Short answer: choose Netflix if its must-watch catalog, two- or four-device limits, and 1080p/4K options fit your household. Choose standalone Hulu if the shows you follow are on Hulu and its annual or monthly price works for you. Choose Hulu + Live TV only when you actually need live channels, because it is a separate, much more expensive product. There is no universal winner: compare your household’s titles, simultaneous viewing, ad tolerance, offline needs, picture equipment, and recurring cost. Prices and promotions change, so verify the checkout page before subscribing.
Netflix and Hulu are different choices, not interchangeable plans
Netflix is an on-demand service. Its cited US plans provide a Netflix catalog, with plan differences mainly affecting advertising, picture quality, downloads, and the number of devices that can watch at once. Netflix does not provide a live-channel package in the comparison described here.
“Hulu” can mean two different products. Standalone Hulu is an on-demand library with an ad-supported or Premium tier. Hulu + Live TV combines the Hulu library with live channels and additional bundle components. Treating Hulu + Live TV as if it were merely a more expensive version of the standalone library leads to a misleading comparison.

The practical decision is therefore conditional:
- Pick Netflix when its current catalog contains more of your household’s priority titles, or when its plan-specific stream count, 1080p/4K options, or download allowances fit better.
- Pick standalone Hulu when Hulu’s current episodes and films are the reason you are subscribing and its ad or Premium terms are acceptable.
- Pick Hulu + Live TV when live news, sports, broadcast stations, or other linear channels are essential. Compare its full recurring price and local-channel availability with other live-TV options rather than with a basic on-demand subscription.
Catalogs, promotions, device support, and plan eligibility can change. Check the title availability for your US location and confirm the exact plan immediately before payment.

Current US prices and plan features
The figures below are US-dollar prices from the cited official pages. Netflix figures were accessed October 13, 2026. Hulu’s standalone page was published September 30, 2026 and lists new-subscription prices effective September 23, 2026; existing Hulu subscribers may see a price change on or after October 21, 2026. Your location, a third-party billing package, eligibility, or a promotion can change what you are offered.
| Service and plan | Regular price shown | Ads | Simultaneous viewing | Video and audio | Downloads |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Netflix Standard with ads | $8.99/month | Commercial breaks in most titles; some titles unavailable because of licensing | 2 supported devices | 1080p Full HD | 2 supported devices at a time |
| Netflix Standard | $19.99/month | No ad-supported breaks in the plan’s catalog | 2 supported devices | 1080p Full HD | 2 supported devices |
| Netflix Premium | $26.99/month | No ad-supported breaks in the plan’s catalog | 4 supported devices | 4K Ultra HD + HDR and spatial audio | 6 supported devices |
| Hulu (With Ads) | $12.49/month or $124.99/year | Ads | Multiple devices are listed; confirm the rule for your exact subscription | Up to 4K UHD and 5.1 audio, where supported | Not included |
| Hulu Premium (No Ads) | $18.99/month | No ads in most of the library; a few rights-limited programs still play a short ad before and after an episode | Confirm the rule for your exact subscription | Up to 4K UHD, where supported | Select shows and movies on supported mobile devices |
Netflix lists extra-member options for Standard and Premium, subject to its plan rules and eligibility. Netflix also says an account cannot be shared outside the household, which it defines around devices connected to the internet at the main residence. A person who lives elsewhere may require an eligible paid extra-member slot rather than simply using the household login.
Hulu’s annual ad-supported price is not an automatic apples-to-apples saving against Netflix: Netflix does not list an equivalent annual price in the cited plan information, and the services have different catalogs and policies. Calculate the amount your household will actually pay over 12 months, including any bundle or add-on.
Promotional prices are separate from the regular rates in the table. Read the offer’s eligibility, duration, renewal price, and cancellation terms before treating a first-month or introductory deal as the household’s ongoing cost.
How to compare the real cost for your household
Match the advertising tier first
The most obvious comparison is Netflix Standard with ads at $8.99 per month versus Hulu (With Ads) at $12.49 per month. That does not establish Netflix as universally cheaper: Hulu also lists a $124.99 annual option, while the plans differ in catalogs, simultaneous-device rules, and other features. Compare the same billing period and include taxes or package charges shown at checkout.
Price the number of people watching at once
A household with one viewer may not need Premium simply because it has a 4K television. A family watching in separate rooms may find a two-device limit more important than a small monthly price difference. Netflix explicitly provides two simultaneous devices on both Standard tiers and four on Premium. Hulu’s standalone listing uses “multiple simultaneous devices,” so verify the exact screen limit displayed for your account. On Hulu + Live TV, the Hulu library is described as supporting two screens, while an Unlimited Screens add-on is available for eligible plans at an additional charge.

