Netflix now treats an account as belonging to one Netflix Household—the devices that connect to the internet at the main place where the account holder watches. Sharing a password with someone who lives elsewhere is not permitted under Netflix’s standard rules. That person must either open a separate account or use a paid extra-member slot when the plan, country and billing method support it.
Travel is handled differently from permanent out-of-household use. Netflix can verify a device away from home with a temporary code, while the account holder can update the Household or remove unfamiliar devices from a television.
What Netflix means by “household”
Netflix defines a Household by the home network and devices used at the account’s main viewing location, not by a list of people who have been given the password. Its Help Center says, “You may not share your Netflix account outside of your household.” It also says that people outside the Household must create their own account or be added as an extra member.
When a television and other devices sign in through the same internet connection, Netflix uses the connection’s IP address, device IDs and account activity to establish the Household. Netflix says it does not use GPS to determine a device’s precise location. In practice, the household is therefore a network-and-device relationship: the primary TV and the home internet connection provide the anchor, while phones, tablets, computers and streaming devices connect to it.

A Household is not the same thing as a profile. Profiles organize viewing on one account; they do not authorize a person who lives at another address to use that account indefinitely.
Can you share a Netflix password with someone who lives elsewhere?
Not under the normal account rules. A relative, friend or roommate who permanently lives elsewhere is outside the Netflix Household, even if that person has previously used one of the account’s profiles. Netflix’s supported choices are:
- Add the person as an extra member: available only for eligible plans, countries and billing arrangements, and for a separate monthly charge.
- Have the person create a separate account: the independent option when an extra-member slot is unavailable, the user lives in another country, or the user needs more control and capacity.
Netflix may still let an out-of-household device play for a time, but a successful sign-in is not proof that permanent password sharing is allowed. The service can ask the device to verify its connection to the Household.

An extra member is a paid extension of the account owner’s plan, not a second free password. The owner buys the slot and remains responsible for billing and management. Netflix gives the extra member a separate sign-in, password and profile, so the person does not have to use the owner’s main password.

| Decision point | Extra member | Separate account |
|---|---|---|
| Who pays and controls billing? | The original account owner pays and manages the slot. | The new account holder pays and manages their own subscription. |
| Profiles | One profile. | A regular account can have up to five profiles. |
| Simultaneous viewing | One supported device at a time. | Uses the simultaneous-device allowance of the plan selected for that account. |
| Country requirement | The extra member must activate in the same country as the account owner. | A separate account is the route when the user needs an account in a different country. |
| Account administration | The owner can manage or remove the slot; the member has a separate login. | The new subscriber controls profiles, payment and account settings. |
Choose an extra member when the user lives in the same country, needs only one profile and one supported stream, and the owner is comfortable paying. Choose a separate account when the user needs multiple profiles, more than one simultaneous device, independent payment, or a different country.
Who can be an extra member?
Netflix’s paid sharing option is generally offered to owners of Standard and Premium plans in supported markets. The person being invited must activate the extra-member account in the same country as the owner. Availability can also depend on how the subscription is billed: some third-party-billed accounts and packages are excluded.
Ad-supported plans do not support extra members. A plan that appears eligible in one country may have different rules elsewhere, so check the account’s current offer before promising a slot or quoting a price. Taxes, package arrangements and billing partners can change the final amount.

What the extra member receives
- A separate account login and password.
- One profile.
- Viewing on one supported device at a time.
- Access managed through the owner’s subscription and country eligibility.
If the invitee needs several profiles, more simultaneous devices, or full control over payment, a separate account is the more suitable structure.

