A “new domain name” can mean a name someone has just registered under an existing ending, such as a name ending in .com, or a new top-level domain (gTLD), such as an entirely new ending. These are different things: registering a name uses an existing domain ending; creating a new gTLD involves applying to operate the ending itself through ICANN’s formal process.

What is a domain name?

A domain name is a human-readable sequence of characters used in place of an IP address when people access internet services. In a name such as example.com, example is the name registered beneath the ending .com.

Because “new domain name” is not a precise technical term, context matters. It may refer to a recently registered name beneath an existing ending, or to a newly introduced top-level ending.

How is a new domain registration different from a new gTLD?

The distinction is which part of the domain is new and who is pursuing it:

Route What is new Who pursues it Process
Ordinary domain registration A name beneath an existing ending, such as a name under .com A registrant Registering the name
New gTLD The top-level ending itself An applicant entity A formal ICANN application round

So, registering a new name ending in an established gTLD does not create a new gTLD. It adds a name beneath an ending that already exists.

What does “new gTLD” mean?

A new generic top-level domain (gTLD) is a new generic ending introduced through ICANN’s New gTLD Program. ICANN describes the 2026 Round as “an ICANN initiative to enable the expansion of the Internet’s Domain Name System (DNS) through the introduction of new top-level domains.”

Applying for a new gTLD is not the same as registering a website address for personal or business use. An applicant entity submits an application during a defined submission period; an application round is the sequence of stages in which applications from that period are processed.

What is the status of ICANN’s 2026 application round?

ICANN’s 2026 application window ran from 30 April through 12 August 2026. It closed on 12 August 2026 at 23:59 UTC. In its announcement on 13 August 2026, ICANN reported that it had received more than 1,600 applications. The application window is closed; this figure is the number ICANN reported for submissions, not a count of approvals.

What does the gTLD application process involve?

ICANN’s applicant preparation materials identify several application types and process components. They concern applying to introduce or operate a top-level ending, not registering an individual domain name.

Application types

  • General
  • Community
  • Geographic-name
  • Reserved-name

Agreement and platform

The base Registry Agreement describes the contractual rights and obligations for successful applicants. TAMS is the centralized platform used by applicants, ICANN, and evaluation panels to manage stages of the application process.

Which meaning applies to your situation?

  • If you want a new web address using an existing ending, you mean ordinary domain registration.
  • If you mean introducing a new ending at the top level of the DNS, you mean a new gTLD and an ICANN application process.

These routes are distinct; the 2026 gTLD application window has closed. The available information here does not establish registrar prices, application outcomes, or the timing of a future ICANN application round.
