New game IP vs. established franchises is not a choice between “creative” and “safe.” A new IP can deliver a distinctive world, characters and mechanics without inherited rules, but it must earn attention and trust from zero. An established franchise gives players an immediate point of recognition, a tested core appeal and a reachable community, while also carrying expectations that can limit change and produce fatigue when entries feel overused.
For players, the useful question is not which business model always wins. It is whether this particular game makes a clear promise, fulfills it well and uses its IP—new or familiar—to create a worthwhile experience.
What “IP” and “franchise” mean in games
Intellectual property (IP) is the legal term for protectable creations and rights, including characters, settings, stories, names and software. In game-industry conversation, “IP” is often used more narrowly to mean a recognizable property or franchise. A franchise is an IP developed across multiple releases or media; an original game can become a franchise later, but its first release is still a new IP for players.
An established-franchise game may be a numbered sequel, remake, spin-off or a new genre using familiar characters and lore. A new-IP game introduces its own setting, cast and premise, even if it borrows familiar genre conventions. Neither label predicts quality, sales or player satisfaction on its own.

New game IP vs. established franchises at a glance
| Player question | New IP | Established franchise |
|---|---|---|
| How do I understand the appeal? | The game must explain its world, characters and hook clearly enough for a first impression to work. | Recognizable characters, lore or systems can communicate the basic appeal before launch. |
| How much can the creators change? | More room to alter genre, tone, mechanics and structure because there is no prior continuity to protect. | Existing continuity and fan expectations provide foundations but can constrain major departures. |
| What expectations do I bring? | Few inherited promises; expectations form from trailers, demos, reviews and the game itself. | Players may expect particular characters, tone, systems, story rules or multiplayer traditions to remain recognizable. |
| How is the audience found? | Awareness and trust must be built from the ground up. | An existing community can reduce discovery or audience risk, although interest is never guaranteed. |
| What happens over time? | A successful world can support sequels and other media, but its creator may not own every right. | Continuation plans, licensing and corporate agreements determine who controls future use. |
| Primary uncertainty | Will enough players understand the promise and give an unknown property a chance? | Can the new entry satisfy existing fans while offering a meaningful reason to return? |
What players can gain from a new IP
A world that is not carrying continuity debt
New IP gives a team the ability to define its setting, characters and rules in one direction. Players can encounter a premise without needing to know decades of backstory or remember which earlier release established a character’s history. That can make experimentation easier: a studio can change the structure of progression, the tone of the story or the relationship between single-player and multiplayer without explaining why a long-running formula has changed.
Room for a fresh creative bet
A new property can test an unusual combination of genre, setting and mechanics. It may also let a team respond to ideas that do not fit an existing brand. Hermen Hulst, then head of PlayStation Studios, called new IP “the lifeblood of gaming” in a 2021 PlayStation Blog interview. The statement describes why publishers continue to invest in new worlds: they can refresh a company’s creative portfolio instead of only extending known series.
A potential long-term asset
If players adopt the world, the original game can become the foundation for sequels, expansions, adaptations or merchandise. WIPO notes that developers may favor original IP for artistic reasons and to strengthen bargaining power with publishers. That is an opportunity, not a guarantee of ownership. A developer may create a game while a publisher, platform holder or another partner controls some or all of the underlying rights; the contracts decide.

What players risk with a new IP
Discovery is harder
An unknown title has to earn attention before anyone has experienced its characters or systems. Marketing can explain the premise, but it cannot remove the basic uncertainty of buying into an unfamiliar world. WIPO describes existing-IP projects as potentially lower-risk ventures because an established fan base may be more willing to spend on a new release. “Lower risk” here means a head start in discovery and audience reach, not a promise that the game will be good or profitable.

The promise may be difficult to read
A new game has to communicate its value without relying on a familiar name. If trailers emphasize spectacle while the finished game centers on a different loop, players may struggle to understand what they are buying. Reviews, demos and transparent explanations of the core systems therefore matter more for an unknown property than for a sequel whose basic identity is already familiar.
Future support is less predictable
Players cannot assume that a new IP will receive sequels, expansions or years of online support. Those decisions depend on sales, production capacity, rights agreements and the publisher’s plans. The absence of a follow-up is not proof that the first game failed creatively; it is a normal consequence of the investment and uncertainty involved in launching a property.
What players can gain from an established franchise
Immediate recognition and a known core appeal
Familiar characters, worlds or systems lower the effort required to decide whether a game is relevant to you. Returning players may understand the basic controls, tone or competitive identity before seeing a full review. A franchise can also provide a social entry point: friends who already play the series can explain its conventions and make a new release easier to join.

A long-running series can refine controls, accessibility, online infrastructure and presentation over multiple releases. Continuity gives the team a foundation to improve rather than invent every element at once. Bandai Namco’s account of Tekken describes the series adapting from arcades to home consoles while preserving its central appeal of bringing players and spectators together. The company says that transition added character narratives, a story mode and mini-games, showing how a franchise can change around its core rather than simply repeat an old format.

