Netflix is eliminating nearly 1,000 jobs—about 6% of its global workforce—in the company’s largest layoff round since 2022. Co-CEOs Ted Sarandos and Greg Peters announced the cuts in an employee memo on October 14, 2026, describing them as organizational changes.
What Netflix announced
The memo says Netflix will remove about 6% of its workforce, equivalent to nearly 1,000 positions worldwide. The announcement was first reported from the employee communication signed by Sarandos and Peters. The Associated Press reported the memo and figures, while Reuters reporting carried by GV Wire described the round as Netflix’s biggest reduction since 2022.

Netflix had approximately 16,000 full-time employees worldwide at the end of 2025. That headcount provides the basis for the company’s estimate of nearly 1,000 positions, although the final number could change as the cuts are implemented.

The company has not publicly provided a complete schedule for when every affected employee will be notified or when positions will disappear.

Which Netflix departments are affected?
The employee memo says the largest impact will be in four areas:
- Product
- Technology
- Legal
- Human resources
Available reports do not provide a full role-by-role or country-by-country breakdown. It is therefore not possible to identify the precise number of affected employees in each department or region.

Why Netflix says it is cutting jobs
Sarandos and Peters said Netflix’s business is strong and growing, but argued that reaching its growth goals requires more focused decisions about where the company assigns people and money. They said Netflix will keep investing in areas expected to have a high impact on the service, growth and innovation.
“Decisions like these are never easy, and we don’t take them lightly,” the executives wrote in the memo, according to AP’s report. The memo also said Netflix’s mission “to entertain the world” requires discipline in prioritizing people and resources; TechCrunch published that wording.

News coverage places the layoffs in a broader fight for viewers’ time. Streaming services and other entertainment platforms are competing for attention, while Netflix’s growth has been slower than management wants. That competition is context reported by news outlets, not a detailed restructuring plan released by Netflix. The company’s stated explanation is a reallocation of resources toward its highest-priority work.
How this compares with Netflix’s 2022 layoffs
The 2026 action is the largest Netflix reduction since 2022. In that year, Netflix cut about 450 jobs across two rounds after the company lost subscribers for the first time in more than a decade.

The layoffs do not come with a claim that Netflix is losing money. Netflix reported $3.4 billion in net income and $12.56 billion in revenue for the second quarter of 2026, figures cited by AP. Sarandos and Peters characterized the business as strong and growing while saying that its targets require sharper prioritization.

Those results show why the announcement is being framed as an efficiency and focus decision rather than an emergency response to a disclosed cash crisis. They do not, by themselves, reveal which projects, offices or individual roles will remain.

- The exact final headcount after voluntary departures, reassignment or other changes.
- The implementation timetable for each affected team.
- The geographic distribution of the cuts.
- Role-level details beyond the four departments named in the memo.
- Severance, benefits and other transition terms.
Those details may change as Netflix communicates directly with employees or makes additional regulatory filings. Until then, “about 6%” and “nearly 1,000” should be read as the figures in the October 14 employee memo, not as a finalized payroll count.
What the announcement means for Netflix
The scale makes this Netflix’s most significant workforce reduction since the 2022 subscriber setback. The department mix points to an effort to reshape internal operations around product development, engineering, compliance and people management, but Netflix has not published a project-by-project explanation.

For customers, the memo does not announce a change to subscription plans, catalog availability or product features. Its immediate subject is staffing: Netflix says it will reduce positions while continuing to fund work it considers most important for the service, growth and innovation.
