Short answer: Nintendo’s new The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is a one-player Nintendo Switch 2 remake launching November 5, 2026. Nintendo has not announced local or online multiplayer, selectable difficulty modes, or a definitive offline-play promise for the base game. Exploration remains central, with remodeled locations, modernized movement and camera controls, a day/night cycle that continues in towns, and a new Threads of Time progress display. The optional ZELDA NOTES companion adds connected features and requires a Nintendo Account, persistent internet, and a compatible smart device.

What is the new Zelda game?

This release is Nintendo’s rebuilt version of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time for Nintendo Switch 2. Nintendo lists November 5, 2026 as the launch date and describes the game as more than a straight resolution upgrade. The remake has overhauled visuals, fully voiced cutscenes, expanded dialogue, symphonic orchestral music, faster loading, and revised movement and camera controls.

It is exclusive to Nintendo Switch 2. Nintendo has announced both a physical edition and a digital release listing. The regular price shown on Nintendo’s 2026 product page is $59.99, and the estimated download size is 27 GB. The file-size figure is an estimate, so the space required on a particular console or storage card can change if Nintendo issues updates.

Is the new Zelda game multiplayer?

No multiplayer mode has been announced. Nintendo’s official listing specifies “Single system (1),” which identifies the announced version as a one-player game. Nintendo’s published materials do not announce local co-op, split-screen play, competitive multiplayer, or online multiplayer.

What “single system (1)” means

The phrase means Nintendo is listing one player on one Switch 2 system. It is the clearest player-count information currently available for the remake. It does not describe a second-player mode, shared-screen support, or a way for another console to join the adventure.

Do you need Nintendo Switch Online?

Nintendo has not announced a Nintendo Switch Online requirement for the core game, and the product listing does not identify an online multiplayer feature. Because the remake is listed as a single-player title, an online subscription is not presented as a condition for the advertised campaign. Nintendo could publish additional service details before launch, so check the final product page if the company changes the feature set.

Does Ocarina of Time on Switch 2 have difficulty settings?

Difficulty options are unconfirmed. In the Nintendo materials currently available, there is no announced easy mode, hard mode, selectable difficulty screen, or separate challenge setting. That means you should not assume the remake will offer a menu that lets you change combat or puzzle difficulty.

What is known and what is not

  • Known: Nintendo has described the remake’s presentation, controls, loading improvements, and exploration features.
  • Not announced: Easy, normal, hard, master, story, or accessibility-oriented difficulty modes.
  • Practical expectation: Plan around the difficulty Nintendo confirms at launch rather than counting on a selectable mode.

The absence of an announcement is not proof that no setting will exist. Nintendo may reveal additional options in a later update or launch guide. Until then, any claim that the game definitely has an easy or hard mode goes beyond the published information.

How much exploration is in the Switch 2 remake?

Exploration remains a core part of the adventure. Nintendo highlights freely moving the camera through fully remodeled locations, a day/night cycle that continues in towns, and a new Threads of Time display that helps you check story progress and your next objective.

Remodeled locations and free camera movement

The environments have been rebuilt visually rather than simply displayed at a higher resolution. Nintendo also says the camera can be moved freely through these locations. Revised movement and camera controls are intended to make navigation and looking around more responsive than in the original release.

That combination matters because exploration in Ocarina of Time is not limited to walking from one marked destination to another. You move through towns, outdoor areas, dungeons, and other locations while looking for routes, objects, characters, and clues. The announcement confirms the modernized controls and remodeled spaces; it does not promise that every area has been redesigned or that the world has been expanded in size.

Day and night continues in towns

Nintendo specifically notes that the day/night cycle continues in towns. Time is therefore part of the atmosphere and routine of these settlements rather than stopping whenever you enter one. The announcement does not provide a complete schedule of which characters, events, or entrances change at particular hours, so those details should wait for Nintendo’s in-game documentation.

Threads of Time progress display

Threads of Time is a new display for checking story progress and the next objective. It is an exploration aid, not a statement that the game becomes fully guided. Nintendo has not described every screen, marker, or hint it contains, but its stated purpose is to help you understand where you are in the story and what objective comes next.

Can you play the new Zelda game offline?

Nintendo has not explicitly promised offline play for the base game. The Switch 2 listing confirms TV, tabletop, and handheld modes, but it does not use an explicit offline-play statement for the main adventure. You should distinguish those hardware modes from an official guarantee that every feature works without an internet connection.

What the console listing confirms

  • You can use the Switch 2 in TV mode.
  • You can use the console in tabletop mode.
  • You can use the console in handheld mode.

Those are display and play configurations. They do not, by themselves, establish whether an initial download, account check, update, or another connection is required. Nintendo’s published details do not currently specify those requirements for the core remake.

How ZELDA NOTES changes the answer

ZELDA NOTES is a separate companion feature set. Nintendo says its functions require a Nintendo Account, persistent internet, and a compatible smart device. Those requirements apply to the connected companion service, not automatically to the console campaign. Nintendo’s listing does not state that ZELDA NOTES is required to start or finish the base game.

If you want to play without internet access, treat the core game and ZELDA NOTES as two different questions. The console modes are confirmed, while offline requirements for the base software remain unstated. The companion’s internet requirement is explicit.

What does ZELDA NOTES do?

ZELDA NOTES provides optional connected tools and activities linked to the remake. Nintendo has announced the following features:

Feature Purpose described by Nintendo Connection requirement
Daily accomplishment record Records your daily accomplishments Nintendo Account, persistent internet, and compatible smart device
Enemy and progress statistics Shows statistics related to enemies and your progress Nintendo Account, persistent internet, and compatible smart device
Image-based location challenges Uses images as location-oriented challenges Nintendo Account, persistent internet, and compatible smart device
Virtual ocarina Provides an ocarina experience on the companion device Nintendo Account, persistent internet, and compatible smart device
QR-shareable music scores Lets you share music scores through QR codes Nintendo Account, persistent internet, and compatible smart device
Daily quiz Offers more than 2,000 questions Nintendo Account, persistent internet, and compatible smart device

Nintendo describes the daily quiz as containing over 2,000 questions. That number is a Nintendo 2026 claim and describes the announced companion content, not the number of questions in the console game itself.

Is ZELDA NOTES required?

No requirement for ZELDA NOTES is stated for the core console listing. It is best understood as an optional companion layer: useful if you want statistics, records, quizzes, image challenges, music sharing, or the virtual ocarina, but separate from the advertised one-player adventure. You will need the listed account, internet, and smart-device setup to use those functions.