Separate library subscriptions from bundles
Hulu’s cited choices include Hulu + Live TV with Disney+ and ESPN Select for $99.99 per month, and Premium Hulu + Live TV with Disney+ Premium and ESPN Select for $109.99 per month. A Live TV Only plan is listed at $98.99 per month and does not include Hulu’s streaming library or Disney+. The bundle components and purchase eligibility matter as much as the headline price.

Ads, “no ads,” and what you will still see
Netflix with ads
Netflix’s ad-supported experience places commercial breaks in most titles. Netflix also identifies some titles that cannot be shown on the ad plan because of licensing restrictions. If a particular film or series is essential, check that it is available on the ad-supported tier before choosing the cheaper rate. The ad plan still lists 1080p and two supported simultaneous devices.
Netflix Standard and Premium
The Standard and Premium plans remove the ad-supported commercial breaks described for the ad tier. That does not mean every playback event is free of service messages or that licensing is identical across regions; it means the plan is not the commercial-break version listed by Netflix. Premium adds 4K Ultra HD, HDR, spatial audio, four simultaneous devices, and downloads on six supported devices.
Hulu Premium
Hulu Premium is described as having no ads in most of its library. Hulu notes an important rights exception: a few shows still play a short ad before and after an episode. Hulu + Live TV also carries ads in live programming and linear content, even when the Hulu library component is Premium. Anyone seeking uninterrupted viewing should distinguish an on-demand episode from a live channel or rights-limited program.
Simultaneous streams and household sharing
“How many devices can use the account?” has two separate answers: how many devices may be signed in or downloaded to, and how many may play at the same time. The latter is the limit that matters during a busy evening.
- Netflix Standard with ads and Netflix Standard each allow two supported simultaneous devices.
- Netflix Premium allows four supported simultaneous devices.
- Netflix’s household policy centers the account on devices connected to the internet at the main residence. Extra-member options exist for Standard and Premium under Netflix’s rules.
- Hulu’s standalone page says multiple simultaneous devices but does not provide one universal number for every standalone situation in the supplied plan details. Confirm the screen rule attached to the plan you are buying.
- Hulu + Live TV describes two screens for the Hulu library and offers Unlimited Screens for eligible Live TV plans as a paid add-on.
For a couple watching one television and a tablet, a two-stream plan may be sufficient. For parents, roommates, or children using several televisions simultaneously, count the maximum concurrent sessions—not the number of people who might watch during a week.

Picture quality, sound, and device requirements
Netflix lists 1080p Full HD for Standard with ads and Standard. Premium lists 4K Ultra HD + HDR and spatial audio. Hulu’s standalone tiers list up to 4K UHD and 5.1 audio, but “up to” is a maximum, not a promise that every title will stream at that resolution or on every device.
Actual playback depends on the title, television, streaming device, app version, network conditions, and regional or account support. A 4K plan cannot make an HD-only title 4K, and a television or streaming stick without the required capability cannot display the plan maximum. Check the specifications of your particular TV and device before paying for a higher tier.
If a television lacks a supported app or suitable 4K playback, a compatible 4K streaming media player may be useful. Neither service requires you to buy one. Verify compatibility among the player, TV, app, network, and US region; do not assume that any generic player supports every plan feature.

Offline downloads: which service lets you watch without internet?
Netflix downloads
Netflix lists downloads on supported devices with a plan-dependent device count: two supported devices for Standard with ads and Standard, and six for Premium. Download availability remains title- and device-dependent, so a download icon—not the subscription name alone—determines whether a specific program can be saved.
Hulu downloads
Hulu downloads require the eligible Premium plan and a supported mobile device. Hulu says select shows and movies can be downloaded; add-on shows and certain Live TV on-demand content cannot be downloaded. A household that needs travel viewing should check the download icon for each title before leaving Wi-Fi and confirm that its phone or tablet is supported.
Neither service’s download feature should be treated as a permanent copy. Downloads can have expiration, licensing, device, or account restrictions. Open the app before a trip, update it, sign in, and test one episode under the same account that will be used offline.

