If your settings disappeared after reinstalling new Outlook for Windows, sign in to the intended account first, then determine whether you are restoring a classic Outlook migration or simply setting up the app again. A Microsoft-documented migration can be retried at Settings > Accounts > Your accounts > Manage > Get Started for the primary account, but only when classic Outlook had Store my Outlook settings in the cloud enabled. Reinstalling new Outlook by itself is not documented as a complete backup-and-restore method for preferences that existed only in new Outlook.

What actually restores Outlook settings?

There are three different situations that look like one problem:

  • Classic-to-new migration: settings can be imported from classic Outlook during setup, and Microsoft provides a way to retry that import.
  • Account setup after reinstall: signing in or adding an account reconnects mail, calendar and account data, but it does not prove that every preference has returned.
  • App malfunction: Windows Repair or Reset may address an installation problem, but Microsoft’s repair guidance does not promise that either operation recovers Outlook preferences.

Use the recovery path that matches your case instead of repeatedly reinstalling. The documented migration workflow is described in Microsoft’s import-settings guidance for new Outlook.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The key distinction is whether the missing item belongs to the account, to classic Outlook, or only to the local new Outlook installation. Messages and calendar entries returning after sign-in show that the mailbox connected. They do not, by themselves, show that display, notification, signature or scheduling preferences were restored.

1. Confirm the Outlook app and account first

Check whether you are in new Outlook or classic Outlook

New Outlook and classic Outlook have different settings stores and different migration behavior. Look at the application you opened before changing anything. If classic Outlook is still installed, keep it available while you attempt an import; it is the source from which Microsoft documents the settings migration.

This check prevents a common mistake: changing options in classic Outlook while expecting the newly installed app to change, or looking for the migration controls in the classic interface. The retry command described by Microsoft is located in new Outlook, while the cloud-storage prerequisite is located in classic Outlook.

Sign in to the intended account

After a Microsoft Store installation, an account may not be added automatically. Open new Outlook and follow its sign-in or account-add prompts. Microsoft’s setup documentation lists Microsoft accounts, work or school accounts, and third-party accounts including Gmail, Yahoo and iCloud; other third-party mailboxes may connect through IMAP. The account type and sign-in identity matter because a different account can make a correctly installed app appear to have lost its settings. See Microsoft’s getting-started guide for new Outlook for the supported setup paths.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the computer has several Microsoft identities, do not assume that the first account displayed is the one used previously. Compare the address, organization and mailbox contents with the old installation. A personal Microsoft account and a work or school account can both be valid sign-in choices while exposing different mailboxes and preferences.

Do not treat account data as proof that preferences were restored

Seeing messages, folders or calendar items after sign-in confirms that the account connected. It does not establish that local display choices, signatures, notification rules or other preferences were recovered. Continue with the migration check below if you expected classic Outlook settings to appear.

Likewise, an empty inbox does not necessarily mean that settings are missing. It can indicate that the wrong identity was added, that a third-party account still needs its provider-specific sign-in, or that the mailbox has not finished connecting. Resolve the account identity before evaluating the settings result.

2. Check the classic Outlook migration prerequisite

Enable cloud storage in classic Outlook

The documented import depends on a setting in classic Outlook. In that app, open General options and find Store my Outlook settings in the cloud (requires restarting Outlook). The option must have been selected for the classic-to-new import to work. If you are enabling it now, restart classic Outlook as requested before attempting the import again.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This prerequisite is easy to miss because it belongs to classic Outlook, not the newly installed app. If classic Outlook was removed before its settings were stored in the cloud, Microsoft’s documented migration path has no stated way to reconstruct those preferences from the reinstall alone.

Do not skip the restart. The option itself says a restart is required, so turning it on and immediately checking new Outlook may leave the migration unavailable. Close and reopen classic Outlook first, then return to new Outlook and retry the import.

What this prerequisite does—and does not—mean

Cloud storage makes the classic Outlook settings available for the documented migration. It is not described as a universal backup of every setting in new Outlook. In particular, Microsoft does not state that reinstalling new Outlook restores all preferences that were configured only in new Outlook.

That distinction matters after a clean Windows setup or an app removal. The cloud option is a prerequisite for moving classic Outlook preferences into new Outlook; it is not an instruction to export a complete profile, and it does not turn every future new Outlook change into a guaranteed restore point.

3. Retry the import in new Outlook

  1. Open new Outlook for Windows.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Open Accounts, then Your accounts.
  4. Locate the top-most account, which is the primary account, and select Manage beside it.
  5. Choose Get Started to start the settings import.
  6. Allow the process to finish, then review the affected mail and calendar preferences.

