The new Disney game is an unnamed shooter reportedly being developed by Epic Games around Marvel and Star Wars. It was previously expected in March 2027 but has reportedly been delayed without a replacement date, as Epic shifts the project toward AI-generated code and art. No official title, platforms, final design or launch date has been announced.
What is the new Disney game Epic is making?
Tom’s Hardware reported on October 13, 2026, citing Bloomberg, that Epic is developing an unnamed shooter using Disney’s Marvel and Star Wars properties. The report does not identify the game’s title, platforms, perspective, monetization model, playable characters or story. There is no public finished build to evaluate.
The project is significant because it combines two of Disney’s most recognizable fictional universes with Epic’s technology and production strategy. It is also being discussed as part of a broader Disney–Epic plan rather than as an isolated licensed release.
Is the Disney Marvel and Star Wars game delayed?
Yes, according to the October 13, 2026 report. The game was previously expected to arrive in March 2027, but staff were reportedly told that the schedule had moved. Epic and Disney have not announced a revised release date.

The delay may indicate schedule pressure, but the available reporting does not establish that an AI transition caused it. Any explanation beyond the reported change in plans would be speculation.
Why is Epic using AI to make the Disney game?
Epic founder Tim Sweeney said the company is undertaking “a huge pivot” to move developers around for “maximum AI acceleration.” He said the aim is not to make the same work with fewer people, but to let teams build “MORE and BETTER stuff” and extend the benefits to projects using Unreal.
In the reporting about the Disney shooter, staff were reportedly told there would be “no more handwritten code” and that game art would be “generated with full AI workflows.” Those are reported internal directions, not independently verified characteristics of a shipped game. They also do not establish how much human review, editing or original asset creation the final product will contain.

What an AI-first workflow could change
- Code production: Generative systems could create prototypes, boilerplate and tools quickly, while engineers remain responsible for integration, testing, security and performance.
- Art production: Generated concepts and assets could increase iteration speed, but a commercial game still needs consistent visual direction, animation, rigging, lighting, optimization and approval for licensed characters.
- Testing: Automated systems may explore more gameplay states, yet human testers are still needed to judge feel, accessibility, balance, bugs and whether a scene fits Marvel or Star Wars canon.
- Team structure: Sweeney’s statement describes redeployment and acceleration, not a published staffing plan. The project’s actual headcount and responsibilities are unknown.

Why this project is a gamble for Disney and Epic
Production risk on a high-profile license
An AI-first workflow is reportedly being applied before the public has seen a finished build. Marvel and Star Wars require more than functional mechanics: character likenesses, stories, terminology, visual continuity and age-appropriate presentation all need approval. A delay is evidence of schedule movement, not proof that the new workflow failed, but it makes delivery risk visible.
Creative, quality and safety risk
Disney says it wants original games designed for their medium and durable social experiences. Generated material must therefore be coherent across a large world, safe for a broad audience and distinctive enough to avoid feeling like a collage of familiar franchise references. Human direction, review and accountability remain necessary even if generation is automated.

Strategic concentration
Disney’s August 13, 2026 strategy article described games as an entry point into Disney stories and reported estimated consumer spending of $3.5 billion annually for the previous four years. Disney said spending crossed $4 billion in its latest fiscal year. The company also described its Epic relationship as a way to build a persistent entertainment universe combining gaming, storytelling and creator expression.

If a major standalone project performs poorly, the result could affect confidence in the larger Disney–Epic plan, even though one game would not determine the value of every part of the relationship.
A measurement problem
There is no public release, reviewable build or replacement date. Sweeney’s promise to produce “MORE and BETTER stuff” is an objective, not a demonstrated result. The meaningful test will come only when players can judge stability, originality, content cadence and how the game handles its licensed worlds.

Is this Disney game part of the Fortnite universe?
Disney and Epic have discussed a connected, persistent entertainment universe, and Disney has highlighted Fortnite activities such as the Smugglers Gambit activation. Those facts show strategic cooperation, but they do not confirm that the unnamed Marvel–Star Wars shooter is a Fortnite mode, a Fortnite product or directly compatible with Fortnite accounts and content.
Until Disney or Epic specifies the relationship, treat “part of the Fortnite universe” as an unconfirmed assumption. The game could share technology, characters or social ambitions without being a Fortnite experience.

Where this project fits in Disney’s current games slate
Disney’s August 16 D23 announcement also highlighted Kingdom Hearts IV, the Fortnite Smugglers Gambit activation and Marvel’s Wolverine. Kingdom Hearts IV is described as launching in late 2027, and the Kingdom Hearts franchise has sold more than 39 million units worldwide. Those are separate projects and should not be used as evidence that the Epic shooter has a date or commercial forecast.

Frontier Developments separately announced on September 3, 2026, a fully funded Disney game built around its creative-management-simulation expertise. Frontier did not disclose a title or release date. Its announcement shows that Disney is pursuing multiple game formats and partners, rather than relying only on the Epic shooter.
What to watch before judging the game
- A revised date: A specific window would show whether the reported delay has been resolved.
- Platforms and business model: These determine technical limits, audience size and how content will be sold.
- Gameplay evidence: A trailer or hands-on demonstration should reveal whether the shooter has a clear identity beyond its licenses.
- Human accountability: Disney and Epic should explain review, credit, safety and rights-management practices for generated work.
- Post-launch support: A persistent universe requires reliable updates, moderation and community tools, not only a successful launch.
- Player response: Long-term retention, creator participation and trust will matter more than novelty surrounding the AI label.
For now, the defensible conclusion is narrow: Epic is reportedly making an unnamed Marvel–Star Wars shooter for Disney, its March 2027 target has slipped, and an ambitious AI-production shift is part of the story. Whether that shift becomes a breakthrough or a liability will depend on the finished game, which remains unseen.
