Start with updates and a backup, then adjust the settings that do the most work: shorten screen timeout, use lower or adaptive brightness, keep Adaptive Battery on, audit sensitive permissions, control location history deliberately, and manage storage from the built-in Storage screen. The exact menu names vary by Android version and manufacturer, so use the standard paths below as a guide rather than assuming every phone looks identical.
1. Update the phone and establish a baseline
Before changing many settings, install pending Android system updates and Google Play system or Play Store updates, then restart the phone once. Manufacturers place update controls in different locations, but they are usually under Settings > System > Software update, Settings > About phone, or a similarly named menu.
Use the phone normally for several days and check Settings > Battery > Battery usage before deciding which app or setting is responsible for high drain. A new Pixel or a phone that has just been factory-reset can take a few weeks to finish adapting its battery model. Early battery figures therefore are not a reliable basis for judging the device or declaring a setting ineffective.

Shorten screen timeout
The display is often the largest predictable source of battery use. Open Settings > Display > Screen timeout (the label may be Screen timeout or Sleep) and choose a short interval that still suits how you read. A shorter timeout stops an unattended screen from consuming power.

Lower brightness or enable adaptive brightness
Pull down Quick Settings and reduce brightness when conditions allow, or open Settings > Display > Adaptive brightness and enable it. Adaptive brightness responds to ambient light; it is not a promise that the screen will always be dim. In bright sunlight the phone may still raise output, so manually lowering brightness remains useful indoors.
Remove unnecessary keyboard feedback
Keyboard sounds and vibration happen on every keystroke. In your keyboard settings (for Gboard, commonly Settings > System > Keyboard > On-screen keyboard > Gboard > Preferences), turn off Sound on keypress and Haptic feedback on keypress if you do not need them. Menu paths differ for other keyboards.
Keep Adaptive Battery enabled
Open Settings > Battery > Adaptive preferences or Settings > Battery and leave Adaptive Battery on. Android uses it to limit background activity from apps you use less often. It is a broad system policy, not a replacement for investigating one badly behaved app.
Inspect battery usage before restricting an app
In Settings > Battery > Battery usage, select a high-use app and review foreground and background consumption. Restrict background use only when the trade-off is acceptable. Aggressive restrictions can postpone notifications, syncing, navigation updates, or other background work. Messaging, calendar, security, and work apps generally need more reliable background access than games or rarely opened shopping apps.

Use Battery Saver for low-charge situations
Turn on Battery Saver from Quick Settings or schedule it under Settings > Battery > Battery Saver. It limits or turns off some background activity and may reduce visual effects, connections, or app responsiveness. Notifications and updates can arrive later. A schedule is useful when you want protection below a chosen charge level; manual activation is better for an unusually long day.
Google summarizes the purpose this way: “You can take several actions to extend your device’s battery life and make a charge last longer.” There is no universal percentage improvement because screen technology, network conditions, battery size, signal strength, and app use differ by handset.
Choose connectivity deliberately
When practical, use Wi-Fi instead of a weak cellular signal, and turn off Bluetooth, hotspot, or Location when you are finished with them. Long GPS sessions, video streaming, demanding games, and hotspot use are workloads rather than defects; they can drain a battery quickly even on a well-configured phone. Do not disable connectivity permanently if doing so breaks a feature you rely on.

Use the adapter supplied with the phone or one explicitly confirmed for that model’s charging standard. An incompatible adapter may charge slowly and, in some cases, damage the phone or battery. Keep the device out of direct sun and remove heat-trapping conditions such as a hot car or heavy use while charging. Heat increases immediate drain and can harm long-term battery health.

Charging speed and battery longevity vary with the phone’s hardware, charger, cable, temperature, and software. Android’s general guidance does not establish one charging-time or battery-life percentage that applies to every model.
4. Secure the phone before changing privacy controls
On Android 13 and later, open Settings > Security and privacy. On Android 12 and earlier, Security and Privacy may be separate menus. Samsung, Motorola, OnePlus, Xiaomi, and other manufacturer interfaces can rename or relocate these controls.
Review the following items:
- Play Protect: check for warnings and keep app scanning enabled.
- Screen lock: use a strong PIN, password, or pattern; add fingerprint unlock when it provides a useful balance of speed and security.
- Google Account alerts: investigate unfamiliar sign-ins or security notices.
- System and security updates: install available patches.
- Find Hub or device-finder controls: verify that the phone can be located, locked, or erased if it is lost.
- Lock-screen notifications: hide sensitive content if other people might see the screen.
- App pinning: enable it when you occasionally lend the phone and want to keep the user inside one app.
When no issue is found, Android may display “Looks good.” Treat that as a current status check, not proof that every app or account choice is ideal.

5. Audit app access with Privacy Dashboard
Open Settings > Security and privacy (or Settings > Privacy) and select Privacy Dashboard. The dashboard shows which apps accessed sensitive permissions and when. Android 13 provides a seven-day view; Android 12 documents a 24-hour view.

