A network protocol is a shared set of rules that networked devices and software follow to exchange data. It defines details such as message formats, addressing, sequencing, and the services one layer provides to another. IP, TCP, UDP, DNS, and HTTP are examples—but each does a different job.

What are network protocols used for?

Protocols let independently built systems interpret messages consistently and coordinate what happens next. Without shared conventions, a sender and receiver could disagree about where a message begins, what its fields mean, where data should go, or how to respond.

A protocol is a software-defined set of rules and message formats, not the physical cable, radio link, router, or switch carrying traffic. Standards often describe how protocol information is formatted on the wire, but the protocol itself is the convention that communicating systems implement.

Protocols do not all provide the same features. Some address and carry datagrams, some provide transport services to applications, and others define application-level exchanges. Reliability, encryption, and other functions depend on the protocol or combination of protocols involved.

How do network protocols work together?

Internet communication is commonly explained as a stack of layers. Each layer uses services from a lower layer and offers services to the layer above it. This division lets protocols handle distinct tasks rather than requiring one protocol to solve every communication problem.

  1. An application creates or processes information. An application protocol such as HTTP defines the meaning of exchanges between a client and server.
  2. A transport protocol carries application data. TCP or UDP provides a particular kind of service between communicating endpoints.
  3. IP addresses and carries datagrams. Internet Protocol includes source and destination addressing so datagrams can be conveyed across networks.
  4. Network links carry the traffic. Physical and link technologies move data over the available wired or wireless path.

This is a useful model, not the only possible way to classify every protocol. Protocols may be described by their role, the service they provide, or the layer in a particular model.

What are common network protocol types?

Protocol Role What distinguishes it
IP Internet or network layer Addresses and carries datagrams between source and destination.
TCP Transport Provides a reliable, ordered byte stream and retransmits data when loss is detected.
UDP Transport Provides connectionless datagrams while preserving message boundaries, with a minimal built-in service.
DNS Distributed naming system Provides a system for domain names and associated information.
HTTP Application Defines semantics for client requests and server responses concerning resources.

These examples span different roles; DNS and HTTP are not substitutes for IP, TCP, or UDP. An application exchange can use transport services, whose traffic is in turn conveyed in IP datagrams.

TCP vs. UDP: what is the difference?

TCP and UDP offer different transport service models. The right distinction is not simply “slow versus fast” or “good versus bad”; performance and suitability depend on implementation, network conditions, and what an application needs.

Comparison TCP UDP
Data model Ordered byte stream; applications read a sequence of bytes rather than discrete messages. Datagrams that preserve individual message boundaries.
Delivery behavior Reliable delivery, with loss detection and retransmission to recover detected loss. Minimal service; it does not provide TCP-style reliable, ordered delivery by itself.
Connection model Establishes a connection before exchanging the stream. Connectionless datagram service.
Additional mechanisms Provides transport functions including flow and congestion control. An application using UDP may add reliability, congestion control, or other mechanisms if its needs require them.

RFC 9293, the Internet Engineering Task Force’s TCP specification published in August 2022, states: “TCP provides a reliable, in-order, byte-stream service to applications.” That reliability does not mean that TCP encrypts traffic or authenticates peers.

Do network protocols provide security?

Not automatically. A protocol’s name or role does not guarantee confidentiality, authentication, or protection from tampering. In particular, TCP does not include built-in cryptographic confidentiality or authentication. Systems that need those properties typically add a separate security mechanism, such as TLS, above the transport service.

When assessing a connection, distinguish the functions of its component protocols: one may define an application exchange, another may transport its data, and another may supply security properties. Confirm the actual configuration rather than assuming a protocol provides protection simply because it is widely used.

  • What role does it perform? Addressing, transport, naming, and application semantics are different jobs.
  • Does it require connection setup? A connection-oriented service and a connectionless datagram service have different coordination needs.
  • How is data delivered? Determine whether the service is reliable or best-effort, and whether it presents an ordered stream or discrete messages.
  • Where are flow and congestion handled? These functions affect how traffic is managed and may be provided by the transport protocol or additional mechanisms.
  • Where does security come from? Identify which layer or separate protocol provides encryption and authentication, if needed.

Standards specify behavior and terminology; they do not establish one universal performance ranking or a single best protocol for every application.

Which standards describe these protocols?

The cited specifications include RFC 9293 for TCP (August 2022), RFC 9110 for HTTP semantics (June 2022), RFC 8095 for an informational survey of transport services (March 2017), RFC 791 for IP (September 1981), RFC 768 for UDP (August 1980), RFC 1034 for DNS concepts and facilities (November 1987), and RFC 1122 for host communication-layer requirements (October 1989). Specifications can be updated, so version-specific implementation questions should be checked against the relevant current standards and their updates.