The Manage control must be opened for the primary account; selecting another account does not follow Microsoft’s documented retry path. If Get Started is not available, verify that you are in new Outlook, that the account is the intended primary account, and that classic Outlook’s cloud-settings option was enabled.

Work through the path in order rather than searching only for a general import button. Microsoft places the retry action under the account’s management controls. If you have more than one account, use the top-most account shown in Your accounts, because that is the account identified as primary for this workflow.

After the import completes, inspect both mail and calendar areas. A migration can appear successful because one visible preference changed while another still needs review. Record any items that remain at defaults so you can distinguish a setting outside the documented list from an import that did not run.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Know which settings the documented import can bring over

Microsoft describes the import as a first-time classic-to-new Outlook setup feature. The following examples are explicitly included in its documentation:

Area Examples of settings Microsoft lists What to expect
Mail and reading Conversation grouping, reading-pane position, density, preview text, Focused/Other, mark-as-read behavior These are examples of classic Outlook preferences that can be imported; they are not a guarantee that every mail option is included.
Appearance and composition Dark mode, default font, signatures Review the result after import, especially if more than one account uses a signature.
Automation and alerts Auto-replies, notification settings, Quick Steps Confirm account-specific behavior after migration rather than assuming all rules or customizations transferred.
Calendar scheduling Meeting hours, start and end meetings early, reminders, time zones, week numbers Check time-zone and meeting-duration choices before scheduling new events.
Calendar display and formats Date and time format, week start, work-week days, calendar view These affect how appointments are displayed and organized, not whether account data exists.

The list is a description of the documented import scope, not a promise that every preference, add-in configuration, rule or new-Outlook-only choice is recoverable. If you have no classic Outlook settings to migrate, Microsoft says new Outlook uses default settings.

Use the table as a review checklist. For mail, check conversation grouping, reading-pane location, density, preview text, Focused or Other, and mark-as-read behavior. For composition, check the default font and each signature. For alerts and automation, verify notifications, auto-replies and Quick Steps. For calendars, check working hours, early meeting start and end behavior, reminders, time zone, week numbers, date and time formats, week start, work-week days and the selected calendar view.

Some preferences are account-sensitive. For example, a signature or notification choice may behave differently when several mailboxes are present. Confirm the account selector before concluding that an imported setting is wrong.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Separate reinstall steps from settings recovery

Install or open the Microsoft Store version

Microsoft’s reinstall instructions direct you to the Microsoft Store listing for new Outlook. Select Get to download the app, or Open if it is already installed. These labels describe installation state; neither one indicates that a previous preference set has been restored.

If the Store shows Open, avoid downloading a second copy or repeatedly removing and reinstalling the same app as a substitute for migration. Open the installed app, sign in, and use the account migration path when it applies.

Add the account if it is missing

After the app opens, follow the prompts to add the mailbox that should be used. Automatic account detection can differ after a reinstall, particularly when the previous installation used a different identity or when a third-party account requires a separate sign-in. Use the account type supported by your provider: Microsoft account, work or school account, Gmail, Yahoo, iCloud or another mailbox configured through IMAP, as applicable.

Adding an account is a connection step, not a settings-import command. Complete it before looking for Manage and Get Started, because those controls depend on the account being present in new Outlook.

Why reinstalling alone may leave defaults

The installation process replaces or re-establishes the app; it is not documented as a complete export and import of new Outlook preferences. Therefore, a successful download followed by a successful sign-in can still leave density, notifications, signatures, calendar display and similar choices at their defaults unless they came through the classic-to-new migration.

This is why another reinstall is unlikely to solve a settings-only complaint. Reinstallation addresses whether the application is present. Migration addresses whether classic Outlook preferences are available to new Outlook. Account setup addresses which mailbox is connected. They are related, but they are not interchangeable operations.

6. Use Outlook on the web as a diagnostic check

Microsoft states that changes made in new Outlook are also reflected in Outlook on the web. Open the web version for the same account and compare a relevant preference with the desktop app. This can help identify whether a visible setting is associated with the account rather than only with the local installation.

For a useful comparison, choose one setting at a time: dark mode, reading layout, calendar view, time zone or another preference that is easy to identify in both places. Confirm that the web session uses the same account and not a second Microsoft identity. Then note whether the desktop and web values agree after signing out and back in.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use this comparison as a diagnostic, not as proof of a complete backup. The cited Microsoft guidance does not characterize web reflection as a full backup for every new Outlook preference. A setting visible on the web may still require manual review in the reinstalled Windows app.

If the web version shows the expected choice while Windows does not, the account may still contain the setting and the desktop app may need review or troubleshooting. If neither location shows it, do not assume that reinstalling will recreate it; determine whether the preference was a classic Outlook setting eligible for import or a new Outlook-only choice.

