No. Nest Wifi and Nest Wifi Pro cannot join the same mesh network. A Nest Wifi point or Google Wifi point cannot extend a Nest Wifi Pro mesh; to expand Pro coverage, add another Nest Wifi Pro router as a point in Google Home. The restriction is about mesh hardware, not ordinary devices such as phones and laptops connecting to Wi-Fi.
Why Nest Wifi and Nest Wifi Pro cannot share a mesh
Google states that Nest Wifi Pro is not backward compatible with earlier Nest Wifi or Google Wifi mesh systems. Pro uses Wi-Fi 6E, including the 6 GHz band for mesh connections. Earlier Nest Wifi and Google Wifi systems are Wi-Fi 5 products and do not support Pro’s 6 GHz mesh connection. Google’s Nest Wifi Pro mesh compatibility guidance explains the restriction.
This means an older Nest Wifi router, Nest Wifi point, or Google Wifi point cannot be set up as a mesh point for a Nest Wifi Pro router. Adding Ethernet between the devices does not make them compatible as one mesh.

To extend a Pro mesh, use another Nest Wifi Pro router and add it as a point in the Google Home app. Google’s guidance says one Wi-Fi network per home is supported in the app, so do not expect a legacy Nest Wifi system and a Pro system configured in the same Home to merge into one seamless network. Google’s compatibility instructions describe adding compatible Pro points.
#1 Best Overall
- Nest Wifi Pro is up to 2x faster than Wi-Fi 6, so you get super fast speeds and a reliable connection for your entire home[1]
- One Wi-Fi router provides up to 2200 square feet of fast, reliable WiFi[2]; and you can customize your setup to create a mesh Wi-Fi system for the coverage you need
- Nest Wifi Pro uses the latest, most advanced Wi-Fi 6E technology[3], so it isn’t compatible with previous generations of Google Wifi or Nest Wifi
- Nest Wifi Pro automatically adjusts your Wi-Fi network’s performance and activity; it prioritizes video calls and helps websites load quickly
- It has built-in technology to make sure your connection is strong and consistent, even at the edge of your Wi-Fi network’s coverage[2]
- Already have Nest Wifi or Google Wifi points? Keep using them with a compatible legacy setup, or move to an all-Pro mesh; they cannot extend the Pro mesh.
- Need more Pro coverage? Add another Nest Wifi Pro router as a point through Google Home.
- Need extra wired LAN connections? An Ethernet switch can add ports in a supported wired setup, but it cannot turn an older mesh point into a Pro-compatible point.
Can ordinary Wi-Fi devices connect to Nest Wifi Pro?
Yes, most devices that connect to Wi-Fi work with Nest Wifi Pro, subject to a few exceptions identified by Google. The generation restriction applies to mesh routers and points, not to every client device. A phone, computer, or other Wi-Fi client does not need to be a Nest Wifi Pro product to connect. See Google’s client and mesh compatibility guidance.
What the generation change means when choosing a system
| System | Wi-Fi generation and bands | Mesh points | Other listed features |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nest Wifi Pro | Wi-Fi 6E; 2.4, 5, and 6 GHz | Nest Wifi Pro routers | Two Ethernet ports; Matter support; Thread border-router capability |
| Nest Wifi / Google Wifi | Wi-Fi 5 | Compatible legacy Nest Wifi and Google Wifi devices, subject to Google’s compatibility guidance | Feature details vary by product; see Google’s comparison |
These are manufacturer feature descriptions, not a promise of a particular speed or coverage in your home. The 6 GHz band is a distinction to weigh against the devices you use and your layout; it does not mean an older point can relay a Pro mesh. Google says it no longer sells Nest Wifi or Google Wifi, so availability of those older products depends on other sellers and is not established by Google’s comparison page. See Google’s Wifi product comparison and Nest Wifi Pro setup information.

Ethernet can help with wiring, not mesh compatibility
Google documents Ethernet connections for supported Nest Wifi Pro, Nest Wifi, and Google Wifi arrangements. If you need more wired ports, an Ethernet switch may be appropriate. Google recommends an unmanaged switch; a managed switch needs configuration to meet its Spanning Tree Protocol and Bridge Protocol Data Unit guidance. Follow Google’s hardwired setup instructions for the topology and switch requirements.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWiring does not override the product-generation restriction. Also, Nest Wifi points have no Ethernet ports, so they cannot be hardwired. A supported wired layout can provide a connection between compatible equipment, but it cannot make Nest Wifi or Google Wifi points members of a Nest Wifi Pro mesh.

Plan Pro point placement for the home
Once you have compatible Pro points, placement affects coverage. Google says room count is only a general planning aid and points generally work best about two to three rooms apart. Walls, materials, and the home’s layout also affect signal, so treat that spacing as guidance rather than a coverage guarantee. These placement considerations do not change which devices are compatible. More detail is available in Google’s point-planning guidance.
