Choose a network adapter by first deciding whether you need wired Ethernet or Wi-Fi, then checking the computer’s connection, the speed required, and compatibility with the other devices on the network. A faster adapter cannot overcome a slower internet plan, router, switch, port, cable, or device elsewhere in the connection.
Start with the connection you need
Choose wired Ethernet if you want a cable-based connection, such as when a computer lacks an Ethernet jack or Wi-Fi is unsuitable. Choose Wi-Fi if you need a wireless connection or want to add or upgrade wireless networking. For Ethernet, match the adapter’s USB connector and rated speed to the computer and network. For Wi-Fi, check the adapter’s form factor, supported Wi-Fi bands, drivers, and router capabilities.
Think about the whole connection path, not just the adapter. Actual throughput can be limited by the internet service plan, router or switch, cabling, computer port, peer device, and network conditions. For local transfers to a NAS, the storage and local network path matter too; internet-plan speed alone does not determine transfer performance.

Which adapter type fits your computer?
USB Ethernet adapter
A USB Ethernet adapter adds a wired network connection to a computer without an Ethernet jack. Match USB-A or USB-C to an available port, and select a speed tier supported by the network equipment you intend to use. Adapter examples include 1Gbps, 2.5Gbps, and 5Gbps models; a multi-gigabit adapter is useful only if the rest of the relevant network path supports that rate. See Plugable’s USB Ethernet selection guidance.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
A USB 3.0 Ethernet adapter connected through a USB 2.0 port is constrained by the slower host connection. Likewise, buying a 2.5Gbps adapter will not raise internet service capped at 1Gbps.
USB Wi-Fi adapter
A USB Wi-Fi adapter adds or upgrades wireless networking through an external port. It is portable, does not require opening a desktop case, and can be used with laptops as well as desktops. Before buying, check the USB connection, operating-system driver availability, supported Wi-Fi generation and bands, and whether your router supports them. See TP-Link’s USB and PCIe Wi-Fi comparison.

PCIe Wi-Fi card
A PCIe Wi-Fi card is an internal choice for a desktop. Confirm there is a compatible free motherboard slot and enough room in the case for the card and bracket. Installation involves opening the computer, and the card stays with that system. Some models also provide Bluetooth, but check the exact product specification rather than assuming that feature is included.

A direct motherboard connection avoids sharing a USB connection’s bandwidth, but PCIe does not guarantee better Wi-Fi speed by itself. Wi-Fi generation, antenna design, signal conditions, and the router are more important to the result than connector format alone.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
Internal M.2 wireless module
Some serviceable computers may allow an internal M.2 Wi-Fi module to be replaced. Check the computer maker’s documentation for supported modules, module size and keying, antenna connections, drivers, and any platform restrictions before purchasing. A module’s specifications do not establish that it works in every computer.
Choose a Wi-Fi band for the environment
| Band | Typical strengths | Trade-offs and requirements |
|---|---|---|
| 2.4 GHz | Generally reaches farther, penetrates obstacles better, and works with a broad range of devices. | Typically offers lower throughput and can be more congested. |
| 5 GHz | Generally provides faster throughput and less congestion than 2.4 GHz. | Typically has shorter range and weaker obstacle penetration than 2.4 GHz. |
| 6 GHz | Can provide very fast throughput, lower congestion, and low latency when the connection is strong, particularly near the router. | Has shorter range and requires Wi-Fi 6E-compatible equipment and drivers, as well as local availability. |
These are general trade-offs, not speed guarantees. Distance, walls, interference, router support, client drivers, and local regulatory availability affect what bands you can use and the results you get. Microsoft’s Wi-Fi guidance notes that 2.4 GHz is often suitable for basic tasks such as web browsing and email.

Check compatibility and speed claims
- Computer interface: Confirm the adapter fits an available USB port, PCIe slot, or supported internal module configuration.
- Network equipment: Check that the router, switch, cabling, and device at the other end support the speed or Wi-Fi band you intend to use.
- Operating system and drivers: Verify current, model-specific support with the adapter maker and computer manufacturer. Support can change over time.
- Realistic throughput: Treat advertised link or peak data rates as specifications, not a promise of real-world transfer speed or faster internet service.
For example, Intel identifies its AX210 as a Wi-Fi 6E-capable adapter supporting 2.4, 5, and 6 GHz bands, dual-stream Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 5.3, and 160 MHz channels. Intel advertises peak data rates up to 2.4Gbps under stated Wi-Fi 6 conditions; that is a vendor specification, not expected real-world throughput or an independent comparison. Its product brief describes M.2 2230 and 1216 forms, but does not establish compatibility with every computer. Check the computer maker’s compatibility documentation as well as Intel’s AX210 product brief.

When server needs change the decision
For network-intensive Windows Server deployments, link rate is not the only consideration. Supported network interface card (NIC) offloads can move tasks such as checksum calculation and packet segmentation from the CPU to the adapter, which may reduce CPU work in appropriate workloads. This is a server-specific capability, not a blanket performance promise for consumer computers. Check that both the adapter and the specific operating system support the feature. Microsoft’s guidance covers Windows Server 2025, 2022, 2019, and 2016, and Azure Local 2311.2 and later; the page’s detailed examples also include earlier Windows Server versions. See Microsoft’s high-performance networking guidance.
