If Netflix subtitles won’t turn on, start playback, open Audio & Subtitles, and select an available language. If the language is missing, check the profile’s language preferences and whether the title is downloaded. If you selected subtitles but can’t see them, try the same title on another device; if they appear only intermittently, use the troubleshooting steps for your device.
First, identify what is going wrong
The fix depends on whether the controls are missing, the language is absent, the selected subtitles are invisible, or they appear intermittently. Check the same title on another device, and note whether the problem affects one language or all languages. That helps distinguish a language or title limitation from a device problem.
- Can’t find the subtitle controls: Open the playback controls using the method for your device.
- Your preferred language isn’t listed: Check profile language settings and whether the title is downloaded.
- The language is listed, but subtitles don’t appear: Try the title on another device.
- Subtitles appear and disappear: Follow the network or device troubleshooting steps below.
- Subtitles are on but hard to read: Adjust their appearance settings.
How to open Netflix’s subtitle controls
Start playing a title, then open the playback controls. The gesture or button depends on the device:
- Phone, tablet, or computer: Tap or click the screen.
- Smart TV, Blu-ray player, cable box, game system, or streaming player: Press the up or down arrow on the remote.
- Apple TV: Swipe up or press the up arrow.
Choose Audio & Subtitles, then select a listed language. If Other is offered, select it to view additional options. On some TVs, language choices appear along the bottom of the screen without the same icon shown on other devices. Netflix’s instructions are in its subtitle and audio guide.

If your preferred language is missing
Check the language settings for the current profile
Netflix lets you choose audio and subtitle languages in profile language settings. The route varies by device. On a TV, Netflix’s language guide says to start a title, pause it, open the player controls, select Other, and choose languages for audio and subtitles. See Netflix’s instructions for changing language for the available routes.
Check whether the title is downloaded
For downloads, Netflix shows the two most relevant languages. If you’re connected to Wi-Fi and watching a title that is also downloaded, delete the download and reopen the audio and subtitle choices to see whether more languages are available. This does not guarantee that a particular language is available for that title.

Consider the title and its availability
Subtitle availability can depend on your location, profile preferences, device support, content licensing, and agreements for a show. A language track may also be missing from an episode or season that is still being released; weekly or rolling releases may not have all tracks until they are complete. Netflix explains these limitations in its guide to language availability for subtitles and audio.
Check whether profile preferences are being saved
Preferences can behave differently depending on the profile and title. Netflix says subtitle and audio preferences are not saved for most Kids titles watched from an adult profile. If a preferred audio language keeps resetting, its how-to page suggests playing a title rated Teens or above for two to three minutes to save the preference. These are separate behaviors: the guidance about saving a preference concerns audio language, while the Kids-title note covers subtitle and audio preferences.

If subtitles are selected but don’t appear
Try the same title with the same subtitle language on another device. Netflix recommends this when a language is offered but not displayed. Its guidance says some devices made before 2014 may not support Arabic, Chinese, Hebrew, Hindi, Japanese, Korean, Thai, Romanian, or Vietnamese subtitles. The year is only a general guide: some newer devices may also lack support. Check Netflix’s language availability guidance for this compatibility note.
If subtitles appear intermittently or fail during playback
Netflix says selected subtitles that are invisible or intermittent during otherwise successful playback may indicate a device issue. Use the steps for your device rather than assuming the subtitle language itself is unavailable.

On Android: check the connection
- Check whether your network can play Netflix.
- If you changed connection settings, restore them to their defaults. This includes custom modem, VPN or proxy, and DNS settings.
- Improve the Wi-Fi signal by moving the device or router closer together. Place the router in an open, elevated space.
- If the problem continues, contact your internet service provider. Netflix says the provider can check for outages, router or modem problems, and network settings.
On a smart TV: restart the TV and network equipment
- Turn off or unplug the TV.
- Unplug the modem and, if separate, the router. Leave them unplugged for 30 seconds.
- Reconnect the modem and wait until its indicator lights stop blinking.
- If you have a separate router, reconnect it and wait for its indicator lights to stop blinking.
- Turn the TV on and try Netflix again.
For other device types, Netflix’s “Subtitles won’t turn on” troubleshooting page directs viewers to contact support; it does not give equivalent steps for every device.

If subtitles are on but hard to read
Subtitle appearance settings control style, not whether a subtitle language is available. Netflix supports changes to font, size, shadow, and background color, although the options available can depend on the device and language.
