Neither new nor used consoles are always the better value. A new console can be worth the premium when it brings dependable warranty coverage, straightforward returns, or the exact model and accessories you need. A pre-owned or certified-refurbished console can cost less, but the savings matter only if the model matches your needs and the seller offers enough inspection, return, or warranty protection to manage the risk.
Compare the same console generation, edition, storage, and included accessories at current prices. Then weigh the total cost against the seller’s protections and the condition you can verify. The policy examples below are US-specific; terms can differ by seller, listing, and location.
What counts as new, used, and certified refurbished?
These labels are not interchangeable. A new console is sold as new by a retailer or manufacturer. A used or pre-owned console has had a previous owner; it may be sold by a retailer or directly by an individual, and the seller’s testing and protections vary. Certified refurbished generally means the seller or manufacturer has inspected and tested the console before resale, but the actual process and warranty depend on the program.

Compare the same console before comparing prices
A lower price is not a saving if the console is a different edition that cannot do what you need. Match the generation and model, disc or digital edition, storage, condition, and what comes in the box. Check whether the offer includes a working controller, required cables, stand, and—on a disc model—the disc drive.
For example, Xbox Series S is digital-only and does not play physical discs. It is not a like-for-like substitute for a disc-equipped console if you own physical games or rely on buying and borrowing them. Xbox Series S product listing

Include your game library in the comparison too. A digital-only system depends on digital purchases and access to the relevant storefront; a disc model can support physical games when the game and console are compatible. Verify the edition before treating two listings as comparable.

Compare the protections that come with each offer
Warranty, return, and replacement terms change the real value of a purchase. Confirm who provides the coverage, how long it lasts, what it covers, and whether it applies to a second owner. Check the exact listing’s policy, including return shipping, fees, exclusions, and the deadline to report a problem.

Warranty coverage is not automatic just because a console looks nearly new. PlayStation says third-party used PlayStation products are not covered by its warranty, while its certified-refurbished products include warranty coverage. PlayStation US buying guide Nintendo also ties its warranty information to the product’s original warranty period and evidence of original purchase; Nintendo Store US limits direct physical-product returns to 30 days and excludes opened or used items. Those are separate policies, so check the seller and the product’s applicable terms. Nintendo warranty and service information · Nintendo Store US return policy
Is the used-console discount worth it?
There is no supported market-wide average saving that establishes how much less a used console typically costs. One offer-specific example: Sony’s US certified-refurbished PS5 Slim listing advertises $100 off versus the newer PS5 Slim model. That is a comparison tied to that listing, not evidence of the usual discount for used consoles. Sony certified-refurbished PS5 Slim listing

- Enjoy smooth and fluid high frame rate gameplay at up to 120 fps for compatible games, with support for 120Hz output on 4K displays.
- PS5 consoles support an 8K output, so you can play games on your 4320p resolution display.
- Maximize your play sessions with near-instant load times for installed PS5 games.
- 825GB SSD allows ultra-fast load times, while 3-D audio output produces crisp acoustics.
- Explore uncharted virtual territories and slay dragons with this sleek Sony PlayStation 5 gaming console.
For your own comparison, calculate the difference between current prices for the same model and edition. Account for missing or replacement accessories, likely return costs, and whether the used offer includes a credible warranty. A smaller discount may not compensate for a shorter return window or no warranty; a substantial verified saving may make sense when you can inspect the system and return it if something is wrong.
How to assess a private-sale console
A private sale can have fewer protections than a retailer purchase, so arrange a working demonstration and establish the console’s account status before paying. PlayStation advises asking for a video that shows ports, buttons, and disc drives working where applicable, and says to ensure the seller has deactivated the console and no longer has access to it. - Ask for a test video. Have the seller show the console powering on, displaying an image over HDMI, pairing with the controller, and responding to its buttons. Ask to see each USB port and the disc drive working if the model has one. A video can help screen a listing, but it is not a substitute for an in-person test.
- Test it at pickup when possible. Check power, display, controller pairing and controls, Wi-Fi or network connection, and the disc drive where applicable. Look for physical damage, unusual fan noise, or signs of overheating.
- Confirm account and reset status. Make sure the system is reset and removed from the previous owner’s account, and that the seller has deactivated it and no longer has access. Do not pay until you can verify the console is usable with your own account.
- Confirm exactly what is included. Check the controller, cables, stand, and other accessories against the listing. Ask whether parts are original or replacements, and agree on the price and included items before completing the sale.
Use this decision rule for your shortlist
- Choose new when the price premium is reasonable for the warranty, return process, and exact edition or accessories you need.
- Consider certified refurbished when the seller identifies a real inspection and testing program, states the warranty clearly, and the savings are meaningful against the same new model.
- Consider retailer pre-owned when the condition and included items are clear and you have verified the return or replacement window and any warranty.
- Consider a private sale only when you can verify the console’s operation and account status and are comfortable with the seller’s protections—or lack of them.
Before buying, record the exact model and edition, total price, included accessories, warranty provider and duration, return deadline and costs, and seller’s account or proof-of-purchase information. Policies and offers can change; use the current terms attached to the specific listing rather than assuming an example above applies to your purchase.
