Quick answer: Netflix’s US plans differ mainly by advertising, catalog access, picture and sound quality, simultaneous viewing, downloads, and extra-member support. Standard with ads costs the least at $8.99 per month but includes commercial breaks and may exclude some licensed titles. Standard costs $19.99 for ad-free 1080p viewing. Premium costs $26.99 and is the only listed tier with 4K Ultra HD, HDR, spatial audio, four concurrent streams, six download devices, and capacity for up to two extra members.
These figures are Netflix’s US consumer-plan details shown on October 15, 2026. Prices, taxes, bundles, add-ons, and eligibility can differ in other countries, so use the Netflix Plans and Pricing page for the account’s actual offer before subscribing or changing plans.

US Netflix plans at a glance
The table below brings together the limits Netflix lists for its US plans. “Simultaneous devices” means how many devices can stream at the same time; it is separate from the number of profiles or devices on which you can sign in. Download-device limits apply to supported offline downloads, not to ordinary streaming.
| Plan | Monthly price | Ads and catalog | Maximum simultaneous devices | Video quality | Download devices | Extra members |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Standard with ads | $8.99 | Ads; some titles may be unavailable because of licensing | 2 | 1080p (Full HD) | 2 | Not listed in the cited table |
| Standard | $19.99 | Ad-free movies, TV shows, and games | 2 | 1080p (Full HD) | 2 | Option to add 1 extra member |
| Premium | $26.99 | Ad-free movies, TV shows, and games | 4 | 4K (Ultra HD) plus HDR | 6 | Option to add up to 2 extra members; spatial audio |

What each Netflix plan is designed for
Standard with ads: lowest monthly price
Standard with ads is aimed at households that put the monthly bill first and are comfortable with advertising. Netflix describes an ad-supported experience as a way to watch at a lower price. The plan still provides Full HD resolution, so the compromise is not a reduction to standard-definition video. The trade-offs are commercial breaks during ordinary viewing and the possibility that a particular movie or show is unavailable because Netflix does not have ad-supported rights for that title in your market.
This tier works best when one or two people usually watch within the household, 1080p is sufficient, and missing an occasional licensed title is acceptable. Check the catalog before committing if a specific series or film is the reason you are subscribing. Netflix’s advertising help page explains the ad-supported limitations and notes that some live events, special events, or new features may include commercial breaks across plans.
Standard: ad-free Full HD
Standard removes ordinary ads while retaining 1080p Full HD. It supports the same maximum number of concurrent streams and download devices shown for the ad-supported tier, making it a straightforward fit for a one- or two-screen household that does not need 4K or HDR.

If you watch mostly on phones, tablets, laptops, or a conventional Full HD television, Standard avoids paying for Premium capabilities your equipment may not display. Netflix lists an option to add one extra member to this plan; the extra member uses a separate account and password and is paid for by the inviting account holder.

Premium: highest quality and capacity
Premium is the only tier in the cited US table with 4K Ultra HD and HDR. It also adds spatial audio, permits four concurrent streams, and raises the offline-download allowance to six supported devices. Those additions matter when several people watch at once, a compatible 4K/HDR television or monitor is central to the setup, or multiple viewers need content available without an internet connection.
Premium can also accommodate up to two extra members under Netflix’s listed rules. That capacity does not turn the account into an unrestricted family subscription: household-sharing rules still apply, and each extra member receives an individual account and password.
How the limits affect everyday viewing
Simultaneous streams are about active playback
The stream limit controls concurrent playback, not how many devices are registered or how many profiles exist. For example, a household can have televisions, phones, and tablets signed in, but only the plan’s listed number of devices can actively play Netflix at one time. If a fourth person starts playback on a plan that allows only two streams, someone else may need to stop watching before the new stream works.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsChoose based on your busiest normal period rather than the number of people who ever use the account. A couple who rarely watches at the same time may not benefit from Premium’s higher capacity; a household with several simultaneous viewers may find the lower tiers restrictive even when Full HD quality is adequate.
Rank #3

Downloads are a separate offline allowance
Netflix lists download capacity by supported device. Standard with ads and Standard each allow downloads on two devices, while Premium allows six. This limit concerns offline copies saved through Netflix’s supported apps; it does not limit ordinary online streaming or the number of devices that can be signed in.
Downloads are useful for travel, commuting, or unreliable internet. If different household members routinely prepare phones or tablets at the same time, compare the download-device column rather than assuming that a plan with more streams also has more offline capacity. Premium is the only listed tier that expands both capacities together.
Resolution and HDR require compatible equipment
Standard with ads and Standard top out at 1080p Full HD in Netflix’s plan descriptions. Premium adds 4K Ultra HD and HDR. To see that higher-quality output, the viewing chain must support it: the display, connected streaming device, and relevant settings all need to be compatible. On a Full HD screen, Premium’s 4K entitlement cannot be displayed as 4K, although its additional streams, downloads, and spatial-audio features may still be useful.
Spatial audio is listed with Premium and is intended for compatible playback equipment or listening setups. It is an audio feature, not a replacement for 4K; decide separately whether your home theater, television, headphones, or sound system can make use of it.

