Equip the Grappling Hook when your raid plan depends on flexible vertical movement—reaching roofs, swinging between surfaces, or descending from height. Equip the Snap Hook when you need a quick, direct burst to close distance or cross a location. The Grappling Hook is not established as a universal replacement for the Snap Hook. Embark Games intentionally positioned the two gadgets for different jobs, and the best choice depends on your route, available anchor points, and willingness to spend the Snap Hook’s more limited resources.
What changed in Frozen Trail 2.0
Embark’s official 2.0 Frozen Trail Update, last updated October 8, 2026, introduced the Grappling Hook as one of the update’s new items. The design reason matters more than the item’s novelty: Embark said the new gadget prompted a rethink of personal-mobility items so they would no longer sit on a simple linear upgrade path. In other words, the Grappling Hook and Snap Hook are intended to solve different movement problems rather than compete as higher- and lower-tier versions of the same tool.
The same update changed the Snap Hook’s balance. Its maximum range is now 18 m instead of 20 m, each use consumes 4% durability instead of 2%, and its power cost is 60 instead of 50. Embark described the goal as making the Snap Hook a more committed burst-mobility option: a fast way to close distance or traverse a location, but not something to fire repeatedly without planning.
“With these changes, we aim to make the Snap Hook better fit its role as being a burst mobility gadget; something that is used to quickly close distance or traverse a location, but with more commitment when doing so.”

At-a-glance role comparison
| Gadget | Primary movement job | What the available evidence shows | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Grappling Hook | Flexible vertical movement | In an October 7 preview, PC Gamer reported climbing most buildings, swinging between rooftops, descending from tall buildings, and attaching to a broad range of surfaces. | It depends on usable anchor points and can misbehave around ledges, ropes, or some large ARC. |
| Snap Hook | Quick, direct burst movement | Embark frames it as a tool for rapidly closing distance or traversing a location. | Its revised range, durability use, and power cost make each activation more consequential. |
What the Grappling Hook can do
Practical Grappling Hook information currently comes from Morgan Park’s PC Gamer preview published October 7, 2026. That is an attributed preview-session observation, not a controlled benchmark or a complete technical specification. Within that limitation, the gadget appears to offer the broadest set of movement routes.
Reach roofs and climb through vertical spaces
The preview reported that the Grappling Hook could climb most buildings. For a raid route, that means a wall or facade may become an entry point instead of an obstacle that forces you through a doorway or around a block. The value is not merely speed: gaining height can change which surfaces, exits, and lines of travel are available to you.
“Most buildings” should not be read as every structure or every surface. The report did not provide a building-by-building success rate, a list of guaranteed anchor materials, or a map-wide test. Treat the claim as practical guidance for looking for vertical options, not as a promise that any visible ledge will accept the hook.

Swing between rooftops and other surfaces
PC Gamer also described swinging between rooftops. Swinging introduces route geometry that a straight burst cannot: you can leave one elevated surface, carry momentum through open space, and arrive at another surface without taking the ground-level route. This is especially relevant when your intended path has multiple anchor points rather than one obvious destination.
The same flexibility creates more room for execution errors. A route that looks connected on the map may not provide a valid attachment point at the exact angle or distance you need. Plan the next anchor before committing to the current swing, and leave yourself a fallback route when the destination is uncertain.
Descend from tall buildings
The preview said the Grappling Hook could be used to descend from tall buildings. That makes it useful for leaving height as well as gaining it. A player who reaches a roof does not necessarily have to retrace the ascent or take a predictable stairwell; the hook can turn the building’s exterior into a potential exit.

