There is no universal winner. Choose Netflix for the broadest general-purpose mix and flexible household viewing, Disney+ for Disney, Pixar, Marvel and Star Wars families that need strong controls, or Max for HBO- and Warner-style prestige shows, select live sports and premium audio-visual features. Your country, tolerance for ads, number of simultaneous viewers, need for downloads, and compatible 4K equipment matter more than any single “best” list.
The prices below are not a single-market comparison: the Netflix and Max figures are from United States plan pages, while the Disney+ figures are from New Zealand. Plan names, catalogs and sports rights can change, so treat the figures as a 2026 snapshot and verify the local signup page before paying.

For a four-person household that regularly watches four different programs at once, start with a four-stream plan rather than an ad tier with two streams. If everyone watches together on one television, simultaneous-stream limits matter much less than the catalog and picture quality you actually use.

Netflix’s official US plan page lists these monthly prices. No annual Netflix price is stated on that page.

Netflix’s household rule is explicit: an account cannot be shared outside the household, defined as devices connected to the internet at the main residence where you watch Netflix. The paid extra-member options are therefore different from simply giving the password to people in another home.
Max plans in the United States
The official US Max page lists the following prices before taxes. Annual prices are shown where Max publishes them.

Max’s plan documentation says, “Live Sports is included with the Standard and Premium plans.” The listed examples include MLB, NHL, NCAA Men’s March Madness, U.S. Soccer and premier cycling events. Availability is tied to the rights and location of the account, so do not assume every event is available in every market.

These figures are New Zealand dollars, not US dollars. Disney+ states that the page information was correct as at 21 April 2026 and that availability varies by region.

Do not convert these New Zealand prices into a supposed worldwide ranking without checking your own country’s page. Taxes, currencies, billing partners and local rights can all change the result.
What each service is best at
Netflix: the flexible all-rounder
Netflix is the safest default when a household has no single dominant genre. Its three US tiers let you trade ads and price against picture quality, streams and downloads. Standard with ads and Standard both allow two devices and 1080p; Premium doubles the simultaneous streams to four and adds 4K Ultra HD with HDR.

Premium is the strongest fit for a busy household with compatible 4K televisions or monitors in more than one room. Six download devices also help travelers or family members who need offline viewing. The upgrade is less compelling if your screens are 1080p, your broadband connection cannot sustain 4K, or everyone normally watches on one screen.

Netflix’s sharing policy should be part of the decision, not an afterthought. The service defines a household around the main residence and says accounts cannot be shared outside it. Standard includes one extra-member slot and Premium allows up to two, giving legitimate ways to add people who live elsewhere when the billing setup supports it.
Disney+: the family and franchise specialist
Disney+ concentrates its identity around named brands rather than a general “something for everyone” promise: Disney, Pixar, Star Wars, Marvel, National Geographic, FX and ESPN are listed as destinations. That concentration is valuable when children or franchise fans make up most viewing hours. It is less persuasive if your household rarely watches those libraries and wants a constantly changing mix of unrelated genres.
Disney+ documents ratings filters, profile PIN protection and Junior Mode. Those controls let an adult keep a child’s profile within an age range while leaving an adult profile unrestricted. Disney+ also states that multiple household members can stream at the same time; the cited plan table sets the practical ceiling at two streams on Standard With Ads and Standard, or four on Premium.
Premium is the Disney+ choice for a 4K home theater: the New Zealand page lists up to 4K UHD/HDR, Dolby Atmos and downloads on up to 10 devices. The ad tiers can be cheaper, but Disney+ notes that ads may appear in live or linear programming and sports. Check the local plan description if avoiding interruptions is essential.
Max: prestige viewing, Warner titles and selected live sports
Max (the current HBO Max-branded service) is aimed at households that value HBO- and Warner-style series and films, with sports as an additional differentiator. Standard and Premium include the selected live-sports package; Premium is the only Max tier in the cited US lineup with four general simultaneous streams, and sports viewing on it is limited to two devices.

Premium also adds 4K Ultra HD, Dolby Atmos and 100 downloads. Standard has 30 downloads and two streams. That makes Premium’s extra monthly cost easier to justify for a large household with a compatible sound system, a 4K display and frequent offline viewing. If you only watch on a 1080p television and do not follow the included sports, Standard can deliver the same two-stream capacity for less.
Max’s US page references bundles combining Disney+, Hulu and Max, plus provider routes through Max.com, the Amazon Appstore, Prime Video Channels, Roku, Samsung, Xfinity and Xumo. Bundle prices and eligibility vary, so verify the offer in your country and through the billing provider before treating a bundle as cheaper.
Compare the features that actually change the choice
Ads and missing titles
Ad-supported plans lower the entry price but introduce commercial interruptions and can have catalog limitations. Netflix specifically warns that some titles may be unavailable on its ad tier. Disney+ notes ads in live or linear programming and sports. Max’s Basic with Ads is the least expensive cited Max option, but the supplied US plan page does not state a download allowance or 4K/Dolby Atmos support for it.
If children watch independently, ask whether interruptions are acceptable during a movie. If the answer is no, compare the ad-free Standard tiers in your own market rather than comparing one service’s ad tier with another service’s premium tier.
Simultaneous streams and household size

“Number of profiles” is not the same as “number of simultaneous streams.” A plan can let you create several profiles while still stopping playback when the stream ceiling is reached.
4K, HDR and immersive audio
Choose a premium tier only when the entire playback chain supports it: a 4K display, an app or streaming device that can output the format, a suitable HDMI path and enough sustained bandwidth. Netflix Premium lists 4K Ultra HD and HDR; Max Premium lists 4K Ultra HD and Dolby Atmos; Disney+ Premium lists up to 4K UHD/HDR and Dolby Atmos in the New Zealand example.

