The shoe described by the title is the New Balance FuelCell Rebel v5; New Balance and the independent reviews cited here do not call it the “SuperComp Rebel.” It is a neutral, unplated daily trainer designed for everyday and quick runs, with a soft, flexible ride. Reviews disagree about how lively it feels, so expect a comfortable lightweight trainer—not a guaranteed racer-like pop.
What shoe is the FuelCell Rebel v5?
“SuperComp Rebel” combines names that the available product information does not use for this model. New Balance identifies it as the FuelCell Rebel v5. Keep that distinction in mind when searching or shopping: the specifications below are for the Rebel v5, not a SuperComp shoe.
New Balance positions the v5 as a neutral running shoe for everyday running and quick runs. Its midsole uses a PEBA/EVA FuelCell blend. The company describes the design as having more foam than its predecessor, a wider and higher midsole geometry, more forefoot outsole rubber, and a redesigned heel and tongue. Those are manufacturer descriptions, not independent proof of a faster or more durable ride.

Independent measurements are not identical to the headline specifications. RTINGS reports 227.3 g (8.02 oz), a 36.2 mm heel stack, a 7.0 mm measured drop, and no plate under its testing protocol. Those are RTINGS measurements, not replacements for New Balance’s listed figures.

How does the ride feel?
The common ground in the reviews is a soft, flexible shoe. RunRepeat describes a soft ride, while RTINGS calls it mellow and forgiving and says it does not return much bounce. Running Shoes Guru’s reviewer found it too flexible and not snappy enough for some faster sessions. Tom’s Guide, by contrast, found it comfortable and versatile over the reviewer’s 40-mile test.
That variation matters more than a blanket “fast” or “slow” label. The Rebel v5 may suit runners who want a light-feeling, cushioned daily trainer that can handle some quicker running. If a firm, highly propulsive ride is your priority for hard workouts, the available reviews do not establish that this shoe will deliver it. RTINGS reports that its tested shoe has no plate.

Fit and sizing
New Balance describes the fit as snug and advises sizing up if you are between sizes. The US listing includes standard and wide width options. Start with your usual New Balance size, but treat it as a starting point rather than a fit guarantee: Tom’s Guide’s reviewer found a comfortable fit in their usual size and a fairly wide toe box, while fit can vary by foot shape.

RunRepeat’s 2025 review, updated in 2026, assigned its own test results of 1/5 for toe-box durability and 4/5 for heel-padding durability. These scores describe its testing, not a prediction of when an individual pair will wear out.

Running Shoes Guru’s reviewer reported visible wear at the outer lateral heel after 120 km of personal use. That is one reviewer’s observation, not a controlled estimate for every runner, surface, or gait. If you buy the shoe, check the upper and outsole periodically rather than treating either finding as a guaranteed failure point.
