A network music player is a hi-fi source component that finds and plays digital music from network-accessible sources, including supported online services and music libraries shared from a computer or NAS. It connects to an amplifier, receiver, DAC, or powered speakers through the analogue or digital outputs provided on that model. It does not necessarily include speakers or amplification.
What does a network music player do?
It brings music from different digital sources into a home audio system. Depending on the player, you may browse and control playback in an app, send music using a supported protocol, or play files from a shared library. “Network player,” “network streamer,” and “music streamer” are commonly used for closely related source components.
Cambridge Audio describes a network player as a device for playing digital files from various sources. That is a vendor’s category description, not a formal industry standard. Cambridge Audio’s introduction to network players explains the basic role.
Online services and internet radio
Some models provide access to streaming services and internet radio, while others support services through protocols such as AirPlay or Spotify Connect. The available services depend on the model, product generation, country, and service changes. For example, Cambridge Audio’s US AXN10 page lists Spotify Connect, TIDAL Connect, Amazon Music, Qobuz, Deezer, internet radio, AirPlay 2, and Chromecast built-in. These are AXN10-specific claims, not features guaranteed on every network player. See the AXN10 specifications.

Music stored at home
A player may also access music files shared on a computer, home server, or NAS (network-attached storage). This usually relies on a local network and compatible server software or protocol, such as UPnP. The player and library must be configured to work together; owning a NAS alone does not guarantee that a particular player will find or play its contents. Cambridge Audio’s local-music setup guidance describes this kind of arrangement.

Does a network music player need internet access?
Not for every possible use. Internet access is needed for online music services and internet radio. A local music library may be reachable over your home network without an internet connection, although setup and control requirements vary by brand and playback method.

How does it connect to an amplifier or speakers?
Connection options vary by model. A player with a built-in DAC may provide analogue audio outputs for an amplifier or powered speakers. A player may also offer digital outputs to send audio to a separate DAC, receiver, or other compatible component. Confirm that the player’s actual outputs match the inputs on the equipment you plan to use; the label “network player” alone does not tell you which connections it has.
The AXN10 is one example of a model whose product page lists a DAC and both analogue and digital connection options. Check the specifications for the exact equipment you own rather than assuming those features are standard across the category. AXN10 connection details.

Does it need Ethernet, Wi-Fi, a NAS, or a USB drive?
These are options, not universal requirements. Ethernet provides a wired connection when the player and router can be connected by cable; Wi-Fi avoids running a cable where the model supports it. Local-library playback may use a computer or NAS, but it depends on compatible sharing software and configuration.
USB storage is also model-specific. Do not assume that every player supports USB playback or that it will work with every external hard drive. Cambridge Audio says the 851N is primarily a network music player and describes its USB ports as intended for convenient thumb-drive use, not as a guarantee of broad hard-drive compatibility. Cambridge Audio’s USB-drive compatibility guidance.
What to check before choosing one
Start with the system you already have and the sources you want to play. Compare the exact model specifications, not just broad category descriptions.
- Services: Confirm that the services you use are supported for the model generation and available in your country.
- Local library: Check support for the relevant sharing protocol and whether your computer or NAS server is compatible.
- Network connection: Verify whether the model supports Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or both, based on how you can connect it at home.
- Audio outputs: Match analogue or digital outputs to the inputs on your amplifier, receiver, external DAC, or powered speakers. Check whether a built-in DAC matters for your setup.
- Control: If you need app, voice-assistant, AirPlay, multiroom, or another specific control method, confirm that the exact model supports it.
- USB playback: Treat this as a separate feature to verify, including storage compatibility, rather than assuming it follows from network playback.
There is no single feature set shared by every network player, and the manufacturer materials cited here do not establish a market-wide ranking or measured sound-quality advantage. The right fit depends on the sources, connections, and control options your system requires.
