Short answer: New Glenn is the more conventional heavy-lift launch vehicle and has already reached orbit, with NASA listing 45 metric tonnes to low Earth orbit (LEO) and more than 13 tonnes to geostationary transfer orbit (GTO). Starship/Super Heavy is a much larger transportation architecture designed for full reuse, in-space propellant operations, lunar missions and Mars transport, but SpaceX does not publish one universal operational payload figure on its current design page. New Glenn has demonstrated a reusable first-stage landing; Starship is still being developed and tested for routine full reuse.

New Glenn and Starship are built for different jobs

Comparing New Glenn with Starship as if they were interchangeable rockets misses the central distinction. Blue Origin’s New Glenn is marketed and contracted primarily as a heavy-lift orbital launch service. It uses a conventional two-stage arrangement, a large payload fairing and a reusable first stage. SpaceX’s Starship system combines the Super Heavy booster and Starship spacecraft into an integrated transportation system intended to move crew and cargo to Earth orbit, deliver propellant, land on the Moon and eventually support Mars missions.

For a customer buying a near-term orbital launch, New Glenn has the clearer conventional product definition and an established orbital-flight record. For missions that need exceptionally large cargo volume, repeated tanker flights, lunar landing capability or eventual planetary transport, Starship has the broader design ambition. The trade-off is that Starship’s full-reuse and high-cadence operating model remains a development objective rather than a routinely demonstrated service.

How much payload can each vehicle carry?

New Glenn’s published orbital figures

NASA’s 2025 material lists New Glenn at 45 metric tonnes to LEO and more than 13 metric tonnes to GTO. These are different target orbits, so they should not be treated as two interchangeable payload ratings. Reaching GTO requires substantially more energy than reaching LEO; consequently, a vehicle’s payload number is lower for GTO than for LEO.

The figures also describe mission capability rather than a promise that every launch will carry exactly those masses. Actual performance depends on trajectory, insertion accuracy, spacecraft dimensions, upper-stage reserves, recovery strategy and other mission constraints. The NASA figures are the appropriate published reference for New Glenn in this comparison, but a customer would still receive a mission-specific performance analysis.

Starship does not have one universal published operational number

SpaceX’s current design description says the Starship payload compartment is larger than any fairing currently in operation or development. That statement establishes a volume advantage, not a single guaranteed payload mass. The cited design page does not publish one universal operational payload figure that can be placed directly beside New Glenn’s 45-tonne LEO number.

Starship missions can also be configured in fundamentally different ways. A vehicle delivering cargo to LEO, launching tanker flights for propellant transfer, sending a payload toward the Moon or landing a crewed lunar vehicle faces different mass and fuel requirements. Until SpaceX publishes a standardized operational payload table for defined destinations and recovery modes, assigning one headline Starship payload number would imply a level of certainty the published material does not provide.

What “more payload” means in practice

If the question is limited to the published LEO figures, New Glenn has the only explicit number in the cited sources: 45 tonnes. It is therefore not possible to calculate a defensible “Starship carries X tonnes more” answer from those sources. Starship’s design points to substantially greater capacity, but the comparison must distinguish between a larger compartment, a planned performance target and a demonstrated operational payload.

For satellite operators, the useful question is not simply which rocket has the larger theoretical capacity. It is whether the spacecraft fits the fairing, whether the destination orbit is supported, whether rideshare deployment needs are met, whether the launch date is credible and whether the provider offers the required mission assurance. New Glenn already publishes route-specific figures; Starship’s eventual customer numbers will depend on its production, recovery and refueling architecture.

Payload volume: New Glenn’s seven-meter fairing versus Starship’s large compartment

New Glenn’s fairing

New Glenn uses a seven-meter fairing. Blue Origin describes that fairing as providing about twice the volume of standard five-meter commercial systems. The extra diameter can matter as much as mass capacity: large spacecraft, multi-satellite stacks, deployers and bulky structures may be volume-limited before they are mass-limited.

A fairing also protects the payload from aerodynamic pressure, acoustic energy and heating during ascent. The seven-meter envelope gives mission planners more room to arrange payloads, but it remains a conventional fairing with the familiar constraints of encapsulation, separation hardware and launch-site processing.

