Yes, a subpanel can constrain a solar design, but it does not automatically impose a fixed cap on every panel on the property. The limit depends on the subpanel’s ratings, its feeder and upstream equipment, and how the solar system is connected. Without those equipment details and a proposed system design, no one can calculate this homeowner’s allowable solar capacity.

Can solar go on both the house and a detached garage?

Potentially. Solar modules can be planned for both roof areas, but roof location alone does not determine how the system connects to the home’s electrical supply. The panels, inverters, conductors, and interconnection point must be designed as parts of one project.

A garage may be supplied from the house through a feeder and subpanel, or it may have a separate service; the headline does not establish which arrangement this property has. That distinction matters because the equipment and wiring between the garage array and the proposed interconnection point are part of the design review. A garage roof does not, by itself, make the array electrically independent from the home or utility connection.

Solar photovoltaic cells produce direct current (DC), which an inverter converts to alternating current (AC). The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection says residential solar systems are typically net metered; the home can draw from the grid when solar production is insufficient. The design therefore needs to account for both roof areas and the electrical connection, not just the number of panels that physically fit. NJ DEP’s solar overview explains the basic system and grid relationship.

Will the subpanel limit how much solar can be installed?

It can, if the proposed connection would exceed a relevant equipment or wiring limit or cannot satisfy the applicable code requirements. A panelboard is only one part of the electrical path: the subpanel rating, bus, breakers, feeder conductors, upstream panel and service equipment, and the proposed point of interconnection all matter.

That is why there is no sound universal percentage or panel-size rule to apply to this house-and-garage project based on the information available. The service rating, panel and subpanel labels, feeder details, solar array’s DC nameplate, inverter AC output, and connection plan have not been provided. A licensed professional must evaluate the actual equipment and design under the applicable code; a subpanel’s mere presence does not establish that a panel or service upgrade is necessary.

New Jersey’s current construction-code listing reports an adoption date of August 17, 2026, and identifies NFPA 70 (2023 NEC) as the electrical subcode, alongside the 2024 New Jersey edition of the International Residential Code for one- and two-family dwellings. The designer and local code official should confirm the current adopted text and its application to the project. See the NJ DCA current construction codes.

NJ DCA’s 2021 New Jersey residential-code document states: “The electrical portion of solar PV systems shall be designed and installed in accordance with NFPA 70.” That document also addresses listed equipment and rooftop structural support, but it is a 2021 edition; it should not be treated as a complete statement of today’s requirements. The state now lists later code editions. NJ DCA’s 2021 IRC New Jersey Edition document provides the quoted sentence.

Why does the point of interconnection matter?

The solar system has to connect to the electrical system at a point and in a manner the equipment and applicable rules permit. A design that uses an existing panelboard connection may face different equipment constraints from one that uses another permitted connection arrangement. Whether an alternative is available depends on the actual installation and current code; it is not something a homeowner can assume from the roof layout.

A 2019 NJ DCA Construction Code Communicator article discussed a supply-side PV connection under the then-referenced 2017 NEC and specified service-conductor, service-equipment, and bonding conditions. It illustrates why the connection point matters, but it is historical guidance—not confirmation that a particular arrangement is allowed under New Jersey’s currently listed 2023 NEC. See NJ DCA’s Spring 2019 PV line-taps article.

There is also a separate question beyond the home’s panels: whether the serving electric distribution company can approve the proposed interconnection. NJBPU has described hosting-capacity constraints on key circuits, which are grid-level conditions, not the same thing as a homeowner’s subpanel rating. The homeowner’s utility and circuit are unknown, so the statewide information does not determine this project’s eligibility. See the NJBPU February 4, 2026 grid-modernization release.

How to compare designs if the existing equipment is a constraint

If the designer identifies a limitation, ask for alternatives based on the actual equipment and code analysis rather than accepting a generic “panel upgrade required” or “no upgrade needed” claim. Quotes should spell out their design assumptions and show how each option affects the project.

  • Whether the design uses the existing panelboard connection or a different connection point that the designer determines is permitted.
  • Whether it requires panel or service work, breaker changes, or other equipment changes.
  • The usable PV capacity after equipment limits and utility interconnection review.
  • Installed cost and schedule, with the included equipment and scope identified.
  • How the arrays and equipment are arranged across both roofs.
  • Whether the design leaves capacity for planned storage, EV charging, or other future loads.

These are comparison questions, not a promise that every option will be allowed or available. The designer should coordinate the electrical design, permitting, roof conditions, and utility process for the specific property.