Inspect camera, microphone, location, calendar, contacts, files, and any other permission shown. Select an app, read why it needs the permission, and choose the narrowest option that preserves its actual function:
- Allow only while using the app for features that need access during active use.
- Ask every time when access is occasional and you want a prompt.
- Don’t allow when the function does not require the data.
Do not disable everything indiscriminately. A navigation app without location, a video-call app without the microphone, or a camera app without camera access will simply lose its main function. Google describes the dashboard’s purpose as follows: “From the privacy dashboard, you can see which apps are accessing data, which permissions apps are using, and when that access is happening.”
6. Decide how much location access you want
Device location
Use Settings > Location to switch device location off when its benefits are not needed. This can reduce exposure of precise location and some background work, but it can also break maps, local search, nearby results, commute predictions, location-based reminders, and some safety features. A better compromise is often leaving Location on while changing individual app permissions to Allow only while using the app.

Device Location and Google Maps Timeline are separate choices. If your concern is saved precise-location history, open Google Maps and review Your Timeline and its auto-delete or pause controls. Turning off the device-wide Location switch does not by itself explain or manage every historical record already saved to an account.

Usage and diagnostics
Under Google settings, Usage and diagnostics is optional. Google states that turning it off still permits essential services, including receiving a new Android version, but it does not prevent individual apps from collecting data under their own privacy policies. Treat this switch as a choice about diagnostic sharing, not a master privacy control.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.7. Free storage without deleting important files
Start with the Storage overview
Open Settings > Storage and inspect category totals before deleting anything. The screen usually separates apps, images and videos, audio, downloads, system files, and other data. This tells you whether a large video folder, offline media, an unused app, or cached files are the real cause of the shortage.
Remove low-risk items first
- Open the Downloads category or your file manager and remove installers, duplicate documents, and files you have verified elsewhere.
- Review large videos and offline music or map areas. Confirm that you can stream or redownload them before deleting local copies.
- Uninstall apps you no longer use from Settings > Apps or the Play Store’s app-management screen.
- Empty app-specific trash or recycle bins if your file or photo app keeps deleted items for a retention period.
Use Smart storage when supported
Enable Smart storage from the Storage settings if your phone offers it. When storage is nearly full, Android can remove local copies of photos and videos that are already backed up. This saves device space while preserving the backed-up copy, but only after you have verified that the correct account contains the media.
Know the difference between cache and app data
From Settings > Apps > [app] > Storage, Clear cache removes temporary files and is usually the lower-risk troubleshooting step. Clear storage or Clear data resets the app’s local state; it can sign you out, erase downloaded content, remove offline databases, or discard unsynced work. Use it only after confirming that important data is synchronized or backed up. Some documented storage-management steps require Android 14 or later, so a missing button may reflect your version rather than an error.
8. Back up before cleanup, reset, or experimentation
Open Settings > Google > All services > Backup; the exact path can vary by manufacturer. Confirm the Google Account, inspect the data categories selected, and start a backup before clearing app data or considering a factory reset.
Google lists apps and app data, call history, contacts, device settings, and SMS/MMS among data that may be backed up. A Google Account includes up to 15 GB of backup storage at no charge, shared according to Google’s current account-storage rules. A backup can take up to 24 hours to complete. Restoration to a phone running an older Android version can be incomplete, so update the destination device when possible and verify that the backup date is recent.
Quick Recap
9. Choose settings by the trade-off you can accept
| Goal | Useful change | Cost or risk |
|---|---|---|
| Longer battery runtime | Shorter timeout, adaptive or lower brightness, Adaptive Battery, selective background limits, Battery Saver | Delayed notifications, reduced background syncing, or altered visual effects |
| More privacy | Review Privacy Dashboard, narrow camera/microphone/location permissions, manage Timeline, optionally disable Usage and diagnostics | Some app features, personalization, maps, or nearby results may stop working |
| More free space | Delete verified downloads, uninstall unused apps, use Smart storage, clear cache | Deleting local media removes offline access; clearing app data can erase local state |
| Least disruption | Change one setting at a time and monitor Battery usage, permissions, and Storage | Improvements are slower to identify, but troubleshooting is easier |
10. When a setting seems missing or ineffective
- The menu is not where the path says: use Settings search for “battery,” “privacy dashboard,” “location,” “storage,” or “backup.” Manufacturer software may use a different heading.
- Battery life is poor immediately after setup: finish updates, restart, and allow the phone’s adaptive model to learn normal use before drawing conclusions.
- Notifications arrive late: inspect Battery Saver and the affected app’s background battery setting; undo an overly aggressive restriction.
- A feature stopped working after a privacy change: return to Privacy Dashboard, select the app, and restore only the specific permission its function requires.
- Storage did not increase after deleting files: check trash folders, cached media, offline downloads, and whether Smart storage removed only backed-up local copies.
- A reset is being considered: verify the backup account and its completion date first; a reset is not a substitute for diagnosing one app or one large file category.
