After a factory reset, restore your NETGEAR router by reconnecting it to the modem, joining its default Wi-Fi network, and completing setup in the Nighthawk app or router web interface. Then set separate administrator and Wi-Fi credentials, check firmware, and troubleshoot performance only after the connection is working. A factory reset erases custom settings; a reboot usually does not.

Before resetting again: choose the least disruptive fix

A reboot is different from a factory reset. NETGEAR says Wi-Fi settings remain saved when you reboot. To power-cycle the router, turn it off, wait 30 seconds, and turn it back on. If the issue is a forgotten administrator password, try the model’s password-recovery procedure first if available.

If you cannot reach the router’s web interface, confirm your device is connected to the router and that you are using the correct address and credentials. Temporarily disconnect other networks or VPN connections; try another device or a wired Ethernet connection; and power-cycle the modem and router. See NETGEAR’s access troubleshooting guidance and reboot instructions.

What a factory reset changes

A reset removes personalized settings, including the administrator credentials, Wi-Fi name (SSID), Wi-Fi password, and security configuration. You will need to set up the router again and reconnect devices as needed. NETGEAR’s factory-reset guidance describes the general process.

#1 Best Overall
NETGEAR Nighthawk WiFi 6 Router R6700AX, Up to 1,500 sq ft, 1.8 Gbps
  • NIGHTHAWK WIFI 6 ROUTER FOR YOUR WHOLE HOME: Delivers fast, reliable WiFi across every room of your apartment or small home for streaming, gaming, video calls, and smart home devices, all running at the same time without slowing each other down.
  • WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING INTERNET SERVICE: Pairs with your existing modem or gateway via ethernet. Compatible with most cable, fiber, DSL, and satellite providers. Some gateways and modem router combos may require bridge mode. No coax needed.
  • SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
  • READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
  • COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.

For the general procedure, NETGEAR says to check that the router is powered on, locate the recessed Restore Factory Settings or Reset button, press and hold it with a paper clip or similar object for seven seconds, then release it. Follow the manual for your exact model: another NETGEAR password-recovery article describes a 15-second hold for its particular recovery scenario, so the timing and steps can vary. Consult the password-recovery instructions and your model’s manual rather than assuming one timing applies to every router.

Do not assume every model uses the same default administrator login. NETGEAR lists admin and password for some devices, while newer products may require you to create a password during initial setup. Check the router label, setup screen, and model documentation; NETGEAR’s default-credentials information explains the variation.

Restore internet access and Wi-Fi

  1. Reconnect the internet line. Connect the router’s Internet port to the modem or incoming Ethernet line, then power on the router.
  2. Join the default Wi-Fi network. Use the SSID and Wi-Fi key printed on the QR-code label or permanent router label to connect a phone or computer.
  3. Run setup. Use the Nighthawk app if your router supports it, or use the router’s web interface. NETGEAR provides instructions for setup with the installation wizard and setup through the web interface. App support and menu labels depend on the model.
  4. Check the wired connection if setup has no internet. Verify that the modem is online and the cable is seated in the correct router port. For further steps, use guidance specific to your model and internet service.

Set administrator and Wi-Fi credentials separately

The administrator password controls access to router settings. The Wi-Fi password lets devices join the wireless network; they are not interchangeable. During setup, create a strong administrator password. If you change the Wi-Fi SSID or key in Wireless settings, reconnect your devices using the new network details. NETGEAR notes that devices can disconnect after those changes are saved. Its SSID and Wi-Fi password instructions describe the process.

Secure the network and check for firmware updates

Choose a supported Wi-Fi security mode

Use WPA2 or WPA3 where the router and your devices support it. NETGEAR advises against WEP when other options are supported, but available security modes vary by model and older devices may offer fewer choices. See its security-protocol guidance.

Check for router firmware

Look for firmware updates in the Nighthawk app or router web interface. NETGEAR says updates can improve performance, add features, and enhance security; the available controls depend on the model. If an update is offered, do not interrupt installation or turn off the router. It will restart when the update is complete. Follow NETGEAR’s firmware instructions.

Improve Wi-Fi only when there is a reason

A factory reset does not by itself show that wireless speed will improve. First verify that the router is set up correctly, the modem and router connections are stable, firmware is current, and suitable security is enabled.

Leave channel selection on its default setting unless you have symptoms such as frequent disconnections or slow transfers that could point to interference. NETGEAR says its routers select channels that work well for most users and recommends defaults unless interference is a problem. If you test a different channel, treat it as an experiment, not a guaranteed speed fix. Available channels depend on the router’s bands and your region; extenders may also need compatible settings. See NETGEAR’s channel instructions.

Restore a saved configuration carefully

If you previously saved a router configuration, NETGEAR allows you to restore it from a .cfg file through the router interface. Restoring overwrites the current configuration. A backup may contain the settings that caused the original problem, so use it only if you want those settings back. If it restores a different SSID or Wi-Fi password, devices may need to reconnect. NETGEAR explains the process in its backup and restore instructions.

When to consider different hardware

If an older router still cannot meet your household’s needs after setup and troubleshooting, a replacement router or whole-home mesh system may be worth considering. That is not a diagnosis based on a reset alone: weigh your exact model, home layout, coverage gaps, internet service, device needs, wired connections, and budget. NETGEAR discusses this as a conditional option in its factory-reset and upgrade article.
