Short answer: Standard with ads is the lowest-cost choice at $8.99 a month. Standard costs $19.99 for the same 1080p quality and two simultaneous streams without regular show and movie ads. Premium costs $26.99 and adds four simultaneous streams, 4K HDR, six download devices, spatial audio, and up to two extra-member slots.

Netflix’s current US plan table lists three consumer plans. Prices below are monthly and were listed by Netflix in 2026; taxes can apply, and a package or add-on purchased through another company can have different pricing or eligibility.

The “simultaneous viewing” number is the number of supported devices that can stream at the same time. It is separate from the number of profiles or devices on which you can sign in. Download limits likewise refer to supported devices, not the number of individual episodes or films.
What each Netflix plan is designed for
Standard with ads: cheapest way to watch
At $8.99 per month, Standard with ads is aimed at households that prioritize the lowest recurring price and can tolerate interruptions. It provides 1080p video, two simultaneous streams, and downloads on two supported devices, so its core technical limits match the ad-free Standard plan.

Commercial breaks appear in most television shows and movies. Netflix says viewers should expect a few short ads per hour, placed before and during select titles where possible at natural plot breaks. Ads cannot be skipped or fast-forwarded while a show or movie is playing. A small number of titles are unavailable because of licensing restrictions; those titles display a lock icon rather than playing on the ad-supported experience.
The ad tier is offered in the United States, Australia, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Mexico, South Korea, Spain, and the United Kingdom. Availability can differ when signup and billing are handled by a third-party partner or package.
Standard: ad-free 1080p for two streams
Standard costs $19.99 per month and removes regular ads from shows and movies while retaining 1080p resolution, two simultaneous supported devices, and downloads on two supported devices. It is the practical middle option when interruptions are unacceptable but four streams and 4K video are unnecessary.

Premium: four streams, 4K HDR, and more sharing capacity
Premium costs $26.99 per month. It supports four simultaneous devices, 4K Ultra HD with HDR, downloads on six supported devices, spatial audio, and up to two extra members. Choose it when several people may watch at once, your television and connection can take advantage of 4K HDR, or the additional download and extra-member capacity matters.
Premium’s 4K label does not make every title 4K; the program or film, the playback device, and the viewing setup must support the format. Likewise, spatial audio is an included capability, not a guarantee that every title has a spatial-audio mix.
How ads work on the ad-supported experience
When ads appear
Netflix describes the experience as a few short ads per hour. Ads can run before a title starts and during selected shows and movies. Netflix aims to place mid-roll breaks at natural points in the story, but the breaks are still interruptions and their frequency can vary by title.

Ads cannot be skipped or fast-forwarded during shows and movies. If you regularly pause, rewind, or watch long-form programs without interruptions, that restriction is the main practical difference between Standard with ads and Standard.

Titles that are unavailable
Most of the catalog is available, but licensing restrictions prevent a small number of movies and shows from appearing on the ad-supported plan. Netflix marks an unavailable title with a lock icon. This is different from a title that is temporarily unavailable in your country or leaving the service: the lock specifically indicates that the ad-supported rights do not cover it.
Kids profiles, games, and live events
Netflix says ads are not currently shown on Kids profiles or in Netflix games. Live events can contain commercial breaks on every plan. For a live event that later becomes a replay, ad-free plans remove the commercial breaks from the replay after the live broadcast.
Choosing a plan by household need
Pick Standard with ads if price comes first
- You want the lowest listed US price, $8.99 monthly.
- 1080p Full HD is sufficient for your screens.
- No more than two supported devices need to stream simultaneously.
- Two download devices are enough.
- You accept unskippable ad breaks and the possibility that a small number of titles are locked.
Pick Standard if you want ad-free viewing without upgrading hardware
- You want the same two-stream and 1080p limits as the ad tier.
- You do not want regular ads in shows and movies.
- Two download devices meet your offline needs.
- You need one eligible extra-member slot.
Pick Premium for capacity, picture quality, or extra members
- Up to four people may watch at the same time.
- Your display and viewing setup support 4K HDR and you value that improvement.
- More than two devices need downloads; Premium supports six.
- You want spatial audio where supported.
- You need up to two eligible extra-member slots.
A simple decision order is to check simultaneous streams first, then extra-member needs, then whether 4K HDR matters. If all three fit within Standard, the ad question determines whether the $8.99 plan is acceptable; if any requires Premium, the higher plan is the relevant comparison.