How to add an extra member
The exact controls can vary by country and billing method, but the process follows the same decision sequence. Complete these checks before sending an invitation:
- Confirm the plan. Verify that the subscription is Standard or Premium rather than an ad-supported plan, and confirm that extra members are offered in the owner’s country.
- Check the billing arrangement. Third-party billing and certain package subscriptions may not qualify even when the plan name appears eligible.
- Check the invitee’s country. The invitee must activate in the same country as the account owner.
- Open account management. Sign in as the account owner and select the extra-member option shown for the plan. If no option is displayed, the plan, country or billing method is not currently eligible.
- Buy an available slot. Standard generally provides one slot; Premium can provide up to two in the US listing retrieved in 2026.
- Send the invitation. Enter the invitee’s details as requested and have that person accept the invitation, create a separate password and finish activation in the eligible country.
- Explain the limits. Tell the new member that the arrangement includes one profile and one supported device at a time. A separate account is required for additional capacity.
The owner should not send the primary account password as a substitute for the invitation. The extra-member login is designed to keep the member’s credentials separate while leaving payment responsibility with the owner.
US prices and slot limits shown in Netflix’s 2026 listing
The following figures come from Netflix’s US Help Center listing retrieved in 2026. They are monthly prices for the US listing, before any taxes or package-specific changes, and can change.
| Plan in the US listing | Monthly price | Extra-member availability |
|---|---|---|
| Standard with ads | $8.99/month | Not eligible for extra members because ad-supported plans are excluded. |
| Standard | $19.99/month | One extra-member slot. |
| Premium | $26.99/month | Up to two extra-member slots. |
These prices should not be converted into a worldwide price list. Netflix sets prices by country, and the amount can differ for taxes, mobile or television packages, and subscriptions billed through another company. The extra-member charge in the same US listing is $7.99 per month with ads or $9.99 per month without ads. Check the amount displayed in the owner’s account before completing the purchase.

Profiles are not extra members
A regular Netflix account can contain up to five profiles. Profiles are useful when people share one Household because each profile keeps recommendations, viewing history, My List and settings separate. Creating another profile does not create another Household and does not make an out-of-home user compliant with Netflix’s sharing rule.
An extra member receives one profile. If a person already has a profile on the owner’s account, Netflix’s profile-transfer feature can move recommendations, viewing history, My List, saved games and settings into a new account or an extra-member account. That lets the person keep their viewing context without continuing to use the owner’s main credentials.

Temporary travel is not treated the same way as moving an account to another home. A TV, phone or other device that is away from the Household may trigger a verification request. Netflix provides an “I’m Traveling” choice for this situation.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Open Netflix on the away device when the verification message appears.
- Choose I’m Traveling.
- Request the temporary code sent to the account’s email address or phone number.
- Enter the four-digit code promptly. Netflix says the code expires after 15 minutes.
- Use a non-Kids profile for the travel verification flow, as recommended by Netflix’s account guidance.
The code verifies temporary access; it does not grant permission for someone who lives elsewhere to share the account permanently. Netflix recommends opening the app on the Household Wi-Fi at least once a month when possible. That reconnects the account with its established home network and can reduce interruptions during later travel.

If a traveler cannot receive the email or text, the account owner should confirm that the contact details are current rather than forwarding the primary password. A code requested by an unknown person is a security warning.
Why Netflix says a TV is not part of the Household
The warning usually means Netflix cannot associate the TV’s current internet connection or device activity with the Household it has on record. Common causes include a new home internet service, a replacement router, a second residence, a hotel or holiday rental, or a television that has not connected to the Household network recently.
Update the Household after a genuine move
- Connect the main television to the home internet connection that should define the Household.
- Open Netflix on that TV and use the Update Netflix Household option.
- Complete the on-screen confirmation.
- Reconnect the household’s regular devices to that same internet connection and sign in again if Netflix requests it.
Only update the Household for the account holder’s real primary location. Repeatedly changing it to accommodate another address can create more verification prompts and does not turn permanent out-of-household sharing into an allowed use.

The account holder can review recently active devices and sign out of devices that are unfamiliar. If an unknown person requested a temporary code, sign out of all devices and change the Netflix password. A code should be shared only with the account holder or a traveler the account holder recognizes.
Account-holder checklist
- Identify the TV and home internet connection that should establish the Household.
- Use Update Netflix Household on the main TV when the primary viewing location has genuinely changed.
- Review recently active devices and remove anything unfamiliar.
- Change the password after an unknown code request or suspicious sign-in.
- For someone living elsewhere, verify the plan, country and billing method before considering an extra-member slot.
- Compare the extra-member charge with a separate account, especially when the user needs multiple profiles, additional simultaneous devices or independent payment.
- Tell travelers to use a non-Kids profile, request the four-digit code only when needed and reconnect to Household Wi-Fi at least monthly when practical.
What to remember about Netflix password sharing
The key distinction is location. Profiles are for people organizing one Household account; extra members are a paid, limited way to support one person outside the home where Netflix offers it; a separate account is required when those conditions do not fit. Household detection relies on network and device signals rather than GPS, and travel verification is temporary. Because prices and eligibility vary by country and billing method, the account page—not a price from another region—should be the final check before making a change.
