Nextcloud Talk does not have one universal CPU, RAM, or user limit. Capacity depends mainly on the number of people transmitting at the same time, how many calls run concurrently, video resolution and screen sharing, and whether media flows through the High Performance Backend (HPB). For a small installation, a properly configured Nextcloud server can handle occasional calls. For meetings with several active participants, webinars, or hundreds of users, deploy HPB and plan TURN relay capacity, firewall access, and bandwidth separately.
Nextcloud’s published HPB baseline is 8 GB of RAM, 32 GB of free disk space, and four AES-capable Intel i7/Xeon cores. Nextcloud estimates that minimum profile for about 150 concurrent users; it is a starting point for that documented workload, not a guarantee for every codec, resolution, recording job, or meeting pattern.
What determines Nextcloud Talk capacity?
Talk load is driven by active media and signaling, not by the number of accounts stored in Nextcloud. A user who is logged in but not participating in a call consumes far fewer resources than someone sending camera video, sharing a screen, or joining several rooms. Audio-only participation and chat activity still add work.
- Concurrent active participants: Count people actually connected to calls at the same time, including audio-only users.
- Simultaneous calls: Ten people in one room create a different pattern from ten separate two-person calls.
- Media topology: A direct or small integrated call places more processing and upload work on the main server and clients. HPB uses a selective forwarding unit (SFU) to receive streams and forward selected streams to participants.
- Media features: Higher video resolution, screen sharing, recording, and transcription increase CPU, memory, storage, or network demand.
- Network conditions: Upload and download capacity, TURN relaying, symmetric NAT, and restrictive firewalls can become the limiting factor before CPU or RAM.
Because these variables change from one deployment to another, a participant number without a call profile is not a meaningful capacity promise. Size for the busiest expected period and leave headroom for authentication, files, database queries, notifications, and other Nextcloud applications.

Baseline requirements for the main Nextcloud server
The main Nextcloud instance handles the web application, authentication, room data, storage, database access, and signaling when the integrated signaling server is used. It must be a real server or a decent virtual server with predictable resources. Shared hosting can fail under long-lived chat and signaling connections, and some providers prohibit the server software Talk requires.
HTTPS and a supported web stack
Serve Talk through HTTPS. Browser WebRTC requires a secure origin for camera, microphone, and screen-sharing access. Configure Apache or Nginx with a supported PHP-FPM and process-management combination so long polling used by chat and signaling can remain open. Reverse proxies must pass WebSocket and long-polling traffic correctly; otherwise users may authenticate successfully but fail to join rooms or receive updates.
Database
Use a supported MySQL or MariaDB installation with utf8mb4 support for a serious Talk deployment. SQLite is not recommended for Talk calls because concurrent signaling and chat activity can create locking and performance problems. Keep the database on fast, reliable storage and include it in backups; the database is part of the call-control path even when media is offloaded to HPB.
Browser and client support
For the full browser video-call and screen-sharing experience, use a current Firefox or Chrome/Chromium release. Out-of-date browsers can lack required WebRTC APIs or have codec and permission problems. Test the exact browsers and managed-device policies used by your organization, especially when camera, microphone, or screen capture is restricted.

Published HPB resources and what they mean
Nextcloud publishes the following minimum profile for its High Performance Backend:
| Resource | Published value | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| RAM | 8 GB | Minimum HPB memory starting point in Nextcloud’s requirements guidance. |
| Free disk space | 32 GB | Space required by the documented HPB baseline; allow additional capacity for your operating system, logs, updates, and operational practices. |
| CPU | Four AES-capable i7/Xeon cores | Use a processor with AES instruction support and four suitable cores for the published baseline. |
| Estimated concurrency | About 150 concurrent users | Nextcloud’s estimate for that minimum HPB profile, not a universal limit for all call types. |
The estimate applies to the profile as documented. It should not be generalized to a particular camera resolution, codec, recording or transcription workload, or network topology that Nextcloud did not specify. If your calls include screen sharing, many simultaneous rooms, or heavy relay traffic, treat the baseline as a floor and validate with a representative load test.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Why AES-capable CPU matters
The published requirement calls for AES-capable i7/Xeon cores. AES instruction support helps cryptographic operations used in secure communications run efficiently. A virtual machine can satisfy the nominal core count yet perform poorly if the host oversubscribes CPU, hides AES features, or imposes strict limits. Verify the CPU features exposed to the guest and monitor sustained utilization during peak calls.
When should you deploy the High Performance Backend?
HPB is optional for very small calls, but Nextcloud’s quick-install guidance says it is already helpful in calls with three participants. It becomes increasingly valuable for larger meetings, webinars, and calls that may reach hundreds or thousands of participants.

