Astronomers have found converging optical and X-ray evidence for a dual active galactic nucleus (AGN) in the lensed system MG B2016+112, showing two accreting supermassive black holes in a galaxy merger when the universe was much younger. The result is based on 2026 preprints and is described by their authors as the tightest confirmed high-redshift AGN pair yet.
What was found in MG B2016+112
MG B2016+112 is a radio-loud background source at redshift z = 3.273. A foreground galaxy acts as a gravitational lens, splitting the background object into three resolved images labelled A, B and C. Lensing normally produces multiple views of the same source, so the central question was whether the apparent components represented one complicated active black hole or more than one independently illuminated region.
New analyses of archival Very Large Telescope/MUSE spectra and a separate Chandra observation now support the latter explanation. The inferred projected distance between the two active sources is 175 parsecs, approximately 570 light-years. Because this is a projected separation, the true three-dimensional distance could be larger.
Why the optical spectra point to two ionizing sources
The MUSE data contain Lyα, C IV, N V, He II and C III] emission. Lyα, C IV and N V are affected by saturated absorption, making them less reliable for separating the components. The diagnostic He II-to-C III] ratios, however, agree between images A and B but differ significantly in image C.

If A, B and C were simply lensed views of one ionizing source, their line-ratio patterns would be expected to remain consistent after allowing for lensing and observational effects. The authors interpret the distinct pattern in C as evidence that it is illuminated by a second ionizing source. This is a spectroscopic indication of a dual AGN, not merely two bright knots in the same jet.
How the independent X-ray test strengthens the case
A separate study used a new 175-kilosecond Chandra exposure and fitted the X-ray spectra of the components individually. For the highly magnified source inside the lens caustic, the analysis finds intrinsic absorption at the source redshift of NH > 4 × 1022 cm−2 at 3-sigma confidence. That level of absorbing gas identifies the component as an obscured AGN.

The system also contains a previously known type-II AGN outside the caustic. Finding separate X-ray spectra for an obscured, highly magnified component and that established type-II source makes it harder to explain the observations as one complex jet whose structure has been exaggerated by lensing. The optical and X-ray studies therefore test the dual-AGN interpretation with different physical diagnostics.

Separation, black-hole masses and inferred feeding
The MUSE study fits the broad C IV emission to set lower limits on the black-hole masses. After correcting for strong-lensing magnification, it also derives limits on each source’s Eddington ratio—the accretion luminosity relative to the theoretical balance at which radiation pressure would halt inflow.

| Image/component | Black-hole mass lower limit | Eddington-ratio limit |
|---|---|---|
| A | At least 2.0 × 107 solar masses | Approximately ≤0.47 |
| B | At least 2.3 × 107 solar masses | Approximately ≤0.51 |
| C | At least 1.5 × 107 solar masses | Approximately ≤0.04 |
These are model-dependent limits, not precise measurements of the final black-hole masses or permanently fixed feeding rates. The similar mass floors for A, B and C are compatible with a major merger, but they do not by themselves prove the galaxies have equal masses or that the host is a textbook major merger.
Why the feeding contrast is important
The A/B components have Eddington-ratio limits near one-half, while the estimate for C is near four percent. That contrast could indicate strongly unequal accretion in a close pair. The C value is especially sensitive to the adopted gravitational-lens magnification, so it should be treated as a model-sensitive constraint rather than a direct long-term measurement of how fast that black hole is growing.

Why a compact dual AGN matters for galaxy evolution
When galaxies merge, their central black holes can lose orbital energy, move closer together and experience episodes of enhanced gas inflow. Dual AGN provide a way to observe that process before the black holes become a single remnant. A system at z = 3.273 probes an early stage of supermassive-black-hole assembly, when both black holes are already active despite their small separation.

The two 2026 preprints use strong language about the record: the MUSE authors call it “the most compact confirmed dual AGN at z > 1,” while the Chandra authors describe it as “the tightest separation confirmed AGN pair at high redshift.” Those statements refer to confirmed systems in the authors’ comparison and are not a measurement of the overall frequency of such pairs.

What remains uncertain
The observations establish a compelling dual-AGN case, but several physical quantities still depend on assumptions about the foreground lens and the unresolved host galaxies.
- The 175-parsec figure is a projected separation; lens reconstruction is required to infer the geometry more fully.
- The C IV-based masses are lower limits, and the Eddington-ratio values change with the magnification adopted for each image.
- Similar mass limits are consistent with a major merger but do not determine the host-galaxy mass ratio, gas supply or merger stage.
- The MUSE paper was submitted to arXiv on 25 September 2026 with an ApJL submission noted and comments invited. The Chandra paper was submitted on 29 September 2026. Both results therefore remain preprint findings rather than settled peer-reviewed population statistics.
What observations come next
The authors call for deep, spatially resolved near-infrared spectroscopy. Such data could reduce reliance on the broad C IV fits, improve the black-hole mass estimates and reveal the stellar and gaseous conditions of the host system. Wider surveys may uncover more examples: Euclid, the Square Kilometre Array, the Vera C. Rubin Observatory and the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope are identified as useful for finding compact systems and tracing supermassive-black-hole evolution, including possible precursors of future gravitational-wave sources.
Taken together, the matched optical diagnostics and independently modelled X-ray spectra make MG B2016+112 a strong candidate for two actively feeding black holes separated by only a few hundred parsecs. The detection is robust enough to motivate follow-up, while the exact masses, accretion rates and merger history still require better lens models and resolved infrared observations.