A community that can make the game richer
Established communities can support competitive play, guides, fan events and feedback loops. Bandai Namco describes fan feedback as an input to Tekken development and marketing. That relationship can help a team identify which elements are essential and where a new release can evolve, although a company account of one series should not be treated as a universal result.
What players risk with an established franchise
Expectation load
Players may expect particular characters, story rules, camera behavior, progression systems or multiplayer modes. A departure can be exciting when it serves the game, but it can also be judged against an imagined version of the series. The team must decide which elements are identity-bearing and which are habits that can change.
Franchise fatigue
WIPO warns that overusing sequels and spin-offs can create franchise fatigue. This is a risk, not an inevitable outcome. A sequel can feel necessary when it introduces a meaningful new structure, improves a weak system or reaches a new audience; it can feel disposable when its changes are cosmetic and its release cadence leaves little time for ideas to mature.
Recognition can hide uncertainty
A familiar name may make a game easier to notice, but it does not establish its execution. A sequel can have technical problems, an unfocused campaign or a monetization model that players dislike. Recognition should be treated as a reason to investigate, not as evidence that the new entry deserves an automatic purchase.

Why the best entries mix novelty with familiarity
WIPO describes the industry challenge as balancing consumers’ desire for novelty with their desire for some familiarity. For a franchise, that may mean preserving its central appeal while changing the platform, structure or supporting modes. For a new IP, it means making the player promise legible even when the world is unfamiliar. “Familiar” does not have to mean every old feature, and “new” does not have to mean that every convention is discarded.
Nadia Thorne, CEO and Producer at Black Salt Games, summarized the creative trade-off in Unity’s 2025 Gaming Report: “It’s a balance between what the creative team has left to give and what our players want.” She also said, “Expanding an IP often makes financial sense and is great for fans who want more of what they already love.” Her qualification is important: a known property can serve players when the expansion has a meaningful purpose.
Thorne added that “creating something new can reinspire the team, open up opportunities for even bigger success, and bring fresh ideas back to the original IP…” Her final test was whether the result is meaningful “for both our players and ourselves.” These are principles for judging a project, not evidence that one route produces better outcomes in every genre.
What current industry numbers actually show
The available figures describe business strategies and historical examples. They do not establish that players prefer franchises or that new IP sells better after controlling for genre, budget, quality, platform, timing and marketing.

Case study: what Tekken shows about a franchise
Bandai Namco’s 2024 integrated report presents Tekken as a series that moved from arcades to home consoles while retaining its central appeal of bringing players and spectators together. The company describes adding character narratives, a story mode and mini-games during that shift, and using fan feedback in development and marketing. The example illustrates a practical franchise strategy: preserve the reason people gather around the series, then redesign surrounding features for new platforms and audiences.
For Tekken 8, released in January 2024, Bandai Namco reported one million copies shipped worldwide on launch day and more than two million during the following month. The company attributed part of the performance to a simultaneous global home-console release. Those are company-reported results and cannot be used to claim that franchise status alone caused the sales. Ongoing esports, licensing and other extensions may also affect a series’ reach.
How to judge a game without overvaluing its label
- Identify the actual promise. Read the store description, watch representative gameplay and name the core loop in one sentence. For a new IP, check whether the premise is understandable without marketing language. For a franchise, identify what is genuinely new beyond the returning name.
- Separate inherited appeal from present execution. Ask which characters, systems or social features made the older games valuable, then look for evidence that this release delivers them. Recognition is a starting point, not a quality rating.
- Check the change being attempted. A new genre, control scheme, story structure or platform can be worthwhile when it serves the game’s purpose. In a franchise, determine whether the change is deliberate or merely cosmetic. In a new IP, see whether the novelty creates a coherent experience rather than a pile of unrelated ideas.
- Inspect practical evidence. Reviews and hands-on impressions can reveal performance, accessibility, progression and multiplayer conditions that a brand name cannot. For an online game, verify the supported platforms and service plans before committing time or money.
- Price the uncertainty honestly. Treat an unknown property as a discovery purchase and a sequel as an expectation purchase. Neither deserves an automatic discount or premium solely because of its category.
- Consider the long-term relationship. If you want expansions, competitive support or sequels, look for the developer’s stated plans and the rights structure where it is public. Do not assume that the studio that made the game controls the IP.
What the evidence cannot settle
No controlled study in the cited material compares player satisfaction, retention or commercial performance for original-IP games and franchise entries while holding genre, production budget, quality, platform, release timing and marketing constant. The WIPO reports explain uncertainty and investment risk; Unity reports what surveyed developers say about growth strategies; Bandai Namco provides a company account of one franchise; and the PlayStation interview is a historical statement about portfolio planning. These sources should be read as context, not as a formula for predicting your experience.
Development itself requires substantial upfront investment, and game popularity remains difficult to forecast. A recognizable property can reduce the cost of discovery while increasing the cost of disappointing expectations. A new IP can spend more effort earning attention while gaining freedom to establish a durable world. The player-facing result still depends on the particular team, design, production quality and launch conditions.