Do not convert this observation into an assumption about damage immunity, landing safety, or guaranteed recovery from every fall. The cited preview discussed descending, but it did not publish a controlled test of fall damage, impact behavior, or every possible landing surface.
Redeploy the tether in midair
According to the preview, players could redeploy the Grappling Hook while airborne without a cooldown or use limit, enabling chained swings. This is the feature that most clearly separates its handling from a single-purpose traversal burst: a successful sequence can link several attachment points rather than ending after one pull.
Because this behavior was observed in a preview session, it should be treated as reported handling rather than a guaranteed final balance specification. The source did not provide a measured maximum chain length, a complete list of restrictions, or resource-consumption figures for repeated redeployments.
How the Snap Hook now fits a loadout
The Snap Hook’s identity is clearer after the Frozen Trail 2.0 changes. Embark describes it as burst mobility, intended to quickly close distance or traverse a location. That favors a player who already knows the immediate destination and wants to get there quickly, rather than someone improvising a multi-anchor route through vertical terrain.
Range and resource changes
| Snap Hook attribute | Before the update | After the update | What it means in practice |
|---|---|---|---|
| Range | 20 m | 18 m | The target must be two metres closer than before, so borderline engagements may no longer be valid. |
| Durability consumed per use | 2% | 4% | Each activation uses twice the previous durability percentage. |
| Power cost | 50 | 60 | Each activation draws 10 more power than before. |
These figures are the official balance values reported by Embark for the update. They describe the Snap Hook; the available Grappling Hook preview did not establish equivalent durability or power costs, so there is no justified apples-to-apples resource ranking.

Why “more commitment” matters
Embark’s wording about commitment is a usage signal. A Snap Hook activation should be tied to a meaningful movement decision—closing a gap, crossing a location, or taking a known escape line—rather than treated as an automatic first press whenever movement feels slightly inconvenient. The update notes also describe the gadget as not supporting immediate back-to-back use in the way players might expect from an unrestrained mobility tool.

The practical question is therefore not “Which hook travels farther?” The revised Snap Hook has a stated 18 m range, while the Grappling Hook’s preview description emphasizes route flexibility rather than a single comparable range figure. Ask instead whether your next move benefits from speed along a direct line or from the ability to change direction, gain height, and attach again.
Grappling Hook versus Snap Hook: the meaningful differences
| Decision factor | Grappling Hook | Snap Hook |
|---|---|---|
| Movement goal | Climb, swing, reposition vertically, or descend. | Close distance or traverse a location in a quick burst. |
| Route geometry | Creates several possible paths when suitable anchor points are available. | Favors a direct path to a known destination. |
| Control demand | Requires choosing anchors and managing tether behavior through a sequence. | Requires judging whether one committed burst is worth the activation. |
| Repeat use | The preview reported midair redeployment without a cooldown or use limit; official resource figures were not stated in the available notes. | Embark increased durability consumption and power cost and positioned it as a less casually repeatable burst. |
| Known failure concerns | Preview observations included rope tangles, failed ledge grabs, and difficulty attaching to some large ARC. | The shorter range can invalidate a previously reliable 20 m approach; the update also makes each use more expensive. |
| Best fit for player intent | Exploration of vertical routes and flexible repositioning. | Fast execution of a planned gap-closing or traversal move. |
When you should equip the Grappling Hook
Your route depends on height
Choose the Grappling Hook when reaching a roof, balcony, or elevated surface is central to the plan. Its reported ability to climb buildings and swing between rooftops gives you more ways to approach vertical terrain than a gadget designed around one quick burst. This is a route-planning advantage, not a promise that every building will be climbable.
You expect to change direction during movement
The Grappling Hook is the more logical choice when the destination may change after you leave the ground. Midair redeployment, as reported in the preview, allows a sequence of attachments and therefore supports adaptation: one anchor can lead to another instead of forcing you to commit to a single endpoint.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsYou need an exterior way down
If the raid plan includes taking a tall structure and leaving without returning through the same interior path, the reported descent capability is a strong reason to equip the Grappling Hook. It gives the ascent and the exit the same general toolset.
You can tolerate mechanical uncertainty
Use it when you are prepared to account for imperfect grabs and tether behavior. The preview specifically mentioned possible rope tangles and failed ledge grabs. Players who prefer a predictable, single-action movement solution may find those edge cases more disruptive than players who value extra route options.
When you should equip the Snap Hook
You have a clear destination within its range
The Snap Hook is a better fit when you can identify the point you want to reach and it falls within the revised 18 m range. Its purpose is direct movement, so it does not need the multi-anchor geometry that makes the Grappling Hook attractive.