7. Try Windows Repair only for an app problem

Open the app’s advanced options

Windows provides a general app-repair path when it is available:

  1. Open Windows settings and locate the installed-apps list.
  2. Select new Outlook and open its Advanced options.
  3. Choose Repair if the option is offered.
  4. Reopen Outlook and check whether the original malfunction has stopped.

Microsoft’s instructions are published in Repair apps and programs in Windows. The exact Windows navigation can vary by release, but the relevant controls are Advanced options and Repair.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use Repair when the symptom is an app failure, such as Outlook refusing to open or behaving abnormally, rather than as the first response to a missing preference. Before repairing, write down the account identity and any settings you can still inspect so that you can compare the result afterward.

Use Reset only when Repair is unavailable or ineffective

Microsoft advises trying Reset if Repair is unavailable or does not fix the app. Reset is general troubleshooting, not a documented Outlook-settings recovery operation. The cited guidance does not establish that Reset preserves or restores preferences, so save any information you can still access and use Reset only when correcting the app problem is more important than retaining its current local state.

Do not use Reset simply because Get Started is missing. First confirm the app type, account, primary-account position and classic Outlook cloud-setting prerequisite. Reset cannot substitute for a migration that was never enabled.

8. Troubleshoot by symptom

The account is missing

  • Open new Outlook and add the intended account through the sign-in prompts.
  • Check that you used the correct Microsoft, work or school identity.
  • For third-party mail, select the provider’s supported sign-in route or configure the mailbox through IMAP when appropriate.
  • After the account appears, return to Settings > Accounts > Your accounts and identify the primary account before looking for Manage > Get Started.

The migration control is missing

  • Confirm that you opened new Outlook rather than classic Outlook.
  • Verify that the account you selected is the top-most, primary account.
  • In classic Outlook, check General > Store my Outlook settings in the cloud (requires restarting Outlook), enable it if necessary, restart classic Outlook, then retry.
  • If classic Outlook is not available and no cloud-stored settings exist, the documented import route may not be possible.

If the control remains absent after these checks, document what you can see: the app name, account list, whether classic Outlook opens, and whether the cloud option was enabled. This prevents you from treating an account-setup issue as a failed import.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Some settings returned, but others did not

Compare the missing item with Microsoft’s documented examples. Mail and calendar preferences such as reading-pane position, density, reminders, time zones and week-start choices are within the described migration scope. A preference created only in new Outlook, an item outside the listed examples, or an add-in-specific configuration is not guaranteed by that documentation. Re-enter such choices manually after confirming the correct account.

Check the visible result in both mail and calendar before deciding that the migration failed. A changed reading pane together with default calendar hours can mean that only one category still needs review, not that the entire operation was unsuccessful.

The wrong account appears to have settings

Compare the address and mailbox contents, then inspect which account is top-most in Your accounts. The retry path is tied to the primary account. If the old installation used a work or school identity and the reinstall opened a personal Microsoft account, sign out or add the correct account through the supported setup prompts before evaluating imported preferences.

The app still hangs, freezes or behaves incorrectly

Settings recovery and app stability are separate problems. First complete the account and migration checks so you do not confuse a malfunction with missing data. If the app remains unstable, follow Microsoft’s Outlook troubleshooting guidance, then consider Windows Repair and, if necessary, Reset. Neither the troubleshooting page nor the Windows repair procedure should be read as a guarantee that preferences will be recovered.

9. A practical recovery order

Use this sequence when you want the fewest destructive changes:

  1. Identify whether the installation is new Outlook or classic Outlook.
  2. Sign in with the account that previously held the mailbox and preferences.
  3. Confirm whether classic Outlook is still available.
  4. In classic Outlook, verify and, if needed, enable Store my Outlook settings in the cloud (requires restarting Outlook); restart classic Outlook.
  5. In new Outlook, open Settings > Accounts > Your accounts.
  6. Select Manage for the primary account and choose Get Started.
  7. Review the imported mail and calendar settings listed by Microsoft.
  8. Compare a relevant preference with Outlook on the web for the same account.
  9. Only if the app itself remains faulty, try Windows Repair; use Reset if Repair is unavailable or ineffective.

This order keeps account correction and migration ahead of operations that may alter the app’s local state. It also gives you a clear stopping point: if the mailbox works, the migration has been retried, and only an unlisted new Outlook preference is missing, further reinstalls are not a documented recovery method.

10. What you can and cannot conclude

  • You can conclude: the account is connected when its data appears; classic Outlook settings may be imported when the cloud-storage prerequisite is met; and a missed migration can be retried from the primary account’s settings.
  • You cannot conclude: that reinstalling the Microsoft Store app restored every previous preference, that sign-in alone imported classic settings, or that Windows Reset will preserve or recover Outlook settings.
  • You should verify manually: signatures, notification behavior, reading layout, dark mode, default font, calendar time zone, reminders and other settings that affect daily work.

