the game is not evidence of NFL coaching ability.
