If a new Zelda game will not download, update, or start on Nintendo Switch, begin with the low-risk fixes: confirm the internet connection, close the game, refresh the download, restart the console, and install both system and software updates. If that fails, check for corrupt data, then isolate the microSD card by redownloading to system memory. A flashing white X usually points to the same storage or software path. An internet or license message requires checking your account and virtual game card, not just reinstalling files.
Start with this five-minute recovery
Use these steps before deleting anything:
- Confirm that the Switch is connected to the internet in System Settings and that other devices can reach the same network.
- Save and close any game or application that is running. Nintendo notes: “Some games and software will pause downloads when they are being played.”
- Open the user page from HOME and choose User Settings > Update Download Progress.
- If the download still does not move, restart the console and wait for it to reconnect before checking the progress again.
- Do not repeatedly launch the unfinished game while it is downloading; doing so can pause the transfer again.
This sequence addresses a paused queue or a temporary network state without changing installed data. If the title is already installed but crashes or refuses to update, continue with the update and data checks below.
Install both required updates
A game update cannot repair a console system that is itself out of date, and a current system cannot fix damaged files in the game. Apply both updates before attempting a more destructive repair.

- Open System Settings from HOME.
- Scroll to System.
- Select System Update and let the console complete the check and installation.
Keep the console connected to power during a system update and do not interrupt a restart. Once HOME returns, test the Zelda title again.

Update the Zelda software
- Highlight the Zelda icon on the HOME Menu; do not open it.
- Press the + or − button.
- Choose Software Update > Via the Internet.
If the update option reports that the software is current, proceed to the corrupt-data check. If it starts downloading, leave the title closed until the update finishes.
When the download will not start or appears stuck
A download that remains at the same percentage is not necessarily a failed game. First distinguish a paused download from a damaged installation.
Refresh the queue
Close every running title, open the user page, and select User Settings > Update Download Progress. This asks the console to resume the queued transfer rather than starting a second copy. If it remains unchanged, restart the Switch, allow it to reconnect to Wi‑Fi, and check the progress once more.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesCheck for a network-side interruption
- Run the Switch’s internet connection test and verify that it receives an internet connection, not merely a connection to the wireless router.
- Move closer to the access point or remove another device that is consuming the connection while you retry.
- If the console repeatedly loses the connection, fix that connection before deleting the Zelda software; redownloading cannot complete over an unstable link.
The exact Zelda edition, Switch generation, region, and any current service outage are not established here, so an outage or title-specific compatibility issue needs to be checked against Nintendo’s current status and support information for your region.

- Compatible with Top Devices: Perfectly compatible with Nintendo Switch (Not 2), Steam Deck, ROG Ally, Android phones, tablets, and even retro game emulators. Includes a full-size SD adapter for seamless use with laptops, handheld consoles, and compatible card readers.
- Smooth 4K/HD Recording & Playback: Supports stable 4K UHD and 1080P Full HD recording and playback, ideal for gameplay footage, game stream content capture, or immersive in-game video rendering.
- Battle-Tested Durability: Engineered for long sessions and intense environments. Waterproof, shockproof, temperature-resistant, X-ray safe — designed to withstand accidental drops, outdoor use, and frequent device swapping.
- Actual Capacity: Storage may be smaller than the labeled capacity because manufacturers use the decimal system (1 GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes) , operating systems display storage using the binary system (1 GiB = 1,073,741,824 bytes). This is a normal industry practice and does not affect performance.
Repair a game that crashes or says it cannot start
For the message “Unable to start software. Return to the HOME Menu and try again,” Nintendo’s documented order is restart, update, corrupt-data check, deletion, and redownload. Follow that order so you do not erase a working installation unnecessarily.
Check the installed files
- Highlight the Zelda title on HOME and press + or −.
- Open the software-management options and choose Check for Corrupt Data when it is offered.
- Let the scan finish. If the console reports damaged data, select the available redownload option.
A corrupt-data result concerns the installed software files. It does not prove that the microSD card is healthy, which is why the storage-isolation test is important if the problem returns.
Delete and redownload when Nintendo recommends it
If the corrupt-data check does not repair the title, or Nintendo’s menu offers no direct redownload choice, select the affected software, delete it, and download it again from the account that obtained it. The redownload must complete before you try to launch the game. A failed or interrupted redownload should be treated as a storage or connection problem, not as proof that the game itself is incompatible.
What the flashing white X means for troubleshooting
A flashing white X over a Zelda icon is handled by Nintendo’s dedicated procedure as a software-and-storage failure path. Repeat the update and corrupt-data checks first, then choose Redownload. If Redownload is not available, delete the software and download it again.

