There is no single Netflix brightness slider or universal TV menu path. Adjust the picture on the television or streaming device running Netflix; on some HDR-capable setups, you can also compare Netflix’s HDR On and HDR Off options.
How do I adjust Netflix brightness on my TV?
Netflix recommends changing the brightness level or HDR settings on the device when a show or movie is not bright enough. The exact controls depend on your TV brand and model, so use its manual or manufacturer support for precise directions. Netflix’s dark-picture help page notes that Netflix customer service cannot provide device-specific steps.
- Start playing the Netflix title that looks too dark.
- Open your TV’s picture or display settings using its remote or on-screen menu. Look for brightness and picture-mode controls; names and locations vary by model.
- Change one setting at a time, then check the same scene before and after. Compare shadow detail and overall visibility, while checking that highlights and colors still look acceptable.
- If the picture does not improve, restore the original setting and continue to the HDR check below if it is available.
A numeric brightness value cannot be recommended across TVs: picture controls and HDR modes differ by manufacturer and model.
How do I turn HDR off on Netflix?
Netflix provides an HDR On/Off choice on some HDR-capable TV and device setups. Netflix says the account must have a Premium plan and the device must support HDR. When the option is available, the path is Netflix home screen menu > Get Help > Video > HDR On or HDR Off. The menu’s position can vary by app version, and some HDR-compatible TVs do not display this toggle. Netflix’s troubleshooting instructions describe the option.

Treat HDR Off as a reversible test, not a default fix. Compare the same scene in the same room lighting with HDR on and off. Keep the setting that makes the picture easier to see without an unacceptable change to highlights or colors, or restore your original choice if neither setting helps. Netflix identifies HDR settings as one possible adjustment; it does not say HDR is the cause of every dim-looking title.
Why is Netflix so dark on my TV?
The picture may be affected by the TV’s own picture settings, an HDR mode, or the capabilities of the devices and connections in the playback chain. Netflix says 4K and HDR availability can depend on the plan, TV, streaming player or receiver, cable, and supported HDMI port. If a component does not meet the requirements, playback uses the highest quality available for that component. Netflix’s video-quality guidance explains these dependencies.

Start with the settings on the device actually running Netflix. If the TV’s picture controls or the Netflix HDR option are absent, that does not by itself establish that the TV is broken: controls and features vary by model, app, and setup.
Can Netflix Calibrated Mode affect picture controls?
Some TVs include model-specific viewing modes that can affect which picture controls are available. Netflix’s Panasonic support page says some 2019 and 2020 Panasonic TVs include Netflix Calibrated Mode, while some 2020 models include Filmmaker Mode; supported users can find these features in the TV’s Menu > Picture area. They are not available on every model. Netflix’s Panasonic TV guidance lists the applicable examples.

Netflix announced Calibrated Mode for supported Sony TVs as a way to configure the display toward creators’ monitor calibration. Sony says picture-mode settings are grayed out while Netflix Calibrated Mode is on. If controls appear unavailable, check the TV manual or manufacturer support for your model and mode. This behavior is specific to supported TVs, not a general explanation for every dark picture. Sony’s support page describes the behavior; Netflix’s announcement explains the feature.