Starship’s stated volume advantage

SpaceX says Starship’s payload compartment is larger than any fairing currently in operation or development. That is a qualitative comparison, but an important one for oversized cargo. A large internal compartment could support payloads that would otherwise need folding mechanisms, on-orbit assembly or a different launch architecture.

Starship’s compartment should not be confused with an automatically available payload bay on every flight. Mission configuration, thermal protection, deployment hardware, propellant requirements and recovery plans all affect how much useful cargo can be carried. The vehicle’s large volume is a design capability; flight-proven customer capacity is a separate question.

Which rocket is more reusable?

New Glenn: reusable first stage

NASA states that New Glenn’s first stage is designed for a minimum of 25 flights. This is a substantial reuse target, but it applies to the first stage rather than the complete launch stack. The upper stage and payload fairing are not described in the cited material as fully reusable components.

New Glenn’s NG-2 mission demonstrated a first-stage landing on the Jacklyn sea platform. That event matters because it moved the program beyond a paper recovery plan: a flight vehicle completed an orbital mission and returned for a controlled landing. One successful landing, however, does not by itself establish a mature refurbishment cycle, a guaranteed turnaround time or a 25-flight fleet record.

Starship: full-system reuse as the target

SpaceX describes Starship and Super Heavy together as a fully reusable transportation system designed to carry crew and cargo to Earth orbit, the Moon, Mars and beyond. The design calls for both the booster and spacecraft to be recovered and flown again. Super Heavy is intended to return to the launch site for rapid reuse, while the spacecraft is intended to perform its own atmospheric return and landing sequence.

This is a more ambitious reuse objective than New Glenn’s reusable-first-stage model because it encompasses the complete launch system. It also introduces more engineering and operational dependencies: both stages must survive their respective flight environments, recovery operations must be repeatable, inspections and refurbishment must be fast enough to support the desired cadence, and launch, landing and ground systems must work as one network.

Demonstrated reuse versus design intent

New Glenn has an orbital flight and a demonstrated reusable first-stage landing. Starship has conducted a development and test program aimed at routine full reuse, but the cited material does not establish routine, operational reuse of both stages. The fairest comparison is therefore:

Which one is cheaper?

Why the published figures are not a head-to-head price list

The cited sources do not provide a common, verified public list price for a standard New Glenn launch and a standard Starship launch. Two figures are available, but they describe different contexts:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Figure What it describes Why it is not directly comparable
$1,500 per kilogram A NASA technical presentation’s 2025 projection for New Glenn competitiveness A projected competitiveness benchmark, not a published customer quote for a particular mission
$100 million per metric ton SpaceX’s stated rate for planned lunar cargo flights no earlier than 2028 A planned lunar-cargo mission context, not a general price per tonne for every Starship launch

Dividing either figure by the other would create a misleading comparison. The New Glenn number is a projection tied to competitiveness assumptions; the Starship number is a provider-stated rate for a specific future lunar-cargo service. Neither establishes what a customer would pay for an identical payload, orbit, schedule, insurance package and recovery configuration.

What could drive eventual cost

Reuse can lower cost when recovered hardware flies often enough to spread development, manufacturing and maintenance expenses over many missions. It does not make a launch free: stages require inspection, transport, propellant, ground support, range services, labor and sometimes replacement of heat-shield or engine components.

New Glenn’s economic model is based on reusing the first stage while operating a conventional heavy-lift service. Starship’s proposed economics depend on reusing both stages and, for some missions, launching additional tankers to transfer propellant in orbit. A lunar mission may therefore involve a chain of launches rather than one vehicle flying once. The number of flights, turnaround time and reliability will determine the real cost per delivered kilogram.

