A year-long study found that low oxygen was widespread but uneven in Florida’s Banana River Lagoon, especially near the sediment. From July 2024 through June 2025, researchers monitored dissolved oxygen at 80 locations and found that readings near the bottom could differ from those higher in the water. The results show why mid-depth or occasional daytime measurements may miss short-lived oxygen stress at the lagoon floor.
What the Banana River study found
The study, led by Florida Tech marine sciences assistant professor Austin Fox, examined bottom-water oxygen across a shallow estuary in the Indian River Lagoon system. The peer-reviewed paper, “Spatiotemporal extent of diel and episodic hypoxia in bottom water of a shallow, well-mixed estuary,” was published in Frontiers in Marine Science on August 31, 2026. Florida Tech announced the findings on October 7, 2026. Read the paper and Florida Tech’s announcement.
Hypoxia means low dissolved oxygen in water. In this study, oxygen conditions varied across both the lagoon and the daily cycle. A low-oxygen layer near the bottom can affect organisms living in or on the sediment even when water above it has more oxygen.
How to interpret the study’s oxygen figures
The headline numbers describe different measurements and should not be treated as interchangeable estimates of how much of the lagoon was hypoxic.

| Finding | What it measures |
|---|---|
| 80 monitoring locations | The year-long network of dissolved-oxygen monitoring locations focused on bottom water. |
| 90% of the time, at least one sensor recorded hypoxia | A network-wide, any-sensor statistic reported by Florida Tech. It does not mean 90% of the lagoon was hypoxic or that 90% of all readings were hypoxic. |
| 11 occasions below 2.0 mg/L, lasting 1–8 hours | The paper’s count of episodes when the lagoon-wide average bottom-water oxygen concentration fell below 2.0 mg/L during the study year. |
| 10–15% lower oxygen near the sediment | Florida Tech’s reported comparison of measurements at the sediment-water interface with surface or mid-depth readings. |
| 0.7 mg/L lower average bottom-water oxygen | The paper’s separate comparison with mid-depth oxygen at the single St. Johns River Water Management District sensor within the study area. |
The percentage comparison and the 0.7 mg/L difference come from different sources and comparisons; neither is a universal gap that applies to every location or time. The figures are reported by Florida Tech and in the journal paper.
Why oxygen can be lower at the lagoon floor
Banana River Lagoon is shallow, averaging 1.7 meters deep according to the paper, with limited tidal exchange. Wind is an important mixing force. Although the system does not maintain persistent stratification, oxygen at the sediment-water boundary can still fall below levels measured higher in the water column, and the study found that conditions changed over time as well as from place to place.

Sediment and organic-rich muck
Fine-grained, organic-rich sediment—often called “muck”—can consume oxygen as organic matter breaks down. Florida Tech reported an association between muck deposits and hypoxia as far as 500 meters from the deposits’ physical footprint. The paper discusses sediment oxygen demand and benthic flux: oxygen depletion can weaken the oxygenated layer in sediment and contribute to the return of nutrients, including phosphorus, from sediment to water. That internal nutrient loading can help sustain eutrophication.

Its interpretation is that, in this very shallow lagoon, the type of substrate may predict hypoxia better than depth alone; shallow water should not be treated as automatically well oxygenated.

Why ordinary monitoring can miss short low-oxygen events
A mid-depth sensor does not necessarily represent conditions at the sediment surface. Likewise, a daytime spot measurement can miss a brief or daily-cycle low-oxygen period. The paper cautions that discrete daytime sampling may overestimate mean oxygen across the full diel cycle. The 80-location, year-long design makes the study useful for revealing spatial and temporal variation that occasional sampling could overlook.
- Bottom-water and mid-depth readings answer different questions; one cannot safely stand in for the other in every setting.
- Sampling time matters when oxygen varies over a daily cycle or during short episodes.
- Location and substrate matter: conditions near muck or other sediment types may not match a reading taken elsewhere.
What the findings do—and do not—establish
The observations cover one lagoon and one year, from July 1, 2024, through June 30, 2025. They document bottom-water hypoxia and identify sediment-linked nutrient recycling as a mechanism relevant to eutrophication. They do not quantify how much this process will change future harmful algal bloom frequency, nor do they demonstrate that a particular intervention will reverse the nutrient feedback.

Florida Tech says the next research focus is to quantify hypoxia’s effects across the broader Indian River Lagoon and its tributaries. Until that work establishes the wider effects, the Banana River results are best read as evidence that near-bottom oxygen and sediment processes deserve attention in monitoring and management—not as a quantified forecast for the entire lagoon system.
