Short answer: For US subscribers comparing current plans, Max usually delivers more premium features for the money, especially ad-free viewing, 4K, downloads, and selected live sports. Netflix can be the better personal value if its originals, games, interface, or the titles your household actually watches matter more than specifications. The right choice depends on your viewing list, screen setup, tolerance for ads, and how many people need access.

Current US prices and features

The following plans and prices were listed for the United States on October 18, 2026. Monthly prices can change, and taxes, promotions, bundles, and app-store billing may alter the amount charged. Treat this as a snapshot for the date above, not a permanent price guarantee.

Service Entry tier Ad-free middle tier Premium tier Important features
Netflix Standard with ads — $8.99/month Standard — $19.99/month Premium — $26.99/month Premium supports four simultaneous devices, 4K Ultra HD with HDR, downloads on six devices, spatial audio, and up to two extra members subject to eligibility and fees.
Max Basic with Ads — $10.99/month Standard — $18.49/month Premium — $22.99/month Premium supports four devices, 4K where available, Dolby Atmos, 100 downloads, and selected live sports. Premium sports viewing is limited to two simultaneous devices.

Both services place two simultaneous streams on their lower and middle tiers and four on their premium tiers. Netflix Standard with ads and Standard allow downloads on two devices; Netflix Premium raises that to six. Max Standard allows 30 downloads, while Max Premium allows 100.

Lowest advertised monthly price

Netflix Standard with ads is the least expensive plan in this comparison. It costs $8.99 per month, compared with $10.99 for Max Basic with Ads. The Netflix ad tier is not identical to the ad-free plans: Netflix warns that some titles may be unavailable on it, so the lower bill can come with a smaller playable catalog.

Lowest ad-free price

Max Standard is the cheaper ad-free option. At the listed rates, it is $1.50 less per month than Netflix Standard. Over 12 months, that difference is $18 before taxes or price changes. Max also includes a larger stated download allowance and selected live sports at this level.

Premium price

Max Premium is $4 less per month than Netflix Premium, a $48 annual difference if both prices remain unchanged for a full year. Netflix Premium nevertheless adds a larger download-device allowance, spatial audio, and the option for up to two extra members, so the cheaper Max plan is not automatically the better choice for every household.

What you get at each service’s entry tier

Netflix Standard with ads

  • Lowest monthly price among the six plans compared here.
  • Advertising-supported playback, with some titles potentially unavailable.
  • Two simultaneous streams.
  • Downloads on two devices.

This tier makes sense when keeping the monthly bill as low as possible is more important than ad-free viewing and your household has confirmed that the shows and films it wants are playable on the ad plan.

Max Basic with Ads

  • Access to the Max catalog at the service’s lowest listed price.
  • Advertising-supported playback.
  • Two simultaneous streams.

Max Basic with Ads costs more than Netflix’s ad tier, so its value depends on wanting Max’s particular programming rather than simply seeking the cheapest streaming subscription.

Comparing the ad-free middle tiers

For many households, the middle tier is the practical sweet spot: no advertising, two simultaneous streams, and enough quality for a typical television, tablet, or laptop.

Netflix Standard

Netflix Standard costs $19.99 per month and provides ad-free 1080p viewing, two simultaneous streams, downloads on two devices, and the option to add one extra member where Netflix’s eligibility rules and fees permit it. It is a good fit for a couple, a small household, or a viewer who does not own a 4K display and does not need more than two people watching at once.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Max Standard

Max Standard costs $18.49 per month. It is the lower-priced ad-free plan in this comparison, supports 1080p viewing and two devices, permits 30 downloads, and includes the selected live sports listed on Max’s official plan page. If your priority is ad-free access at the lowest price while retaining offline viewing and those sports events, this is the strongest straightforward value.

Where the middle-tier choice can change

Price and specifications do not settle catalog fit. A cheaper subscription is poor value if it does not carry the series, film, or event your household intends to watch. Rights differ by country and can change over time, so search both services for your specific watchlist before subscribing. A 2026 comparison of the official plan information does not establish that either service has a universally larger library.

4K, HDR, and sound quality

Netflix reserves 4K Ultra HD and HDR for Premium. Netflix also lists spatial audio as a Premium feature. If you have a compatible 4K television, receiver, or sound system and care about the highest listed picture and sound tier, the entry and middle Netflix plans will not provide the same specification.