You need to close distance immediately
Embark explicitly describes the Snap Hook as a way to close distance. If the important decision is reaching a nearby position quickly rather than finding a roofline or planning a chained swing, the Snap Hook’s focused role matches that intent.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →You are crossing a location, not solving a vertical puzzle
For a known traversal across an area, a direct burst may be easier to execute than selecting and correcting through several anchors. The trade-off is that the updated durability and power costs make an unnecessary activation more expensive, so reserve it for movement that materially improves your position.
You prefer a smaller decision surface
The Snap Hook asks a narrower question: is this burst worth the cost and is the target close enough? The Grappling Hook asks additional questions about attachment surfaces, swing direction, follow-up anchors, and recovery from a failed grab. Equip the Snap Hook when that simplicity is more valuable than route flexibility.
A practical decision process before a raid
- Define the movement objective. Write down the first movement problem your loadout must solve: gaining a roof, descending safely from height, crossing a known gap, or closing distance to a position. If the objective is vertical and multi-stage, start with the Grappling Hook; if it is a single direct burst, start with the Snap Hook.
- Inspect the route for anchors and distance. For the Grappling Hook, identify likely attachment surfaces and at least one alternative if the first ledge fails. For the Snap Hook, verify that the intended destination is inside the revised 18 m range rather than relying on an old 20 m expectation.
- Budget the Snap Hook activation. Each use now consumes 4% durability and 60 power. Treat those as part of the route’s cost, especially if the movement is optional rather than necessary.
- Choose your tolerance for correction. A chained Grappling Hook route can offer more options but also exposes you to tangles and failed grabs reported in the preview. A Snap Hook activation is more committed; if the target or timing is wrong, the resources have still been spent.
- Reassess after the first movement. If the raid has moved from vertical exploration to a short, urgent crossing, the gadget that matched the opening plan may no longer match the next decision. Do not assume one hook is superior for every phase of a raid.
How to test the choice without fooling yourself
No controlled comparative performance study, map-by-map ranking, crafting specification, or exhaustive Grappling Hook cost table is established by the available sources. If you want a personal preference rather than a universal claim, evaluate the gadgets against the situations you actually encounter.
Record route success, not just speed
For each attempted movement, note whether you reached the intended surface, whether you had to take a fallback route, and whether the movement exposed you to an avoidable hazard. A hook that produces a fast arrival but frequently fails the chosen ledge may be less useful to your playstyle than one that is slower but repeatable.
Separate geometry failures from execution failures
When a Grappling Hook attempt fails, distinguish an unavailable or invalid surface from a missed input or poor angle. The preview’s mention of failed ledge grabs and tangles means not every failure proves the route was impossible. Likewise, a Snap Hook that cannot reach a target may be outside the stated range rather than evidence that the gadget malfunctioned.

Track resource consequences
For the Snap Hook, record how often the 4% durability and 60-power activation prevented a later movement you wanted. The cited material does not provide equivalent Grappling Hook resource numbers, so do not invent a percentage comparison. Instead, evaluate whether the Grappling Hook’s observed handling gives you enough route value to justify choosing it.
Test large-ARC interactions cautiously
PC Gamer reported difficulty using the Grappling Hook on some large ARC, but the preview did not identify every affected enemy or establish a universal rule. Treat those encounters as a separate test category and avoid assuming that success against buildings transfers to every ARC target.
Do not confuse the Dockmaster’s Detector with a mobility gadget
The Dockmaster’s Detector belongs to a different category. PC Gamer described it as a metal-detector-like quick-slot item for locating buried valuables during the Riven Tide Beachcombing condition. It is map-condition utility, not an alternative to either hook. If your decision is specifically about movement, comparing the Detector with the Grappling Hook or Snap Hook mixes unrelated jobs.

The official Frozen Trail 2.0 notes are the controlling source for the Grappling Hook’s introduction and the Snap Hook’s balance changes. The practical Grappling Hook behavior described here comes from a PC Gamer preview session on October 7, 2026. That preview explicitly said the Tether Launcher and Yank Grenade were not thoroughly tested, so confident comparative claims about those items would go beyond the available evidence.
ARC Raiders supports cross-platform play on PC, PlayStation, and Xbox, according to the official site. The gadget choice is therefore presented as a general loadout decision across those platforms; no platform-specific handling difference is established in the cited material.
Bottom line for your loadout
The Grappling Hook is the deliberate choice for vertical access, chained movement, rooftop routes, and exterior descents, provided you can identify useful anchors and accept the possibility of tangles or failed grabs. The Snap Hook remains the deliberate choice for a fast, direct burst, but its 18 m range, 4% durability consumption, and 60 power cost demand more commitment than before. Equip according to the movement problem your raid actually presents—not according to a presumed upgrade ladder. The available evidence supports situational preference, not a single best gadget for every player or map.