“Up to 4K” does not mean every title is available in that format. Resolution and audio can vary by program, device and region. A 4K plan cannot make an older television display 4K, and a television’s built-in speakers cannot reproduce the full benefit of Dolby Atmos.

Download limits are not a guarantee that every title can be saved. Rights windows, device storage, account status and periodic online checks can affect offline playback. Download a test episode before a long trip instead of assuming the whole catalog is portable.
Sports and event availability
Max is the only service in this comparison whose cited Standard and Premium plans explicitly include select live sports. The examples are MLB, NHL, NCAA Men’s March Madness, U.S. Soccer and premier cycling events. Premium’s four-stream allowance drops to two for sports, an important distinction for households planning simultaneous games.
Disney+ lists ESPN among its content destinations, but the cited page does not promise a universal live-sports package for every country or plan. Netflix’s cited plan page does not establish a comparable sports entitlement. Check the event schedule and blackout rules for your location before subscribing for one competition.

For children
Disney+ has the clearest documented child-safety toolkit in the supplied information: ratings filters, profile PINs and Junior Mode. Set up an adult profile first, create a child profile, apply the rating limit and protect profile switching with a PIN. Then test the profile as a child would, because a control that is enabled but easy to bypass is not much protection.

For people in different homes
Netflix explicitly prohibits sharing outside the household and offers extra-member slots on Standard and Premium. Disney+’s cited wording concerns simultaneous streaming by members of the household, not a blanket promise that an account may be shared across residences. Max documents an extra-member add-on for WarnerMedia-billed subscribers. Billing route and country can affect whether that add-on appears, so confirm eligibility in the account page.
A practical decision process
- Write down the real viewing pattern. Count the maximum number of screens that play at the same time, not the number of people who have profiles.
- Pick the content identity. Choose Disney+ when its franchise ecosystem supplies most of your watchlist, Max when HBO/Warner-style programming or the listed sports matters, and Netflix when tastes are widely mixed.
- Set a quality floor. If 4K HDR or Dolby Atmos is required, remove tiers that do not list those features. Confirm that your television, audio system and network support them.
- Decide whether ads are acceptable. Compare ad-free plans if interruptions or missing ad-tier titles would cause cancellations. Otherwise, compare only local ad tiers and their stream limits.
- Check offline needs. Frequent travelers should favor a plan with a stated, sufficient device or download allowance, then verify that the titles they need can actually be downloaded.
- Check the household rule. If a viewer lives elsewhere, price the service’s permitted extra-member option instead of assuming password sharing is allowed.
- Normalize the bill. Compare prices in the same currency, include taxes where applicable, and compare monthly with annual billing on equal terms. The US and New Zealand figures in this article are not interchangeable.
- Recheck volatile details. Before checkout, confirm the local catalog, sports rights, plan name, price, stream limit and bundle terms.
Common household scenarios
Two adults and children sharing one home
Disney+ Standard is a logical starting point in the New Zealand example when the franchise catalog and parental controls are the main draw. Move to Premium if four people often watch at once or if the home theater needs 4K, HDR and Atmos. Netflix Standard with ads can be cheaper in the cited US lineup, but check whether the children’s desired titles are available on that tier and whether interruptions are acceptable.
Four adults with different tastes
Netflix Premium is the clearest single-service fit among the cited plans: four simultaneous devices, 4K HDR and six download devices. Start with Max Standard or Premium because both cited tiers include select live sports. Pick Premium only if four general streams, 4K, Atmos or 100 downloads justify it; remember that sports themselves are limited to two simultaneous devices. Confirm that the specific league and events are available in your location.
A frequent traveler
Compare the stated download allowances first: Netflix Premium lists six devices, Max Standard 30 downloads and Premium 100, and Disney+ Premium up to 10 devices where supported. Test downloads over Wi-Fi before departure and leave room for renewals or expiry checks.
What can change after you subscribe?
- Catalogs and rights: A show, film or sports event can leave or become region-limited without the plan price changing.
- Plan labels and prices: Services can rename tiers, change annual discounts or introduce new ad rules.
- Device support: 4K, HDR, Atmos and downloads depend on the app version, device model and title.
- Billing route: Direct billing and provider billing can expose different bundles, taxes or extra-member options.
- Household enforcement: Sharing checks and permitted extra members can vary by service and market.
Save the local plan page or confirmation email showing the features you paid for. If a capability is important, verify it in the account settings and on the device you will actually use.
