Netflix announced on October 14, 2026, that it will eliminate about 6% of its worldwide workforce—roughly 1,000 positions—in the company’s largest staff reduction since 2022. Product, technology, legal and human-resources teams are expected to be among the functions most affected.
What Netflix announced
The reduction is global and is measured against Netflix’s worldwide employee base. Regulatory filings showed about 16,000 full-time employees at the end of 2025. Six percent of that base is approximately 960 positions, which accounts for the widely reported figure of about 1,000 jobs.

Why Netflix says it is making the cuts
Co-CEOs Ted Sarandos and Greg Peters described the business as strong but said Netflix needs to concentrate people and money on its highest-priority opportunities. Their employee memo said the company must be “disciplined about where we prioritize our people and resources” and continue investing in “high impact areas to improve our service.”

That language frames the action as a resource-allocation and organizational-prioritization decision rather than an emergency response to a sudden collapse in demand.

What the rationale means in practice
- Some work may be consolidated or stopped as Netflix narrows its list of priorities.
- Teams that support products, infrastructure, legal matters and internal operations may be reorganized around fewer initiatives.
- Investment can be redirected toward projects management believes will have the greatest effect on member experience and growth.
Netflix has not publicly released a full list of eliminated roles, locations or severance terms in the announcement summarized here. Individual effects may therefore vary by country, employment contract and business unit.
Is Netflix in financial trouble?
The layoff announcement does not coincide with a reported quarterly loss. Associated Press reporting on Netflix’s second quarter of 2026 cited net income of $3.4 billion and revenue of $12.56 billion. Profit was up 9% and revenue 13% from the same quarter a year earlier.

Those results show that a profitable company can still reduce headcount. Businesses sometimes cut positions while earnings are rising to change how work is organized, slow the growth of operating costs, or move spending toward selected products and markets. Netflix’s stated explanation emphasizes focus and future growth, not an inability to pay its bills.
Which departments are being cut?
Netflix specifically identified product, technology, legal and human resources as the areas expected to be most affected. These groups cover both customer-facing development and corporate support, so the announcement should not be interpreted as applying only to software engineering or only to content operations.

Product teams typically define and manage features across Netflix’s applications and viewing experience. Reductions here could reflect fewer simultaneous initiatives or a decision to combine product responsibilities.
Technology
Technology includes the systems and engineering work that support streaming, applications, data and internal platforms. The announcement does not say which technology specialties or offices will see the largest impact.

Legal and human resources
Legal and human-resources reductions indicate that the changes extend into corporate functions as well as product development. The available announcement does not specify whether particular legal practices, recruiting groups or regional HR teams are affected.

Coverage identifies 2022 as the last major Netflix layoff period and describes the October 2026 action as the largest reduction since then. The available figures do not establish a like-for-like percentage, job total or department breakdown for every 2022 round, so a precise numerical comparison would be misleading.

The key distinction is timing and stated context: the 2026 announcement came while Netflix was reporting strong quarterly profit and revenue growth, and management characterized it as making focused choices about resources.
