The new Zelda game in this comparison is The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, a rebuilt version of the 1998 Nintendo 64 adventure coming exclusively to Nintendo Switch 2 on November 5, 2026. It is not a newly announced open-world sequel after Tears of the Kingdom. Nintendo is presenting a modernized, authored classic with overhauled visuals, revised controls, expanded voiced scenes, orchestral music and new guidance features. Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom remain the better fit if your priority is a large, player-directed open world.

What the new Zelda game actually is

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time returns as a remake for Nintendo Switch 2. Nintendo describes it as the Nintendo 64 classic “reborn exclusively for Nintendo Switch 2,” rather than as a new post-Tears of the Kingdom storyline. The remake keeps the identity of a known adventure while rebuilding its presentation and updating how it feels to play on modern hardware.

Release date and platform

  • Launch: November 5, 2026.
  • Platform: Nintendo Switch 2 only, according to Nintendo’s announcement.
  • Physical edition: Nintendo says the first print run has textured foil packaging. Stock and availability depend on retailers.

Nintendo has announced the date and features, but no independent frame-rate testing, review scores or hands-on performance results have been published yet. Claims about smoother performance and faster loading therefore describe Nintendo’s announced target, not a laboratory measurement.

Confirmed remake upgrades

Nintendo says the remake has completely overhauled visuals and textures, remodeled locations, faster loading, smoother performance, refreshed sound and symphonic orchestral music. These changes target the parts of the original that are most visibly tied to 1998 hardware: image quality, environmental detail, transitions and audio presentation.

  • Discover Hyrule as never before: by making your own path, choices, and consequences
  • Ingenuity is the key to survival: find multiple solutions to tons of dynamic puzzles
  • Surprises hide around every corner: scavenge weapons, armor, plants, animals, and more
  • Live off the land: find weapons and armor, cook food, and brew elixirs
  • Utilize special technology: the in-game Sheikah Slate controls, objects and enemies in fun ways

Movement and camera control are also being reworked. New button commands let Link jump and run, while right-stick camera control gives players a modern way to look around. The announcement also promises expanded, fully voiced cutscenes and more character dialogue. Those additions may change how story scenes are paced and presented, but Nintendo has not published a scene-by-scene accounting of what was added.

New guidance and companion features

The remake adds Threads of Time, a progress and objective feature intended to help players track what they are doing. Link can also hum learned songs for the ocarina. Nintendo’s ZELDA NOTES features include a daily record, image-based location challenges, virtual ocarina play, QR-code music-score sharing and a quiz containing more than 2,000 questions. These are announced features; Nintendo has not described every unlock condition, regional restriction or how the daily record is reset.

The table’s progression labels are useful editorial distinctions, not Nintendo’s numeric rankings. Nintendo has not published a formal modern design comparison assigning one game more freedom, better pacing or greater scale.

How Ocarina of Time differs from the two Switch open-world games

Authored route versus player-directed exploration

The central difference is structure. Ocarina of Time is a remake of a fixed 1998 adventure, so its identity is an authored sequence of story beats, locations and challenges. The comparison is best understood as classic progression updated for modern hardware, not as a new sandbox built around unrestricted traversal.

Breath of the Wild is the open-world baseline: its appeal is the freedom to decide where to go and how to approach the broader landscape. Tears of the Kingdom continues that direction as a sequel and extends the setting into the skies and beyond the lands of Hyrule. If you want the game to supply a deliberate route, Ocarina’s remake is the more natural match; if you want to set your own route across a broad world, either Switch open-world game is the closer fit.

Classic pacing versus systemic experimentation

Ocarina’s announced feature set emphasizes presentation, controls, story scenes and assistance tools. That supports a guided adventure in which the sequence of objectives matters. The Switch open-world games are the comparison point for systemic experimentation: their defining editorial contrast is the ability to pursue objectives with more player-directed solutions across a large environment. Nintendo has not provided a feature-by-feature mechanics list for the remake, so it would be inaccurate to promise that it reproduces every system from either open-world title.

Presentation and controls

Ocarina of Time has the clearest confirmed modernization package. Nintendo specifically lists overhauled textures, remodeled locations, faster loading, smoother performance, refreshed sound, symphonic orchestral music, new jump-and-run commands and improved right-stick camera control. It also lists fully voiced expanded cutscenes and additional dialogue.

For Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom, Nintendo’s later materials list Switch 2 editions but do not provide a matching specification sheet for resolution, frame rate, loading times or audio changes. Do not treat the remake’s announced improvements as proof that one of those editions has a particular technical advantage.

Breath of the Wild: the open-world starting point

Why it remains the clearest alternative

Breath of the Wild is the baseline when the decision is about freedom and scale. Its open-world design asks whether you would rather explore broadly and choose your own direction than follow the authored progression associated with Ocarina’s remake. That makes it the strongest choice for a reader who has not played either modern open-world game and wants to understand the format from its starting point.