The important boundary is between migration and reinstallation. Microsoft documents a classic-to-new import and a retry command; it does not document reinstalling new Outlook as a universal restore mechanism for new Outlook-only preferences.

Frequently asked questions

Why did my Outlook settings disappear after reinstalling?

A reinstall can reconnect the app without restoring every preference. Microsoft documents importing settings from classic Outlook, not a complete restore of all settings that existed only in new Outlook. Sign in to the correct account, then check whether a classic-to-new migration can be retried.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I import my old Outlook settings into new Outlook?

In classic Outlook, enable General > Store my Outlook settings in the cloud (requires restarting Outlook) and restart classic Outlook. In new Outlook, open Settings > Accounts > Your accounts, choose Manage beside the top-most primary account, and select Get Started.

Will signing in restore my signatures and notifications?

Sign-in reconnects the account but does not guarantee that every preference returns. Signatures and notification settings are among the examples Microsoft lists for classic-to-new import, so verify that the migration ran and review them manually afterward.

What if I no longer have classic Outlook?

If classic Outlook is unavailable and its settings were not already stored through the cloud-settings option, Microsoft’s documented import route may not be possible. New Outlook can still be installed and configured, but preferences outside the available account setup may need to be entered manually.

Can Outlook on the web restore the Windows app?

Microsoft says changes made in new Outlook are reflected in Outlook on the web, making the web version useful for comparison. It is not documented as a complete backup for every new Outlook preference, so use it as a diagnostic rather than a guaranteed restore source.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I use Windows Reset when settings are missing?

Not as the first step. Reset is general app troubleshooting and is suggested when Repair is unavailable or ineffective. Microsoft does not state that Reset restores or preserves Outlook settings. Check the account and migration path first.

Why is Get Started missing?

Confirm that you are using new Outlook, that the intended account is present, that you selected Manage for the top-most primary account, and that classic Outlook’s cloud-settings option was enabled and followed by a restart. If no cloud-stored classic settings exist, the documented retry control may not be available.

Does the migration include calendar preferences?

Yes, Microsoft lists calendar examples including meeting hours, starting and ending meetings early, reminders, time zones, week numbers, date and time format, week start, work-week days and calendar view. Review each item after import rather than assuming every calendar preference transferred.

Are add-ins, rules and every custom option guaranteed to return?

No. The documented list contains specific mail, appearance, automation and calendar examples. It does not promise recovery of every preference, add-in configuration, rule or setting created only in new Outlook. Treat unlisted items as needing manual verification.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why did my Outlook settings disappear after reinstalling?

Reinstalling can reconnect the app without restoring every preference. Microsoft documents importing settings from classic Outlook, not a complete restore of all settings created only in new Outlook.

How do I import old Outlook settings into new Outlook?

Enable General > Store my Outlook settings in the cloud (requires restarting Outlook) in classic Outlook, restart it, then use Settings > Accounts > Your accounts > Manage > Get Started for the primary account in new Outlook.

Will signing in restore signatures and notifications?

Sign-in reconnects the account but does not guarantee every preference returns. Signatures and notification settings are listed as classic-to-new import examples, so review them after migration.

What if classic Outlook is no longer installed?

If its settings were not already stored through the cloud-settings option, Microsoft’s documented import route may not be possible. Configure new Outlook manually for preferences that do not return.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can Outlook on the web restore the Windows app?

Microsoft says new Outlook changes are reflected in Outlook on the web, so the web version is useful for comparison. It is not documented as a complete backup for every preference.

Should I use Windows Reset when settings are missing?

No. Check the account and migration path first. Reset is general troubleshooting when Repair is unavailable or ineffective, and Microsoft does not say it restores or preserves Outlook settings.

Why is the Get Started option missing?

Confirm that you are in new Outlook, selected the top-most primary account, enabled the classic Outlook cloud-settings option and restarted classic Outlook. Without cloud-stored classic settings, the documented retry may not be available.

Does migration include calendar preferences?

Yes. Microsoft lists meeting hours, early meeting start and end, reminders, time zones, week numbers, date and time format, week start, work-week days and calendar view as examples.

The Bottom Line

Reinstalling new Outlook and signing in can reconnect your mailbox, but they do not guarantee that every preference returns. If you are migrating from classic Outlook, enable Store my Outlook settings in the cloud, restart classic Outlook, then run Settings > Accounts > Your accounts > Manage > Get Started for the primary account. Review the imported mail and calendar options, use Outlook on the web only as a comparison, and reserve Windows Repair or Reset for genuine app problems.