Ads and title availability are different issues
Ad-free plans remove ordinary advertising from Netflix movies, shows, and games, but Netflix warns that live events, special events, or other new features may include commercial breaks on any plan. Conversely, the ad-supported tier can have title exclusions caused by licensing. These are separate limitations: upgrading to an ad-free tier removes the normal ad-supported experience, while a title that is unavailable because of licensing may depend on Netflix’s rights in your region and plan.
Account sharing, households, and extra members
Netflix defines a household as the collection of devices connected to the internet at the main residence where you watch Netflix. Its stated rule is: “You cannot share your Netflix account outside of your household.” Read the complete wording in the Netflix Help Center plan information before arranging access for relatives or friends at another address.
The plan table lists one possible extra member on Standard and up to two on Premium. An extra member has an individual account and password, while the person who invited them pays for the slot. The cited table does not list an extra-member option for Standard with ads, so do not assume that the lowest-priced tier includes one.

If people regularly watch from different residences, review Netflix’s current account and extra-member terms in your country; availability and pricing can vary by market, and the plan page is the authoritative place to confirm what your account can add.

Which plan is worth it for your situation?
Choose Standard with ads when all of these are true
- You want the lowest listed US monthly price.
- 1080p Full HD meets your needs.
- You accept commercial breaks during ordinary viewing.
- You can tolerate the possibility that some titles are unavailable under ad-supported licensing.
- Your household’s concurrent viewing and offline-download needs fit the limits in the table.
Choose Standard when these priorities dominate
- You want ad-free movies, shows, and games without moving to 4K.
- Your main screens are Full HD or you do not consider HDR important.
- Your normal viewing pattern fits the lower stream and download capacities.
- You may need the listed option for one extra member.
Choose Premium when at least one of these is important
- You own, or plan to use, a compatible 4K/HDR display and want Netflix’s highest listed picture quality.
- More than two people commonly watch at the same time.
- Several supported devices need offline downloads.
- You want Netflix spatial audio and have compatible playback equipment.
- You need the listed capacity for up to two extra members.
There is no universal “best value.” Compare the monthly price with the specific feature that solves your problem: ad avoidance, catalog access, image quality, concurrent viewing, downloads, audio, or extra-member capacity. Paying for Premium solely because it is the top tier is wasteful if your screens are Full HD and your household rarely streams concurrently; choosing the ad tier is poor value if a missing licensed title or ad breaks would defeat the purpose of subscribing.
Prices, billing, and plan changes
The listed US prices are monthly: $8.99 for Standard with ads, $19.99 for Standard, and $26.99 for Premium. The figures come from Netflix’s plan table as of October 15, 2026 and may not include taxes or reflect bundles, promotions, add-ons, or country-specific pricing.
Netflix states that it does not offer annual, multi-month, or lifetime membership plans. Billing is therefore organized around the monthly membership you select rather than a prepaid annual term. Review the confirmation screen for your market before completing a change, especially if your subscription is billed through a bundle or another provider.
When changing plans, verify three things before confirming: the displayed monthly charge, the effective date shown by Netflix, and whether the target plan includes the stream, download, ad, and extra-member features you actually need. Keep the plan table open while checking so a similarly named tier is not mistaken for the ad-free or Premium option.
A practical checklist before subscribing
- Confirm your country and billing route. The figures in this article are US consumer-plan figures; taxes, bundles, add-ons, and eligibility can differ elsewhere.
- Count peak simultaneous viewers. Base the choice on the number of people likely to watch at the same time, not the number of profiles.
- Check your screens. Select Premium for 4K/HDR only when your display and connected equipment support those formats.
- Decide how important ad-free access is. Include tolerance for commercial breaks and the ad tier’s possible title exclusions in that decision.
- Count offline devices. Compare the download-device limits if phones or tablets are prepared for travel or unreliable connectivity.
- Review sharing needs. Netflix’s household rule applies, and extra-member capacity is listed only for Standard and Premium in the cited table.
- Recheck the live plan page. Netflix can change prices, features, and eligibility; confirm the offer shown for your account immediately before payment.
Bottom line
Standard with ads is the budget choice for viewers who accept advertising and possible licensing-based exclusions. Standard is the balanced ad-free 1080p option for smaller households. Premium earns its higher price when 4K/HDR, spatial audio, more concurrent streams, more download devices, or additional extra-member capacity will actually be used. Match the tier to those concrete needs rather than choosing by price or label alone.