Switch 2 availability

Nintendo’s later materials list a Breath of the Wild – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition. Nintendo’s listed edition information does not state the edition’s launch date, price, resolution, frame-rate target or upgrade policy, so those details should be checked in the regional Nintendo listing before purchase.

Tears of the Kingdom: the direct sequel and larger setting

Relationship to Breath of the Wild

Nintendo identifies Tears of the Kingdom as the sequel to Breath of the Wild. That relationship matters when choosing an entry point: it is the follow-up to the open-world baseline, whereas Ocarina of Time is a remake of a much older adventure rather than the next chapter after either Switch game.

Beyond Hyrule and into the skies

Nintendo’s announcement says the adventure goes beyond the lands of Hyrule into the skies and an expanded world. In practical terms, it is the option for readers who want the open-world format carried into a broader setting instead of the deliberately bounded, authored identity of a remake. Nintendo has not published a measured map size, completion time or performance comparison, so those figures should not be inferred from the phrase “expanded world.”

Which game should you choose?

Choose Ocarina of Time if you want a remade classic

  • You prefer a deliberate story and objective sequence to choosing your own route through a huge world.
  • You want the original 1998 adventure rebuilt with modern visuals, remodeled locations, orchestral music and revised movement and camera controls.
  • Expanded voiced cutscenes, extra dialogue, Threads of Time and song-based assistance sound more useful than a new open-world sandbox.
  • You are buying specifically for Nintendo Switch 2 and can wait until November 5, 2026.

Choose Breath of the Wild if you want the open-world baseline

  • Your priority is broad exploration and deciding your own direction.
  • You want to start with the first of the two Switch open-world games rather than a remake of the 1998 classic.
  • You are considering Nintendo’s listed Switch 2 Edition and will verify regional pricing and technical details before buying.

Choose Tears of the Kingdom if you want the sequel’s expanded setting

  • You want a direct continuation of Breath of the Wild.
  • You are most interested in exploring beyond Hyrule, including the skies and the expanded world described by Nintendo.
  • You prefer the newer open-world direction to an authored remake and are comfortable beginning with a sequel.

What the announced features mean for returning players

Players who know the original

The remake’s value is not limited to sharper graphics. New movement commands, right-stick camera control, faster loading, reworked locations, orchestral music and voiced expanded scenes all address how the 1998 game is experienced today. Threads of Time and the daily record add modern progress support, while virtual ocarina play and QR-code music-score sharing turn a familiar musical element into a more explicit companion activity.

Players who have never played Ocarina of Time

The remake is positioned as an accessible first exposure to the classic, but Nintendo has not described a difficulty selector, complete accessibility list or a required familiarity with earlier Zelda games. The confirmed guidance features may help with objectives and locations; they should not be treated as a guarantee that every puzzle or progression issue is automatically solved.

Players deciding between editions

Do not use the remake’s confirmed feature list to assume parity with the Switch 2 editions of the open-world games. Nintendo has named those editions, but Nintendo’s announcements do not state matching technical specifications. Compare the regional product pages for price, upgrade terms, included content and release timing when those details are published.

Release and purchase checklist

  1. Confirm that your console is a Nintendo Switch 2, because Nintendo describes Ocarina of Time as exclusive to that system.
  2. Mark November 5, 2026 as the remake’s launch date.
  3. If you want the physical release, check whether the first-print textured foil package is still in stock; Nintendo says availability is retailer-dependent.
  4. Decide whether you want authored classic progression, the open-world starting point of Breath of the Wild or the sequel’s skies-and-beyond-Hyrule setting.
  5. For either Switch 2 Edition, verify the local Nintendo listing for price, release timing, upgrade policy and technical specifications, since Nintendo has not established those figures in its announcement.

A sensible play order

There is no requirement to play the games in a particular order to understand the buying decision. Choose Ocarina of Time first if you want to experience the rebuilt classic as its own authored adventure. Choose Breath of the Wild before Tears of the Kingdom if you want the open-world progression in sequence, because Nintendo explicitly defines Tears of the Kingdom as its sequel. Choose Tears of the Kingdom directly only if the sequel’s expanded setting is more important to you than starting with the open-world baseline.

Bottom line

Ocarina of Time is the new Zelda release announced for November 5, 2026: a Switch 2 remake with rebuilt visuals, locations, controls, sound, orchestral music, expanded voiced scenes and new ZELDA NOTES assistance. It is best understood as a polished, guided classic rather than as a replacement for the open-world formula. Breath of the Wild is the choice for the open-world starting point, while Tears of the Kingdom is the direct sequel that takes that approach into the skies and an expanded world. Your best pick depends on whether you want a modern interpretation of a fixed classic or the broadest player-directed exploration.
