Short answer: Don’t assume the Orbi 770’s IoT WiFi is isolated from your main network just because it has a separate network name. Its manual documents IoT settings for bands, name, and security, but not VLAN or firewall isolation. A NETGEAR Community Guru said the IoT network shares the main WLAN, while guest is the isolated network; that is model-specific community guidance, not a formal NETGEAR security guarantee.
What the Orbi 770 documentation establishes
The Orbi 770 package page identifies the RBE771 router and RBE770 satellites and advertises main, IoT, and guest WiFi networks. Those labels describe network options; they do not, on their own, prove that each network is a distinct security zone.
The RBE771v2/RBE770v2 user manual documents IoT WiFi controls for enabling the network, selecting bands, changing its SSID, and configuring its password and security. It does not document the IoT network as VLAN-isolated or provide an IoT isolation control. The manual’s guest setup describes SSID and encryption choices, but does not give a detailed security specification of which local devices guest clients can reach.
NETGEAR describes its WiFi 7 Orbi IoT network as useful for connecting printers, smart devices, and older devices. That supports a compatibility purpose, not a claim that the IoT SSID is isolated. See NETGEAR WiFi 7 device-connection guidance.

How main, IoT, and guest WiFi differ
| Network | What it is for | What is established about access |
|---|---|---|
| Main WiFi | Your trusted household devices and the default LAN context. | The product page identifies it as the main network for connected-home devices; the cited material does not define a separate access boundary for it. |
| IoT WiFi | A separate SSID and credentials, with selectable bands to support device compatibility. | The model manual documents configuration, not a VLAN-isolation boundary. A Community Guru says IoT remains on the same WLAN as the main network. |
| Guest WiFi | A separate network and credentials for visitors. | A Community Guru identifies guest as isolated. The model manual does not provide a detailed isolation specification, so treat that as community guidance rather than a formal security guarantee. |
The Orbi-specific explanation comes from a NETGEAR Community discussion dated February 5, 2025. In response to a question about Orbi 770 IoT and guest network ranges, Community Guru FURRYe38 said IoT stays on the same WLAN so apps on phones connected to the main network can communicate with IoT devices, and described guest as isolated. That is useful model-specific guidance, but it is not a published security assurance or a lab test.
Why a separate SSID is not the same as isolation
An SSID is the name clients use to join a WiFi network. Having a different SSID and password can make it easier to connect or manage devices, but it does not establish whether those devices can communicate with one another or reach the main LAN. A true segmentation claim needs evidence about network boundaries or access rules, such as documented VLAN or firewall isolation.

WiFi encryption answers a different question: whether the wireless connection is protected from unauthorized access. The RBE771/RBE770 manual offers WPA2-PSK, mixed WPA2/WPA3-Personal, or WPA3-Personal for guest WiFi. It warns that some older computers and WiFi devices cannot use WPA3 and advises WPA2-PSK for those devices. A stronger encryption option does not itself prevent an authenticated client from reaching local devices.

IoT WiFi settings
In the Orbi app or router interface, open Wireless settings and configure IoT WiFi. The manual allows you to enable or disable it, choose 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz, 2.4 GHz only, or 5 GHz only, change the SSID, and change its password/security settings. Choose bands based on what your devices support. These are connectivity and credential controls, not documented isolation settings.

Guest WiFi security
In the guest WiFi setup, enable a password and select an encryption option supported by the devices your visitors will use. Use WPA2-PSK for older devices that cannot connect with WPA3, as the manual advises. This protects the wireless link; it does not by itself establish which local devices guests can reach.
NETGEAR’s general Orbi guest-network guidance describes a setting that lets guests see one another and access the local network; it says the setting is cleared by default. However, the page’s listed product applicability does not include RBE771/RBE770. Do not assume that checkbox, its default, or its behavior applies to the Orbi 770 without model-specific confirmation.

What to do if you need stronger IoT separation
- Do not treat the IoT network name or a stronger WiFi password as proof of isolation.
- If a device must not be able to reach trusted computers, storage, or other local devices, ask NETGEAR to confirm the behavior for your exact RBE771/RBE770 firmware and operating mode.
- If you need an explicit segmentation guarantee, choose a router or access-point setup whose documentation specifies VLAN or firewall rules between IoT and trusted networks, then verify that those rules apply to your devices.
The available model-specific documentation and community guidance do not establish the current firmware’s implementation through testing or specify that the SSIDs use distinct IP subnets. For a security requirement that depends on a strict boundary, use a setup with explicitly documented segmentation rather than relying on the IoT SSID label.
