A network operating system (NOS) is software that provides networking functions on infrastructure such as routers and switches. It can manage routing, switching, hardware interaction, and device operations. In older LAN terminology, the same term can also mean server software that coordinates shared files, printers, accounts, and security.
What does a network operating system do?
On a router or switch, a NOS supplies the software environment for the device’s networking and management functions. Depending on the system and deployment, those functions can include:
- Moving traffic through routing and switching functions.
- Running or supporting network protocols, such as BGP and LLDP.
- Monitoring devices and exposing management information, including through SNMP.
- Interacting with the device’s forwarding hardware.
- Supporting operational tasks such as telemetry and automation.
These are possible capabilities, not a checklist that every NOS implements in the same way. For example, Cisco DevNet’s SONiC Architecture documentation describes SONiC components for routing protocols, LLDP, SNMP, link aggregation, and device monitoring.

How does a NOS work with network hardware?
A NOS provides the software layer in which network functions run and through which administrators manage a device. The architecture differs among products. In SONiC, a Switch Abstraction Interface (SAI) offers a uniform way for software to control forwarding hardware such as a switching ASIC, a network processing unit (NPU), or a software switch. That is a SONiC example, not a universal design requirement for all NOS products.

Modern network operating systems may also offer modular feature loading, management APIs, telemetry, automation, and security capabilities. Cisco presents these as themes of its IOS XR7 platform in its modern network operating system white paper; capabilities depend on the particular product and platform.
Examples of network operating systems
Examples include SONiC, Cisco IOS, Cisco IOS XR7, and Cisco NX-OS. They serve different products and are not automatically interchangeable.

| Example | What the cited source establishes | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| SONiC | Cisco DevNet describes it as an open-source NOS based on Debian Linux for network devices such as routers and switches. Cisco also describes a software stack designed to be shared across hardware from multiple vendors. | Confirm that the specific hardware and required features are supported in the intended deployment. |
| Cisco IOS | Cisco’s official IOS description identifies IOS as software at the heart of its internetworking solutions. | Check the relevant Cisco device and software documentation for platform support and capabilities. |
| Cisco IOS XR7 | Cisco’s white paper discusses IOS XR7 in connection with modularity, APIs, telemetry, automation, and security. | Verify features and release support for the particular platform. |
| Cisco NX-OS | Cisco DevNet’s Open NX-OS introduction identifies NX-OS as the operating system powering Cisco Nexus switches. | Check the Nexus model and its supported software documentation. |
The sources establish these examples, not a universal compatibility matrix or a performance ranking. To choose or evaluate a NOS, start with the target hardware and its support model, then check the required networking functions, management interfaces, automation and telemetry needs, update approach, and security capabilities.

Is a NOS the same as a server operating system?
No. In current network-infrastructure discussions, “network operating system” usually means software for network devices such as routers and switches. In older LAN and textbook usage, it can refer to server software that coordinates resources across connected computers, including shared files, printers, users, and security. TechTarget describes this LAN-oriented meaning in its network operating system overview.

A general-purpose operating system does not become a NOS merely because it supports TCP/IP or connects to the internet. The term refers to software designed for network-device functions or, in the older usage, for managing shared network resources.

What a NOS is not
- It is not a synonym for every operating system that can use a network.
- It is not one particular product: the term covers multiple systems with different architectures and hardware support.
- It does not guarantee that a feature or device will be supported. Compatibility and capabilities depend on the specific NOS, platform, and deployment.
