Netflix has three US plans: Standard with ads at $8.99 per month, Standard at $19.99, and Premium at $26.99 (prices checked October 13, 2026). Standard with ads is the budget choice if you accept commercial breaks, a small number of locked titles, and stricter downloads. Standard removes ads while keeping 1080p and two simultaneous streams. Premium is for households that can use 4K HDR, Netflix spatial audio, and four simultaneous streams.
Netflix displays localized prices after you select a country, and prices, package terms, and extra-member eligibility can differ outside the United States. Check the plan page in your Netflix account before subscribing.

What are the Netflix plans?
The current US-dollar comparison is below. “Simultaneous streams” means how many devices can play at the same time; it is not the number of phones, TVs, or computers that can be signed in. Download-device limits are a separate allowance.

These are Netflix product limits and listed plan features, not independent measurements of picture quality or streaming reliability. Netflix bills monthly on the date you joined. It does not offer annual, multi-month, or lifetime memberships, and says members can change plans or cancel online.

How much is Netflix per month?
US monthly rates
For the United States, the prices checked October 13, 2026, are $8.99 for Standard with ads, $19.99 for Standard, and $26.99 for Premium. The figures are recurring monthly rates, not introductory offers in the cited plan comparison. Your first and subsequent charges generally follow your signup date.
Why your price may differ
Netflix requires a country selection for localized details. A local currency, tax treatment, package arrangement, or third-party billing relationship can change the amount and available features. Netflix also warns that extra-member eligibility can vary by location or when Netflix is included in a package or add-on. Treat the US table as a reference for US accounts, not a worldwide price list.
Which Netflix plan has ads?
Standard with ads
Standard with ads includes commercial breaks in most TV shows and movies. Netflix describes a few short ads per hour, placed before or during selected titles. Some newly released movies may show ads only before playback. Ads cannot be skipped or fast-forwarded while a show or movie is playing, although you can pause playback.

A small number of movies and shows are unavailable on this tier because of licensing restrictions. Netflix marks those titles with a lock icon. The restriction is catalogue-specific and can change as licensing agreements change, so search for the shows you care about before choosing the cheaper plan.

Content that does not follow the usual ad pattern
Live events and special events may contain commercial breaks on any plan, including an ad-free plan. Ad-free plans remove commercial breaks from shows and movies but do not promise that every live event or other commercial-type programming will be interruption-free. Netflix says ads are not currently shown on Kids profiles or in Netflix games.
Device requirements for the ad experience
Some older app and device combinations do not support the ad-supported experience. Netflix provides an in-app Plan Compatibility check for this plan. Casting or mirroring from a mobile device to a TV is unavailable on the ad-supported experience, so verify compatibility if that is how you normally watch.
How many screens can watch Netflix at once?
Two streams on both Standard tiers
Standard with ads and Standard each allow two supported devices to stream simultaneously. Two people can watch different titles at the same time, but a third playback attempt will exceed the plan’s simultaneous-stream limit. The allowance does not describe how many devices can be registered or signed in.
Four streams on Premium
Premium raises the simultaneous limit to four supported devices. It is useful when more than two people in the household are likely to watch at once, such as during evenings when different rooms are using Netflix. Paying for Premium solely for additional sign-ins does not help if concurrent playback rarely exceeds two.

Household rules
Netflix defines a household around devices connected to the internet at the main residence where the account is watched. People outside that household are not automatically covered by a higher stream count. Where the account and market are eligible, the owner can add an extra member instead.
What does Netflix Premium add for 4K?
Premium is the only listed tier with 4K Ultra HD, HDR, and Netflix spatial audio. Those benefits matter only when the particular title is available in the format and your complete viewing setup supports it: a compatible display, app or player, connection, and audio equipment where relevant. Premium does not convert every catalogue item into 4K or HDR.
If your television is Full HD, your devices do not support HDR, or you normally use basic stereo speakers, Premium’s headline formats may provide little practical benefit. The plan can still be justified by four simultaneous streams or six download-supported devices, but those are separate reasons from resolution and audio.

The plan comparison lists downloads on two supported devices for Standard with ads and Standard, and six supported devices for Premium. This is a device allowance, not a promise that every title can be downloaded or that storage on the device is unlimited.

The ad-plan monthly cap
Netflix separately limits ad-supported plans to 15 total downloads per device per calendar month. The quota resets on the first day of each calendar month. Therefore, two download-capable devices do not mean unlimited downloads: each device is subject to its own monthly limit.
Automatic downloads
Netflix’s automatic Smart Downloads features, including Downloads for You and Download Next Episode, are unavailable on ad-supported plans. You can still use supported manual downloads within the plan’s device and monthly limits. Standard and Premium do not have the ad-plan restriction on those automatic features, subject to title, app, storage, and account conditions.
How extra members work
Eligibility and US pricing
Only Standard and Premium accounts can add an extra member. In the United States, Netflix lists an extra-member price of $7.99 per month with ads or $9.99 per month without ads. These amounts and eligibility rules can vary by market and by package.