Mission roles and destination differences

New Glenn’s role

New Glenn is positioned as a heavy-lift orbital launch service for commercial and government customers. Its large fairing and published LEO and GTO performance make it relevant to communications satellites, national-security payloads, science spacecraft and other missions that fit a conventional launch profile.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

It also supports Blue Moon-related plans. In NASA’s Artemis architecture, Blue Origin’s Blue Moon lunar lander is associated with an Artemis V mission and is launched by New Glenn. That role makes New Glenn part of a broader lunar campaign, but the rocket itself remains an Earth-to-orbit launch vehicle; the lander performs the lunar-landing function.

Starship’s role

Starship is intended to do more than place a payload in orbit. SpaceX’s stated architecture covers Earth-orbit transport, lunar cargo and crew, propellant delivery and eventual Mars transport. NASA is developing Starship as the Artemis Human Landing System (HLS) vehicle, with SpaceX Starship work assigned to Artemis III and Artemis IV in the cited material.

For a lunar landing, Starship’s architecture requires capabilities beyond launch: a suitable lunar-landing configuration, crew systems where applicable, and the propellant logistics needed to depart Earth, travel to the Moon and return or complete the mission. NASA’s Office of Inspector General has reported schedule challenges in the HLS program, so the Artemis assignment should be read as a development and procurement role, not proof that a routine crewed Starship lunar service is already available.

Can New Glenn or Starship fly humans to the Moon?

New Glenn alone cannot serve as the lunar spacecraft

New Glenn can provide heavy-lift launch capacity, but the cited material does not describe it as a crewed lunar spacecraft or lunar lander. A human Moon mission would require additional vehicles and systems for translunar injection, life support, navigation, lunar orbit operations, landing, ascent and crew return. In the Artemis V concept, New Glenn launches Blue Moon; the lander, not the rocket’s first stage, performs the lunar-landing mission.

Starship is being developed for that role

Starship is the vehicle in this comparison explicitly being developed as a lunar lander. NASA’s HLS program assigns SpaceX Starship work to Artemis III and Artemis IV, while the design description covers crew and cargo transport to the Moon. That gives Starship the more direct human-lunar mission role.

“Being developed for” is not the same as “currently flying astronauts to the Moon.” NASA’s inspector general has identified schedule challenges in the HLS program, and the cited material characterizes Starship as a development and test program for routine full reuse. A crewed lunar flight depends on completing qualification, demonstrations, mission-specific systems and NASA certification milestones.

Which rocket is operational today?

New Glenn’s current status

New Glenn has reached orbit and, on NG-2, landed its reusable first stage on the Jacklyn sea platform. It is therefore the nearer-term conventional launch-service product in this comparison: it has an orbital mission history and a demonstrated recovery milestone. Those facts do not establish a mature high-frequency cadence, but they do distinguish New Glenn from a vehicle that has not yet completed an orbital mission.

Starship’s current status

Starship is being added to NASA’s NLS II launch-service offerings and is under development as the Artemis HLS vehicle. Its program is active and strategically important, but the cited sources describe ongoing development and testing rather than routine commercial operations with fully reusable stages. The practical answer to “which is operational?” is therefore nuanced: New Glenn has flown orbital missions; Starship is progressing through development, qualification and test toward the broader transportation service it is designed to provide.

How the staging and engines differ

New Glenn’s conventional arrangement

New Glenn uses a conventional heavy-lift architecture with a reusable first stage and an upper stage. NASA’s comparison data identify seven BE-4 engines on the first stage. This arrangement separates atmospheric ascent and recovery from upper-stage orbital delivery in a familiar launch-service pattern.

Starship’s integrated booster-and-spacecraft system

Starship/Super Heavy uses 33 Raptor engines on Super Heavy. The booster supplies the initial thrust, while the Starship spacecraft is intended to continue the mission, return to Earth or proceed to another destination. Because the system is designed for full reuse and high flight rates, its operational concept links launch, recovery, refueling and payload delivery much more tightly than a conventional expendable upper-stage mission.

The engine count alone does not determine payload, reliability or cost. It illustrates the different design philosophies: New Glenn is a heavy-lift launcher with a reusable first stage, while Starship is a reusable transportation system whose booster and spacecraft are both central to the mission.