What HPB changes
HPB’s SFU receives media streams and forwards them to participants instead of making every endpoint upload a separate copy to every other endpoint. This lowers the media-processing and upload burden on the main Nextcloud server and on clients. Nextcloud describes HPB as solving a bandwidth bottleneck and allowing a single call to scale to much larger numbers of participants.
Cases where HPB is usually worthwhile
- Meetings with three or more active participants, particularly when cameras are enabled.
- Large all-hands meetings, webinars, or classrooms with many viewers.
- Organizations that need to keep video traffic away from the storage and application server.
- Deployments with several simultaneous rooms or predictable growth in concurrent calls.
Cases where integrated signaling may be sufficient
A small household or team making occasional one-to-one calls may start with the integrated signaling server on the main Nextcloud host. Even then, HTTPS, a supported database, a correctly configured web server, and TURN remain important. Move to HPB when call size, concurrency, bandwidth, or operational isolation makes the single-server design a constraint.

TURN: why a relay is needed in real networks
WebRTC attempts direct paths, but many users sit behind symmetric NAT, corporate firewalls, carrier-grade NAT, or mobile networks that block peer-to-peer traffic. In those conditions, a TURN server relays media. Nextcloud’s guidance indicates that TURN is required in almost all real-world network scenarios, so plan it rather than treating it as an edge case.
Ports and firewall planning
- Make TURN reachable on port 443 where possible; port 80 can be used in some configurations.
- HPB normally uses the WebRTC media range 20,000–40,000.
- If a client can reach only 443, TURN relays that traffic to the HPB media range.
- Allow the required UDP and, where your deployment needs it, TCP/TLS paths in your firewall and cloud security groups.
HPB does not eliminate TURN. Clients behind restrictive firewalls may still need the relay even when HPB handles forwarding for the room.

Co-locating HPB and TURN
HPB and TURN can run as separate services or on separate hosts. If they share a machine, both may need port 443, so plan separate IP addresses or distinct bindings before installation. A port conflict can leave one service apparently healthy while clients fail to connect. Document public addresses, certificates, listening ports, and firewall rules as one deployment rather than configuring each component in isolation.
How to choose a deployment shape
Compare architectures against your actual call profile instead of choosing by account count alone.
| Design | Best fit | Advantages | Trade-offs to plan |
|---|---|---|---|
| Single Nextcloud server with integrated signaling | Small installations and occasional one-to-one or very small calls | Few moving parts and simple administration | Application, database, signaling, and media-related work share one host; bandwidth and CPU headroom can disappear as calls grow. |
| Nextcloud plus a separate HPB | Regular multi-person meetings, several simultaneous calls, or larger events | Moves call processing and media forwarding away from the application and storage server; easier to isolate network load | Requires another service, firewall rules, certificates, monitoring, and capacity planning. |
| Nextcloud plus hosted HPB | Organizations that prefer managed media infrastructure | Reduces the operational work of running HPB hardware and updates | Service availability, data paths, support boundaries, and contract terms must be checked for your region and compliance needs. |
For every option, record expected concurrent participants, simultaneous calls, camera resolution, screen sharing, recording or transcription, upstream and downstream bandwidth, TURN requirements, firewall and NAT conditions, database and web-server support, and whether application, storage, HPB, and TURN are isolated.
A practical sizing procedure
- Define the busy-hour profile. Write down the maximum number of people likely to be active at once, the number of concurrent rooms, and how many participants normally publish camera, microphone, or screen content.
- Separate viewers from publishers. A webinar with many receive-only viewers has a different media pattern from a meeting where everyone sends video. Include audio-only users and chat activity in the count.
- Choose the topology. Use integrated signaling for genuinely small calls; plan HPB when calls reach three participants regularly, when multiple rooms overlap, or when you need larger meetings.
- Start from the HPB baseline when applicable. Reserve at least 8 GB RAM, 32 GB free disk, and four AES-capable i7/Xeon cores for the published minimum profile. Add headroom for your operating system, monitoring, updates, and workload.
- Map network paths. Decide whether clients can reach HPB media ports 20,000–40,000 directly. If not, configure TURN on 443 (or 80 where appropriate) and open the corresponding firewall paths.
- Check service bindings. If HPB and TURN share a host, assign separate IP addresses or non-conflicting listeners, especially around port 443.
- Validate under representative load. Test the browsers, camera resolutions, screen sharing, recording or transcription jobs, and firewall conditions your users actually have. Watch CPU, memory, network throughput, packet loss, call setup time, and media quality.
- Set an expansion trigger. Move media to a larger or separate HPB host when the main server approaches sustained resource limits, when calls become unreliable during file activity, or when network egress is competing with storage and application traffic.
Bandwidth and resource planning without false precision
No authoritative figure establishes one universal bandwidth-per-user number for Talk. Codec, resolution, frame rate, screen content, packet overhead, relay use, and whether a participant publishes or only receives all change the result. Do not multiply an invented “per-user” number by your account count.