Max puts 4K and Dolby Atmos on Premium, where the title and device support them. “Where available” matters: a Premium subscription does not convert every title into a 4K or Atmos stream, and compatibility varies by program, device, and connection. Max Standard remains a 1080p plan.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to decide whether 4K is worth paying for

  • Choose a premium tier when you have a 4K-capable screen, sit close enough to see the difference, and regularly watch titles offered in 4K or HDR.
  • Stay with a middle tier when your main screen is 1080p, your internet or device cannot handle 4K, or most viewing happens on phones and tablets.
  • Check audio hardware before paying for Dolby Atmos or spatial audio; ordinary television speakers may not reproduce the benefit.

Streams, devices, and household sharing

Both services list two simultaneous streams on their lower and middle plans and four on their premium plans. That is a concurrency limit, not a promise that an unlimited number of people can use one account at once.

Netflix’s household rule

Netflix states: “You cannot share your Netflix account outside of your household, which is a collection of devices connected to the internet at the main residence where you watch Netflix.” Netflix Standard permits one extra member and Premium permits up to two, subject to the fees, eligibility conditions, and account rules shown by Netflix. Those options are different from simply handing the password to people in other homes.

Max’s sports-stream limit

Max Premium lists four supported devices, but its plan information limits sports viewing to two devices at the same time. If several people plan to watch live sports concurrently, use the sports-specific limit rather than the general four-device figure when deciding whether the plan is adequate.

The supplied plan information does not establish an equivalent Max extra-member policy. Do not assume that Netflix’s household and extra-member rules apply to Max; check the account terms displayed during sign-up.

Downloads and offline viewing

Download limits can matter more than headline video quality for commuters, travelers, students, or anyone with unreliable broadband.

Plan group Download allowance stated Practical implication
Netflix Standard with ads Two devices Suitable for one or two people who download selectively.
Netflix Standard Two devices Ad-free offline viewing without moving to Premium.
Netflix Premium Six devices More flexibility for a larger household or several personal devices.
Max Standard 30 downloads Substantially more title slots than Netflix’s middle tier.
Max Premium 100 downloads Best stated allowance for extensive offline libraries.

A download allowance is not the same as permanent ownership. Titles can expire or become unavailable if licensing changes, and downloaded files remain subject to each service’s app and account rules.

Which service has better sports?

Max has the clearer documented sports advantage in the plans compared here because both Standard and Premium include selected live sports. The official plan information names selected MLB, NHL, NCAA Men’s March Madness, U.S. Soccer, and premier cycling events.

“Selected” is the crucial word. The inclusion does not mean every game, every match, or every event in those sports is available. Availability, broadcasts, blackout conditions, and other restrictions are governed by Max’s terms. Check the event schedule for your region before subscribing solely for sports.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Netflix’s plan facts in this comparison do not list a comparable live-sports package. Choose Netflix for its on-demand catalog, originals, games, or interface rather than expecting the same documented live-event benefit.

Catalog and exclusives: the most personal part of the decision

Streaming value is ultimately measured in hours your household actually watches. A plan with better specifications can still be wasteful if its catalog does not match your interests.

Netflix is the better fit when

  • Your watchlist is dominated by Netflix originals or the service’s current licensed catalog.
  • You use Netflix games and want them alongside video in one subscription.
  • You prefer Netflix’s interface, recommendations, profiles, or playback behavior enough to use it more often.
  • You need up to two eligible extra members and are willing to pay the applicable fees.
  • You want six download devices, 4K HDR, or spatial audio and those features matter more than Max’s lower premium price.

Max is the better fit when

  • You specifically want Max’s HBO and Warner programming or other titles available in its catalog.
  • You want the lowest-priced ad-free plan between these services.
  • You download many titles and value 30 or 100 download slots.
  • You want the selected live sports included with Standard and Premium.
  • You have compatible 4K and Dolby Atmos equipment and can use the premium features on available titles.

Because catalogs and rights vary by country, the US recommendation above should not be generalized to Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, or another market. Even within the US, a single must-watch series can outweigh every price comparison.

Is Netflix Premium worth its price?

Netflix Premium is worth considering when at least one of its specific advantages solves a real household need:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Four people need to stream at the same time.
  • You routinely watch 4K HDR titles on a compatible display.
  • You use spatial audio with compatible equipment.
  • More than two devices need downloads.
  • You need up to two eligible extra members and accept the additional fees and conditions.

If none of those conditions applies, Netflix Standard usually preserves the core ad-free experience at a lower monthly cost. Paying for Premium solely because it is the top tier is difficult to justify when your devices, viewing habits, and household size do not use its added capacity.