Streaming and download limits in practice
Simultaneous viewing
Two simultaneous devices are included with both Standard with ads and Standard. Premium raises that limit to four. A third stream will exceed the Standard allowance even if many phones, televisions, and tablets are signed in to the account. Stopping one stream frees a slot; changing profiles does not create another simultaneous stream.

Offline downloads
Standard with ads and Standard allow downloads on two supported devices. Premium allows downloads on six supported devices. The limit concerns the number of devices holding downloads, so a household should count the phones and tablets that need offline viewing rather than the number of people who use them. Download availability can also depend on title rights and the device’s support for Netflix downloads.
Resolution and equipment
Both Standard plans top out at 1080p Full HD. Premium includes 4K Ultra HD and HDR. To see Premium’s higher resolution, the title, television or monitor, playback app or device, and connection must all support the format; a 4K-capable subscription alone cannot turn a non-4K stream into 4K.
Household sharing and extra members
Netflix defines a household around devices connected to the internet at the main residence. Its Help Center states that an account cannot be shared directly with people outside that household. A person living elsewhere must be added as an extra member where Netflix makes that option available.

Netflix lists the extra-member prices above for the US, but eligibility can depend on the account, country, package, and billing arrangement. An extra member is not the same as another simultaneous stream on the primary household allowance; the member uses a separately managed access arrangement under Netflix’s rules.

Billing, taxes, and availability caveats
Netflix bills monthly on the date you start the subscription. Netflix does not offer an annual or lifetime plan. The final charge can include applicable taxes. Prices and features can differ when Netflix is obtained through a mobile, broadband, pay-TV, or other partner package, and some third-party billing partners do not support the ad-supported plan.
The former Basic plan has been discontinued. If an older article or account screen refers to Basic, use the current plan choices shown in your Netflix account rather than relying on that outdated description.
How to change plans without guessing
- Sign in to Netflix and open the account or membership management page.
- Review the plan currently shown, including its stream, download, resolution, and ad terms.
- Open the option to change or manage your plan and compare the available choices for your billing method and country.
- Select the plan that matches your required stream count, video format, download-device count, and extra-member capacity.
- Confirm the change and read the effective-date and billing information Netflix displays. Partner-billed accounts may need to make the change through the partner instead.
Netflix’s displayed options are the authoritative check for your account because packages, add-ons, taxes, and regional availability can alter what you can select.

- Confusing profiles with streams: profiles personalize recommendations; they do not increase the two- or four-device simultaneous limit.
- Assuming “ad-free” covers live broadcasts: live events may contain commercial breaks on every plan, even though replays can be ad-free on ad-free experiences.
- Assuming every title is on the ad tier: licensing restrictions leave a small number of locked titles.
- Counting downloads as streams: the download-device limit applies to offline storage, while simultaneous viewing applies to active playback.
- Choosing Premium for a 4K television without checking the title: 4K and HDR require compatible content and equipment.
- Sharing a password with someone at another address: Netflix requires people outside the household to use an eligible extra-member arrangement.
- Comparing sticker prices without checking billing: taxes and partner packages can change the amount charged or the plans available.
What Netflix’s ad strategy tells you—and what it does not
Netflix said in its 2024 shareholder letter that advertising serves two strategic purposes: enabling lower consumer prices and creating an additional revenue and profit stream. In that same historical context, Netflix reported that more than 45% of signups in markets with ads chose the ad tier in the second quarter of 2024. That figure describes Q2 2024 signups, not the share of all subscribers and not a current 2026 result.
Final decision
For a price-sensitive household that accepts interruptions, Standard with ads delivers the essential Netflix experience at $8.99 with 1080p, two simultaneous streams, and two download devices. Standard is the focused upgrade for ad-free 1080p viewing and one extra-member slot. Premium earns its price when four simultaneous viewers, 4K HDR, six download devices, spatial audio, or up to two extra members are requirements rather than nice-to-haves.