- The official licensed microSD card for Nintendo Switch Systems
- Add games fast with write speeds up to 90MB/s (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending upon host device interface, usage conditions and other factors. 1MB = 1,000,000 bytes.)
- Start playing fast with read speeds up to 100MB/s (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending upon host device interface, usage conditions and other factors. 1MB = 1,000,000 bytes.)
- Store an entire game collection, plus screenshots and videos, with up to 64GB of additional memory (1GB=1,000,000,000 bytes. Actual user storage less)
When a microSD card is installed, power the Switch completely off before touching the card. Nintendo’s sequence is:
- Remove and firmly reseat the microSD card.
- Try the title again after the console restarts.
- If the X returns, try a different compatible microSD card.
- If necessary, format the card and redownload the game.
- As the clearest isolation test, remove the card and download the Zelda software to system memory instead.
Formatting is destructive to data stored on that card, so copy any captures or other files you need before confirming the format. If the game still fails after the card is removed and the installation is in system memory, Nintendo says the console may need service.
Use system memory to identify a microSD problem
Redownloading to the same location is the quickest software repair, but it leaves the storage medium untested. A system-memory installation answers a different question: can the console run a clean copy without using the card?

|---|---|---|
| Redownload to the same storage | Replaces files that may be corrupt; it does not test the storage medium itself. | Use first when the corrupt-data check identifies a software problem and the card has otherwise been reliable. |
| Redownload to system memory | Removes the microSD card from the launch path. | Use when the white X or launch failure returns, or when you suspect the card. |
| Try another microSD card | Checks whether the original card is causing read or write failures. | Use after reseating the existing card if system-memory space is limited or you need a card-based installation. |
| Format the existing microSD card | Rebuilds the card’s file structure but erases its stored data. | Use only after preserving needed files and only when reseating or replacing the card has not solved the issue. |
| Use a physical game card | Provides a separate way to supply the game software. | It is a different installation route, but Nintendo’s downloaded-software guidance does not establish that it fixes a failed digital download. |
If you buy a replacement microSD card, check Nintendo’s current Switch capacity and compatibility requirements before purchasing. A new card is a diagnostic variable, not a guaranteed cure; the title can still fail because of system software, account licensing, or a console fault.

Resolve an internet, account, or license message
A message such as “Unable to connect to the Internet” can appear during launch even when the Zelda software is installed. Nintendo explains that some software needs online verification. This can include a console configured to use an online-license setting when the corresponding virtual game card is not loaded on that console.
Check the connection first
Run the Switch connection test, then retry launch with a stable connection. If the game starts only when online, that behavior is consistent with a verification requirement rather than corrupt download data.
Check the purchasing account
Confirm that the user profile launching Zelda is linked to the Nintendo Account that owns or is entitled to the software. A complete download under a different account does not transfer the license to another profile.

Check the virtual game card and online-license state
Review the console’s virtual-game-card management and ensure the Zelda title is loaded on the Switch where you are trying to play. If an online-license setting is enabled, the console may need to contact Nintendo when the virtual game card is not present locally. Correcting that state can restore launch without another redownload.
Best Value
- Nintendo Switch 2 uses a new standard of expandable memory card called microSD Express (sold separately). This kind of memory card is needed for faster access speeds and to ensure games will run smoothly.
- Please note: Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards. If the microSD cards you have used for Nintendo Switch do not support microSD Express standards, you cannot use them with Nintendo Switch 2.
Do not assume that an offline launch failure is a damaged installation. Test the account and license state before deleting a title that may be perfectly intact.
A decision path for the most common symptoms
| Symptom | Next action |
|---|---|
| Download does not begin | Connect to the internet, close running software, use User Settings > Update Download Progress, then restart. |
| Download pauses while playing | Close the game; Nintendo says some games pause downloads while they are being played. |
| Update fails or performance is abnormal | Install System Update, then use the title’s Software Update > Via the Internet command. |
| “Unable to start software” | Restart, update both system and title, check for corrupt data, then delete and redownload if required. |
| Flashing white X | Run the update and corrupt-data procedure, then reseat, replace, format, or bypass the microSD card. |
| Internet or license warning at launch | Test the connection, verify the purchasing account, and check the virtual game card and online-license setting. |
When to stop troubleshooting and contact Nintendo
Contact Nintendo Support after the documented restart, system-update, software-update, corrupt-data, redownload, and storage-isolation steps fail. Tell support which storage path you tested: the original microSD card, a different card, and system memory. Also provide the exact on-screen wording, whether the failure occurs during download or launch, and whether the console can run other software.
A failure that persists with the microSD card removed and a fresh installation in system memory is no longer explained by that card alone. Nintendo’s flashing-white-X guidance says the console may require service in that situation. Avoid repeatedly formatting cards or deleting the same title when the failure is storage-independent; preserve the error details for the support case.
