Netflix announced on October 14, 2026, that it plans to eliminate roughly 1,000 positions—about 6% of its global workforce. Why is Netflix cutting jobs while it is profitable?
Co-CEOs Greg Peters and Ted Sarandos said Netflix needed to be disciplined about where it prioritizes people and resources while investing in future growth and high-impact improvements to its service. They wrote, “Decisions like these are never easy, and we don’t take them lightly.”

Reporting places the cuts in a more competitive streaming market. Netflix faces pressure from established entertainment companies and YouTube as viewers, advertisers and content spending compete across more services. The company remained profitable, but its reported third-quarter forecast was below Wall Street expectations, adding pressure to improve efficiency and focus investment.

Netflix’s stated explanation is forward-looking: concentrate resources on areas it believes will produce the greatest future impact, rather than claim that the business is currently losing money.

In 2022, Netflix cut about 450 jobs in two rounds after reporting its first subscriber loss in more than a decade. The 2026 plan is therefore more than twice that combined total, based on the approximate figures reported.
What do Netflix’s financial results show?
Netflix reported second-quarter 2026 profit of $3.4 billion and revenue of $12.56 billion. Those figures represented year-over-year increases of 9% for profit and 13% for revenue, respectively. The results show a company still generating substantial earnings and sales, while its outlook and competitive environment are driving changes in staffing and resource allocation.

Quarterly results are not a guarantee that every division or role will expand. Management can use a profitable period to restructure before expected market conditions become more difficult, especially when it is funding product improvements and other long-term projects.

Netflix says the resource shift is intended to support future growth and high-impact service improvements. The announcement does not identify particular features, products or release dates, so viewers should not assume that any named Netflix feature will be cancelled or accelerated because of the layoffs.