Choosing between them for a real mission

Choose New Glenn when the mission needs a conventional orbital service

  • The payload fits within a seven-meter fairing and has a defined LEO or GTO requirement.
  • You need a launcher with an orbital flight record and a demonstrated first-stage recovery milestone.
  • Your mission does not require the launch vehicle itself to land on the Moon or deliver propellant in orbit.
  • A conventional launch-service contract, schedule and mission-assurance process are more important than an unproven full-reuse architecture.

Choose Starship when the mission depends on the broader architecture

  • The payload is unusually large and benefits from a compartment larger than current or developmental fairings, as SpaceX describes it.
  • The mission requires in-space propellant delivery, repeated tanker flights or a lunar-landing architecture.
  • You are evaluating a future crewed or cargo lunar mission in NASA’s HLS framework.
  • You can accept development-program dependencies while the vehicle, recovery system and operational cadence mature.

Questions a launch buyer should ask either provider

  1. What payload mass and dimensions are guaranteed for the exact destination orbit and trajectory?
  2. Does the quoted performance assume stage recovery, an expendable configuration or additional tanker launches?
  3. What fairing or payload-compartment envelope is available after separation hardware and deployment systems are accounted for?
  4. What flight history, qualification evidence and mission-assurance data apply to the specific vehicle configuration?
  5. Which costs are included: launch service, payload processing, integration, range support, insurance, transportation and schedule protection?
  6. What happens if weather, vehicle readiness or recovery constraints move the launch date?

Bottom line for the main reader questions

  • How much more payload can Starship carry? The cited SpaceX page does not publish one universal operational payload number, so a defensible numeric difference cannot be calculated. New Glenn has the published 45-tonne-to-LEO figure.
  • Is New Glenn fully reusable? No. Its first stage is designed for at least 25 flights and has demonstrated a landing; the cited material does not describe the complete rocket as fully reusable.
  • Which is cheaper? There is no standardized, current public launch price for both. NASA’s $1,500/kg New Glenn projection and SpaceX’s $100 million/tonne planned lunar-cargo rate describe different contexts.
  • Can they fly people to the Moon? New Glenn can launch a lunar lander such as Blue Moon but is not itself the crewed lander. Starship is being developed as NASA’s HLS vehicle for Artemis III and IV, although the program faces schedule challenges.
  • Which is operational? New Glenn has reached orbit and demonstrated a first-stage landing on NG-2. Starship remains in development and testing for routine full reuse and lunar service.

What to watch next

The most informative future milestones will be operational rather than promotional: repeated New Glenn first-stage flights, measured refurbishment intervals, Starship recovery of both stages, reliable payload deployment, validated in-space propellant transfer and completion of NASA’s HLS demonstrations. Those events will turn design targets and projections into comparable service data.

Jeff Bezos summarized the competitive context after New Glenn’s first flight by saying, “There’s room for lots of winners” and describing the moment as the beginning of a phase intended to lower the cost of access to space. That observation fits the evidence: New Glenn and Starship are not simply two versions of the same rocket. They represent competing approaches to expanding orbital capacity, with one nearer to a conventional launch-service model and the other aimed at a reusable Earth-Moon-Mars transportation network.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does New Glenn have a higher published LEO payload than Starship?

New Glenn has a NASA-listed figure of 45 metric tonnes to LEO. The cited SpaceX design page does not publish one universal operational Starship payload number, so the available material cannot establish a numeric winner or calculate how many tonnes separate them.

Is the New Glenn first stage intended to fly only 25 times?

NASA describes a minimum design target of 25 flights. That is a floor for the stated design objective, not a report that the stage has already completed 25 missions.

Does Starship’s larger payload compartment guarantee lower launch cost?

No. Larger volume may enable different payloads, but cost depends on recovery, refurbishment, launch cadence, propellant operations, mission destination and the number of flights required. The cited sources do not provide a standardized launch-price comparison.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why can’t the $1,500/kg and $100 million/tonne figures be compared directly?

The New Glenn figure is a NASA 2025 projection for competitiveness, while the Starship figure is SpaceX’s stated rate for planned lunar cargo flights no earlier than 2028. They refer to different missions and assumptions rather than identical launch services.
