A National Taiwan University-led team has developed a biodegradable patch designed to sense pressure from blood accumulating around the spinal cord after surgery and release the clot-dissolving drug urokinase when activated by ultrasound. The concept has shown promising laboratory results, but it is not yet a treatment available to patients.
What the smart patch is designed to do
The device combines two functions in one extremely thin, biodegradable nanofiber patch. First, it monitors pressure changes that could indicate blood collecting around the spinal cord after an operation. Second, it delivers urokinase locally when an external ultrasound signal activates the patch.
That combination is intended to provide an early warning and a targeted response without requiring a second invasive procedure. The patch is described as a core-shell structure made from biodegradable polymer and glycine fibers with piezoelectric behavior.
How pressure sensing works without a battery
Piezoelectric materials generate an electrical signal when they are mechanically deformed. In this design, pressure from accumulating fluid or blood deforms the fibers, producing an electrical output that can be monitored without a separate power source for the sensing element.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The reported laboratory test produced approximately 8 volts when the patch was exposed to 80 pascals of pressure. That result demonstrates pressure-to-electricity conversion in the material; it does not establish a diagnostic pressure threshold in human patients or prove that the signal can reliably distinguish a dangerous clot from normal postoperative changes.
How ultrasound releases the clot-dissolving drug
Urokinase is the patch’s experimental payload. It is a thrombolytic drug that can break down fibrin in a blood clot. The patch is designed to hold the drug until ultrasound is applied, allowing clinicians to trigger release from outside the body rather than relying on continuous, uncontrolled delivery.

In laboratory testing, ultrasound produced approximately six times more urokinase release than the unstimulated condition. The approach could concentrate treatment near the surgical site while limiting exposure elsewhere, although the appropriate drug dose, ultrasound intensity, treatment duration and safe operating window still have to be established in living subjects.

| Measure | Reported result | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Pressure-generated electrical output | Approximately 8 volts under 80 pascals of applied pressure | The material can generate a measurable signal from mechanical pressure without an external sensing power source. |
| Ultrasound-controlled drug release | Approximately six times more urokinase release with ultrasound than without stimulation | Ultrasound can increase release from the patch in laboratory conditions. |
| Clot breakdown | Approximately 70% degradation in laboratory blood-clot experiments | The experimental system reduced clot material in vitro; this is not a patient outcome or a guarantee of complete clot removal. |
| Evidence stage | Laboratory research reported by National Taiwan University in 2026 | Animal safety, human effectiveness, regulatory clearance and routine postoperative use remain unestablished. |
How it compares with an earlier smart-clot patch
The idea belongs to an experimental research field rather than an established category of consumer medical devices. A previous patch developed by researchers at North Carolina State University and the University of North Carolina used thrombin-responsive heparin release and was tested in an animal model.

| System | Sensing or response principle | Therapeutic trigger | Payload | Evidence stage | Human-use status |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| National Taiwan University patch | Piezoelectric pressure sensing | Externally applied ultrasound | Urokinase | Laboratory blood-clot experiments | Experimental; no patient use established |
| Earlier NC State/UNC patch | Thrombin-responsive release | Thrombin response | Heparin | Animal model | Experimental; no routine clinical use established |
The newer design adds self-powered pressure sensing and an externally controlled ultrasound response, while the earlier system responded chemically to thrombin. Neither represents a cleared or routinely available treatment.
Is the patch available after spinal surgery?
No. The reported work is a preclinical technology demonstration, not a clinical treatment. The study does not establish that the patch is safe when implanted near the spinal cord, that its materials degrade on a predictable schedule, or that it improves outcomes for people after surgery. It also does not provide regulatory authorization or identify a patient-ready retail product.

The report states that additional animal studies and clinical evaluations are necessary. Those stages would need to answer practical questions such as:

- Can the patch be placed safely and remain in the intended location?
- What pressure level and electrical signal correspond to a clinically important accumulation of blood?
- How precisely can ultrasound control urokinase release, and can treatment avoid damaging nearby tissue?
- How quickly and completely do the polymer and glycine fibers biodegrade?
- Does local urokinase delivery control a clot without causing dangerous bleeding?
- Do the laboratory clot-degradation results translate into better recovery or fewer repeat operations?
Only well-designed animal and human studies can answer those questions. Laboratory performance alone cannot predict the patch’s benefit-risk balance in postoperative patients.
Publication and stated goal
The reported paper is Fu-Cheng Kao et al., “Ultrasound-responsive piezoelectric core-shell nanofiber patch for theranostic management of blood clot-related complications,” published in Nano Energy in 2026 (DOI: 10.1016/j.nanoen.2026.112363).
“Our goal is to develop intelligent biomaterials that can do more than simply monitor physiological conditions. By combining self-powered sensing with ultrasound-controlled drug delivery, we hope to create a new generation of medical devices that can detect potential complications and support timely, localized treatment. This technology could eventually help improve patient safety and reduce the need for additional invasive procedures,” said co-corresponding author Lin, distinguished professor and chair of the Department of Biomedical Engineering at National Taiwan University.

The practical takeaway
This patch is a promising laboratory platform that unites pressure sensing, biodegradable materials and ultrasound-triggered urokinase delivery. Its voltage, release and clot-degradation figures are laboratory measurements—not evidence that patients can be diagnosed or treated with it today. Animal testing, clinical trials and regulatory review are still required before its safety or effectiveness after spinal surgery can be assessed.
