To use Netflix Picture in Picture on an iPhone, play a title in the Netflix app, then go to the Home Screen or switch to another app. The video should shrink into a floating window so you can keep watching. Netflix lists iOS 14 or later as the iPhone requirement, and says PiP is unavailable on iPhone and iPad with its ad-supported plan.
How to start Netflix Picture in Picture on iPhone
- Open the Netflix app and start playing a title.
- While it is playing, go to the Home Screen or switch to another app. Netflix says PiP activates as playback leaves the foreground.
- Continue using your other app while the video plays in the floating window.
If the video does not shrink, check that automatic PiP start is enabled in Settings > General > Picture in Picture, then try again. Netflix’s iPhone requirement is iOS 14 or later. Netflix Help Center
What you can do with the floating player
- Move it: Drag the window to another position on the screen.
- Resize it: Pinch open or closed.
- Use playback controls: Tap the window to reveal controls such as pause, forward, and rewind.
- Return to full screen: Tap the PiP or Restore Full Screen control.
- Close it: Tap Close to stop playback and dismiss the window.
- Hide it temporarily: Apple says you can drag the window off the left or right edge of the screen; drag it back when you want to see the video again.
Apple notes that PiP works only with supported apps and videos, so the control may not be available for every app or video. Apple’s iPhone guide
Why Netflix PiP may not work
Your Netflix plan may not include PiP
Netflix’s current help guidance says Picture in Picture is not available on iPhone or iPad while using its ad-supported plan. Check your plan before changing iPhone settings; plan names and benefits can change. Netflix Help Center

Your iPhone may not meet the software or device requirements
Netflix lists iOS 14 or later for iPhone, but meeting the OS requirement does not guarantee PiP will work on every device. Apple also says availability depends on app and video support.
Automatic PiP start may be off
Open Settings > General > Picture in Picture and enable automatic start. Then return to Netflix, play a title, and leave the app for the Home Screen or another app.

The app or device may need refreshing
If the plan, iOS version, and setting are all eligible, Netflix recommends updating the Netflix app, force-closing and reopening it, and restarting the iPhone. If PiP remains unavailable, Netflix directs users to contact its support team. Netflix Help Center troubleshooting