An extra member has a separate account, password, and profile, while the primary account owner pays for and manages the slot. The extra member must be in the same country as the account owner. An ad-supported extra member is limited to 1080p video, has no spatial audio, one profile, one simultaneous device, and one download device, with a 15-download-per-calendar-month limit.

Important package limitation
Some accounts billed through packages or third parties cannot add extra members. Check the account’s membership page rather than assuming that the Standard or Premium label guarantees the option.

Choose Standard with ads when price is the priority
- You want the lowest listed monthly price in the US.
- You can accept a few short ads before or during selected titles.
- The shows and movies you care about are available without a lock icon.
- Your TV, player, and mobile-to-TV setup pass Netflix’s compatibility requirements.
- Two simultaneous streams and two download devices are enough, and the 15-download monthly cap per device is acceptable.
Check the catalogue and device compatibility before downgrading. A lower bill is not useful if a required title is locked or your normal casting method does not work.
Choose Standard for straightforward ad-free viewing
- You want ad-free shows, movies, and games without paying for 4K features.
- 1080p Full HD is sufficient for your screens.
- No more than two devices normally play at once.
- Two download-supported devices meet your travel or offline needs.
For many households with Full HD equipment and two viewers, Standard avoids the ad-plan restrictions without paying Premium’s higher price.

Choose Premium for a capable 4K household
- Your display and viewing chain support 4K Ultra HD and HDR, and the titles you watch offer those formats.
- You want Netflix spatial audio and have equipment that can use it.
- Three or four people may stream simultaneously.
- Six download-supported devices are useful.
- You may need up to two eligible extra-member slots.
Premium is not automatically better for every viewer. Its distinctive formats and larger limits have value only when your content, devices, and household usage can take advantage of them.
How to decide without overpaying
- Check your market. Open Netflix’s plan and pricing page while signed in, select your country, and record the local monthly prices and available options.
- Audit simultaneous use. Count the maximum number of people who genuinely watch at the same time, not everyone who has a profile or a signed-in device.
- Check essential titles. On Standard with ads, search for the movies and shows your household watches most. A lock icon indicates a licensing-related omission on that tier.
- Inspect your equipment. Confirm that your TV, streaming player, console, phone, tablet, or computer supports the selected experience. Use Netflix’s in-app compatibility check for the ad plan.
- Decide whether downloads are occasional or heavy. Compare the number of download devices with the ad plan’s 15-per-device monthly cap and its lack of Smart Downloads.
- Price extra members separately. If someone lives outside the household, verify same-country eligibility, package restrictions, and the applicable extra-member charge instead of relying on the base plan’s stream count.
Devices, compatibility, and common pitfalls
Netflix can be watched on supported internet-connected smart TVs, game consoles, streaming media players, cable boxes, phones, tablets, and computers. A small percentage of devices may not support every plan. Compatibility is especially important when moving to the ad-supported tier, because older app and device combinations may not support it and mobile casting or mirroring is unavailable.
- “Two devices” misunderstood: The number is simultaneous playback, not two total registered devices.
- Premium assumed to mean every title is 4K: Resolution and HDR depend on title availability and compatible equipment.
- Ad-free assumed to cover live events: Netflix may place commercial breaks in live or special events on any plan.
- Download allowance treated as unlimited: The ad tier has a separate 15-download-per-device calendar-month cap.
- Household sharing assumed to be unrestricted: Netflix’s household definition and extra-member rules still apply.
- Package billing overlooked: A third-party or bundled account may have different terms or may not support extra members.
Changing or cancelling a plan
Netflix says members can change plans or cancel online. Because billing is monthly on the signup date and there is no annual or lifetime option, review the effective date and next charge shown in your account before confirming a change. If you are switching from a package-billed membership, check the package provider’s instructions as well as Netflix’s account page.
Bottom line: which Netflix plan should you pick?
For the lowest US price, choose Standard with ads only after confirming that your must-watch titles, devices, and casting habits are compatible with its ads experience. Choose Standard when you want ad-free 1080p viewing and two simultaneous streams without needing Premium’s formats. Choose Premium when your household will use 4K HDR or spatial audio, needs more than two concurrent streams, wants six download devices, or can use eligible extra-member slots. Recheck the localized plan page at signup because prices and eligibility vary by market and package.