Does Hulu have live TV?
Yes. Hulu + Live TV is a separate subscription family that combines live channels with Hulu-related library access and, on listed bundles, Disney+ and ESPN Select. The cited page lists:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →| Live option | Price shown | What the listing says |

| Premium Hulu + Live TV with Disney+ Premium and ESPN Select | $109.99/month | Premium Hulu library component plus the listed bundle components |
| Live TV Only | $98.99/month | Does not include Hulu’s streaming library or Disney+ |
Live programming has its own advertising and availability constraints. Local channels, regional sports, channel lineups, DVR terms, and screen limits can vary by location and plan. Review the channel lineup for your ZIP code and the recording limits before subscribing. Do not buy Live TV Only expecting access to the ordinary Hulu on-demand catalog.
If you only want next-day episodes or Hulu films, standalone Hulu is the relevant comparison. If you need live broadcasts, compare the full Hulu + Live TV bill—including any screen add-on—with other live-TV services and with the cost of the individual channels your household actually watches.
Catalog choice: use a must-watch list, not a brand reputation
The supplied plan information does not establish that either service has a categorically larger or better catalog. Libraries change, titles can be licensed differently by region, and an apparent catalog advantage is worthless if the specific series your household follows is missing.
- Write down five to ten must-watch titles, including any current-season episodes, children’s programs, films, and live events.
- Search each service’s current US catalog while signed out or using the service’s public availability information. Check the exact version of a title, not merely a similarly named film.
- Mark titles that are exclusive to one service, available only on a higher tier, or unavailable on an ad-supported plan.
- Decide which titles justify a full-year subscription and which could be watched during a one-month rotation.
This method prevents a low introductory price from deciding the purchase when the household’s actual viewing is concentrated on one platform.

Choose Netflix Standard with ads when
- Your priority titles are available on Netflix’s ad tier.
- You need 1080p and two simultaneous devices but do not need offline downloads on more than two supported devices.
- You accept commercial breaks and the possibility that some licensed titles are unavailable on the ad plan.
- The $8.99 monthly US rate is lower than the Hulu option you are otherwise considering, after matching billing periods and features.
Choose Netflix Standard when
- You want Netflix’s two-device, 1080p configuration without the ad-supported experience.
- Your household does not need Premium’s four streams, 4K HDR, spatial audio, or six-device download allowance.
- The Netflix catalog, rather than live channels, drives the decision.
Choose Netflix Premium when
- Four simultaneous streams solve a real household conflict.
- Your TV, receiver, and network support 4K HDR and spatial audio, and the titles you watch offer those formats.
- Several supported mobile devices need Netflix downloads.
- Eligible extra-member arrangements matter under Netflix’s household rules.
Choose standalone Hulu (With Ads) when
- Hulu has the current episodes or films your household watches most.
- You can tolerate ads and do not need offline downloads.
- The $12.49 monthly or $124.99 annual US price fits after you compare the full year and Hulu’s exact device rules.
Choose Hulu Premium when
- You want downloads of eligible Hulu titles on supported mobile devices.
- You prefer no ads in most of the on-demand library and accept the short rights-related ads that can surround a few programs.
- You do not need live channels; Premium library access does not make live programming commercial-free.
Choose Hulu + Live TV when
- Live news, sports, broadcast stations, or linear channels are a core requirement.
- You have checked the local channel lineup, DVR terms, screen rules, and the total monthly bill.
- You understand whether your selected bundle includes the Hulu library, Disney+, and ESPN Select, or whether you are buying Live TV Only.

Assuming “no ads” means every Hulu program is uninterrupted
Hulu identifies a small rights-related exception in its Premium library, and live or linear programming carries ads. Check the program type before paying for Premium solely to remove commercials.
Paying for 4K without compatible equipment
Confirm that the television, streaming device, title, app, and network support the required format. The plan maximum alone does not guarantee 4K playback.

A five-minute checkout checklist
- Confirm that every must-watch title is currently available in the US and on the tier you selected.
- Count the maximum number of simultaneous streams needed during your busiest evening.
- Choose the ad level deliberately, including Hulu’s rights-related and live-TV exceptions.
- Check whether anyone needs offline viewing, then verify supported devices and title-level download eligibility.
- Match the plan’s resolution and audio maximum to your actual TV, player, receiver, and network.
- For Hulu + Live TV, enter your location and inspect local channels, sports availability, DVR terms, screen limits, and bundle contents.
- Compare the recurring monthly or annual cost, not only a promotional first bill.
- Read the account-sharing, extra-member, cancellation, and renewal terms shown immediately before payment.
Bottom line for a US household
Netflix is the better fit when its must-watch catalog and a specific Netflix tier’s stream, quality, and download limits match the way your household watches. Standalone Hulu is the better fit when Hulu’s current library is decisive and its ad-supported or Premium terms suit your budget. Hulu + Live TV wins only for a household that genuinely needs live channels and has checked the local lineup and complete recurring cost.
Because no catalog snapshot or price is permanent, make the final choice from the titles your household wants this month, the number of screens it uses at once, and the exact offer displayed at signup.
