Choose .com when the exact name is available, suits your brand, and serves a broad audience without awkward compromises. Choose a newer domain ending when it makes the full address clearer or a better fit for the people you want to reach. Neither option is a universal winner, and the sources reviewed here do not establish a search-ranking advantage for either.
What “new top-level domain” means
A top-level domain (TLD) is the part of a web address after the final dot: .com and .design are examples. “New gTLD” refers to newer generic top-level domains, many of which became available after ICANN’s 2012 application round. ICANN says that round resulted in more than 1,200 new gTLDs. The term can be confusing: .com is also a generic TLD, even though it is much more familiar and longstanding.
This comparison is about registering a domain name for a website or project. It is not about applying to operate a top-level-domain registry. Registry operators run the system behind an extension; ordinary registrants choose and register a name under one. ICANN’s 2026 announcement and its application preparation checklist describe the separate registry process.
When .com is the better choice
- The name is available and natural. If your preferred brand name works as a .com without added words, confusing spelling, or other compromises, it is a straightforward choice for a broad audience.
- Your audience expects a conventional address. Consider whether the people you serve will readily recognize and type the complete domain. Familiarity may matter to your specific audience, but the reviewed sources do not establish a universal recognition or trust ranking by extension.
- You want a flexible brand. A broad extension can suit a business whose products, location, or audience may change. This is a branding consideration, not a guaranteed performance benefit.
When a newer extension may fit better
A newer ending can be worth considering if it makes the complete address more distinctive, descriptive, or aligned with a business, community, place, or project. For example, an extension connected to the organization’s work may help explain the address at a glance. That benefit depends on the name and audience; the extension alone cannot establish trust or make a brand memorable.

ICANN’s 2025 survey offers context about how marketers view the opportunity, not proof of what customers do. It surveyed more than 2,000 marketing leaders across Brazil, China, India, Mexico, Nigeria, South Africa, the U.K., and the U.S. After gTLDs were defined, 92% said they could see potential benefits. Respondents cited differentiation (46%), customer trust (45%), control over online presence (44%), and improved SEO (44%) among potential benefits. These are survey perceptions, not measured causal effects, consumer preferences, or evidence of a ranking gain. ICANN’s survey announcement also reports that 52% believed gTLDs had strong potential to enhance online brand presence.
Does a domain extension affect SEO?
Do not choose a newer extension on the promise of better Google rankings. Google’s site-name guidance, last updated 10 December 2025, explains how Google Search selects and displays a site name and what site owners can provide. It is not a comparison of search rankings by TLD, so it does not establish that a new extension improves SEO—or that .com ranks better.

Keep the decision focused on the domain’s usefulness to people: the clarity of the full address, its fit with your identity, and whether the intended audience can recognize and use it. Treat SEO claims about a particular extension cautiously unless they are supported by evidence that directly compares ranking outcomes.

How to compare your actual options
- Check exact-name availability. Search for the name you want in .com and in the relevant extensions. Availability changes, so confirm it with a registrar when you are ready to register.
- Compare complete addresses. Read each option as a customer would see it, not as an extension in isolation. Look for ambiguity, awkward spelling, or a meaning that could be misunderstood.
- Test it with your intended audience. Ask whether the people you need to reach understand the ending, can remember the complete address, and would know how to type it. This is a practical, audience-specific check; the sources do not assign a universal numerical value to recognition or recall.
- Check the business fit. Decide whether the ending will still make sense if your offering, audience, or positioning changes.
- Review the registrar’s current terms. Compare registration and renewal costs, privacy options, transfer terms, DNS controls, and support before purchasing. Prices and terms vary and can change; no current registrar price comparison is established here.
What if the .com is taken?
First decide whether the exact .com is important enough to justify changing the brand or considering another available name. If alternatives make the address confusing or weaken the identity you want to build, compare relevant extensions instead of treating .com as mandatory. Choose the option whose entire address is clearest and most appropriate for your audience, and confirm its current availability and terms before committing.

Buying a domain is not operating a TLD
If you are choosing an address for a website, you do not need to apply to ICANN to create or operate the extension. Operating a custom TLD is a separate registry business with eligibility, evaluation, technical, operational, financial, and contractual requirements. ICANN’s 2026 application window opened on 30 April and closed on 12 August 2026; those dates concerned registry applicants, not ordinary domain buyers. Its preparation checklist describes the process.
ICANN’s archived overview describes possible operator benefits such as branding and control over registration rules, alongside investment, staffing, operational, and contractual responsibilities. The page is marked © 2015, so it is useful for understanding the distinction, not for current application fees or requirements.
