A next-generation firewall (NGFW) adds application awareness and deeper traffic inspection to traditional firewall controls. That can give security teams more context for enforcing network rules, detecting threats, and separating network segments—but the benefits depend on policy, configuration, performance, and integration with other security controls.

What is a next-generation firewall?

NIST describes application data awareness as the distinguishing feature of an NGFW: it can inspect application-layer data (Layer 7) in addition to lower-layer network information. In its November 2022 Guide to a Secure Enterprise Network Landscape (SP 800-215), NIST lists deep packet inspection (DPI), intrusion prevention (IPS), and—in configurations that use it—decryption and inspection of TLS traffic among NGFW capabilities.

That application context can let a policy distinguish traffic by application or service rather than relying only on an address and port. Some architectures can also use user or device identity as policy context, when the firewall has suitable identity and device information.

How is an NGFW different from a traditional firewall?

A traditional firewall commonly filters by network addresses, ports, protocols, and connection state. An NGFW can add application identification and inspection, then apply threat controls to what it sees. The distinction is additional context and enforcement capability, not a guarantee that every product has every feature enabled.

Control Traditional firewall NGFW
Common rule context Addresses, ports, protocols, and connection state Those lower-layer details plus application data awareness; identity or device context may be available in some architectures
Traffic inspection Packet filtering and stateful inspection May add deep packet inspection and application identification
Threat controls Not inherent in the basic firewall definition May integrate IPS and other controls; availability varies by product and configuration
Encrypted traffic Can enforce connection rules without seeing encrypted payload contents May decrypt and inspect selected TLS traffic, subject to technical, privacy, and performance trade-offs

What does a next-generation firewall do?

Identify and control applications

Application-aware rules can distinguish the application using a connection instead of assuming that a port reliably identifies its purpose. This can support more specific allow, restrict, or block policies. Check Point’s vendor-authored buyer guidance recommends evaluating application coverage, identification depth, resistance to evasion, and how often application information is updated. Those are useful evaluation questions, not independent proof of any product’s performance.

Inspect traffic for threats

NGFWs may combine inspection with IPS and other security features. Check Point’s guide also suggests evaluating sandboxing, anti-phishing, antivirus, anti-bot, DNS security, threat intelligence, and integrations. These are capabilities to check in a specific offering; they should not be assumed to come with every NGFW or to work identically across deployments.

Apply rules across network segments

The U.S. National Security Agency recommends using distributed NGFWs to restrict unapproved traffic and enforce access controls between approved network segments. It pairs network enforcement with identity verification, device-posture validation, and least privilege. In practice, a firewall can help implement segmentation, but the quality of the result depends on how segments and policies are designed and on whether identity and device context are reliable.

Use different deployment forms

NIST describes NGFW deployment as data-center appliances, software running in cloud virtual machines, or cloud firewall services (often called FWaaS). NIST’s zero-trust implementation project also documents physical, virtual, containerized, and cloud-delivered firewall examples managed centrally. These forms change where inspection occurs and who operates it; the right fit depends on network architecture and operational requirements.

Why an NGFW does not create zero trust on its own

A firewall is an enforcement point within a wider security architecture. NIST’s implementation examples show firewalls used for segmentation and user- or application-based controls, not as a substitute for the rest of zero-trust design. Zero trust also requires appropriate identity verification, device context, access decisions, and least-privilege policies. Buying or deploying an NGFW alone neither establishes that architecture nor guarantees that compromise will be prevented.

What changes when an NGFW inspects encrypted traffic?

Visibility depends on the TLS version and method

Decrypting selected TLS sessions can expose malicious activity that would otherwise remain inside encrypted traffic, but visibility is not automatic. NIST’s final SP 1800-37, published September 17, 2025, explains that TLS 1.3’s approach to forward secrecy may interfere with passive decryption techniques enterprises use to inspect TLS 1.2 traffic. The publication demonstrates standards-compliant approaches for maintaining TLS 1.3 visibility; the practical method depends on the environment.

Decryption creates security and privacy responsibilities

NIST SP 1800-16 warns that decryption creates a place where plaintext and key material may be exposed, can have compliance implications, and can become a valuable target. Some organizations may reasonably conclude that the risks of inspection outweigh its benefits and instead analyze traffic patterns. Where decryption is used, its scope, exclusions, certificate and private-key handling, access controls, logging, and performance impact need deliberate design.

How to evaluate an NGFW for your environment

Compare candidates against the network and operating model you actually have. Check Point’s buyer guide raises several of these topics, but it is vendor-authored guidance rather than neutral comparative testing.