- 【Reduce Safety Risks】Cable tray under desk keeps all plugs away from your kids, no more worry about tripping. Using 2 holes wire tray saves extra space, helps you easily cabling and wire protection. The mesh design is not easy to accumulate dust, but avoids safety accidents caused by messy wires.
Instead, measure the busiest call pattern and reserve capacity for both directions. A TURN relay can make the server carry traffic that would otherwise travel directly between clients, so relay-heavy networks need more egress and ingress headroom. HPB reduces the upload burden on each endpoint, but it does not make bandwidth free: HPB must receive and forward the selected streams.
- Monitor sustained and peak network throughput on the main server, HPB, and TURN host.
- Track packet loss, jitter, and connection failures, not only CPU and RAM.
- Keep operating-system, database, and Talk traffic from exhausting the same disk or network queue.
- Use separate hosts or network policies when media traffic would interfere with storage or application responsiveness.
Common failure symptoms and fixes
Users can open Nextcloud but cannot start a call
Check HTTPS first, then verify browser camera and microphone permissions. Confirm that the web server and PHP process model support the long polling and signaling paths Talk uses. Inspect reverse-proxy rules for blocked WebSocket or long-polling requests.
Calls work in the office but fail on mobile or from another company
This pattern usually points to NAT or firewall traversal. Confirm that TURN is configured and reachable on 443 (or 80 where used), that DNS and certificates match the public endpoint, and that firewall rules allow the relay traffic. Test from a genuinely restricted network rather than only from the local LAN.
HPB is installed but clients still cannot connect
Verify the HPB media range of 20,000–40,000 is reachable where direct media is expected, and verify TURN fallback for clients that can reach only 443. Check for a port-443 collision if HPB and TURN share a host; use separate IP bindings or hosts.
Chat or signaling becomes slow during calls
Confirm that the database is MySQL or MariaDB with utf8mb4, not SQLite, and examine database locks, PHP worker saturation, and disk latency. Shared hosting limits can be the root cause even when the nominal server plan looks large enough.
Video quality degrades as attendance rises
Look at HPB and TURN network saturation, CPU pressure, packet loss, and the number of simultaneous publishers. The documented “about 150” estimate applies only to the published HPB baseline profile; a different resolution, codec, or workload can require more resources.
Operational checklist before inviting users
- HTTPS is active with a certificate trusted by every client.
- Apache or Nginx, PHP-FPM, and the selected process-management mode are supported and tested for long polling.
- MySQL or MariaDB with
utf8mb4is configured; SQLite is not used for a serious Talk deployment. - Current Firefox or Chrome/Chromium clients can access camera, microphone, and screen sharing.
- TURN is reachable on the planned public port, normally 443, from restrictive networks.
- HPB media ports 20,000–40,000 and fallback relay paths are covered by firewall rules.
- HPB and TURN have non-conflicting port bindings when co-located.
- CPU, RAM, disk, network throughput, packet loss, and call failures are monitored.
- Backups cover the Nextcloud database and configuration, and update procedures are documented.
- A representative multi-user test has been completed before a large event.
Bottom line for common deployment sizes
For occasional one-to-one calls, begin with a well-maintained Nextcloud server and integrated signaling, but still provide HTTPS, a supported database and web stack, and TURN for users on restrictive networks. Once three-person calls become routine, or once several rooms, screen sharing, or larger meetings are expected, HPB is a sensible baseline. For a documented HPB starting point, use 8 GB RAM, 32 GB free disk, and four AES-capable i7/Xeon cores, remembering that Nextcloud’s estimate of about 150 concurrent users belongs to that specific profile. Larger or relay-heavy deployments need workload testing and additional bandwidth rather than reliance on a single headline number.