When Max Premium is the sensible upgrade

Max Premium costs less than Netflix Premium while adding 4K where available, Dolby Atmos, four devices, 100 downloads, and selected live sports. It is the logical upgrade for a Max subscriber whose household uses those features rather than merely wanting the word “Premium” on the account.

There are two important qualifications. First, sports viewing on the Premium plan is limited to two simultaneous devices even though the general device allowance is four. Second, 4K and Dolby Atmos depend on title and device availability. If your television or sound system cannot use them, Max Standard may offer better value.

Annual cost at the listed monthly rates

For a simple budget comparison, multiplying each listed monthly price by 12 produces the following totals. These are arithmetic estimates before taxes, promotions, bundles, or future price changes; streaming services generally bill monthly rather than requiring this annual payment upfront.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Plan Monthly price 12-month total at unchanged rate
Netflix Standard with ads $8.99 $107.88
Netflix Standard $19.99 $239.88
Netflix Premium $26.99 $323.88
Max Basic with Ads $10.99 $131.88
Max Standard $18.49 $221.88
Max Premium $22.99 $275.88

The annualized figures show why Max’s middle and premium tiers look strong on price, but they do not assign a dollar value to a favorite show, a sports season, a game catalog, or a better interface. Those personal benefits determine whether the subscription is used enough to earn its cost.

A five-minute decision method

  1. Write down the must-watch list. Include specific series, films, sports events, and games rather than choosing by brand reputation.
  2. Mark your picture and sound needs. Note whether your main screen supports 4K HDR and whether your audio equipment supports Dolby Atmos or spatial audio.
  3. Count simultaneous viewers. Two streams cover the lower and middle tiers; four require a premium plan, while Max sports viewing has its separate two-device limit.
  4. Count download devices. Travelers may benefit more from Max’s 30 or 100 stated downloads than from a higher picture resolution.
  5. Decide how you feel about ads. Netflix’s ad tier is cheaper, but some titles may be unavailable. Max’s ad tier costs more than Netflix’s entry option.
  6. Check household eligibility. Netflix’s account-sharing rule and extra-member options have specific conditions. Review the current terms for any service before sharing access.
  7. Compare the resulting plans, not the logos. Select the least expensive plan that satisfies every requirement you marked as essential.

Pitfalls that can make a “cheap” plan poor value

Choosing an ad tier without checking a title

Netflix explicitly notes that some titles may be unavailable on its ad-supported plan. Search for the programs you care about before downgrading for the lower price.

Assuming a premium badge guarantees 4K

Both services qualify their highest-resolution offerings by title, device, or availability. A Premium subscription is necessary for the listed features but is not sufficient to make every stream 4K or Atmos.

Confusing simultaneous streams with account permission

A four-device allowance describes playback at one time. It does not override household rules, extra-member eligibility, geographic restrictions, or other account terms.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Paying for sports without checking the exact event

Max’s listed sports are selected events, not an unrestricted pass to every league or game. Verify the schedule, region, and broadcast conditions for the event you intend to watch.

Using a catalog comparison from another country

Licensing differs by territory and changes over time. A recommendation based on a US plan page may be wrong for another country, and a title available today may leave later.

How the recommendation changes by viewer

Single viewer on a budget

Start with Netflix Standard with ads if its catalog contains your priorities and you can accept advertising and possible title gaps. If you require ad-free playback, Max Standard is the lower-priced route between the two.

Two-person household with no 4K television

Compare Netflix Standard and Max Standard. Both meet the basic two-stream requirement; Max has the lower listed price, more downloads, and selected sports, while Netflix may win if its catalog or interface gets substantially more use.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Family with a 4K television

Compare Netflix Premium and Max Premium only after checking how many people stream simultaneously, which service carries the family’s must-watch titles, and whether the available programs support the desired 4K and audio formats.

Frequent traveler

Give download allowances unusual weight. Max’s stated 30-download Standard allowance and 100-download Premium allowance may be more useful than a small monthly saving, while Netflix Premium’s six-device limit can suit households with several personal devices.

Sports-first subscriber

Begin with Max’s event list and terms. Its Standard and Premium plans include selected live sports, but confirm that the specific league, event, and number of concurrent sports viewers match your needs.

How often should you recheck the choice?

Revisit the decision when a price, plan name, sports right, account-sharing rule, or major title changes. The figures and features in this guide were checked for the US on October 18, 2026. Official plan pages are the final authority before purchase because monthly rates, availability, and terms can change without preserving this comparison.
