If your Nest thermostat seems to fluctuate, first work out what is changing: the target temperature or mode, the temperature reading from the active sensor, or the comfort level in different rooms. Check the selected mode, that mode’s schedule, Eco and presence settings, and any active temperature sensor in the Google Home or Nest app before changing hardware or calling for service. Menu names and available features vary by thermostat generation and region.
Identify what is fluctuating
“It’s too hot or cold” can describe three different problems. A changing target points first to schedules, manual changes, Eco, or presence automation. A thermostat reading that differs from the room you care about may mean it is sensing a different location. If the target and reading look sensible but other rooms remain uncomfortable, the issue may be uneven heating or cooling rather than a thermostat fault.
- Target or mode changes: Check the current mode, its schedule, and any Eco or presence-based behavior.
- One room’s reading seems wrong: Check which sensor is active, whether it is connected, and where it is placed.
- Rooms differ in comfort: Consider whether the thermostat or active sensor represents the rooms you want to prioritize; persistent unevenness may need an HVAC inspection.
Check the mode, target, and matching schedule
Compare the thermostat’s current target with the schedule for the mode currently selected. Heat, Cool, and Heat • Cool can have separate schedules, so a schedule change for one mode may not explain what happens in another. Also consider whether someone manually changed the target or mode. Google’s troubleshooting guidance notes that manual changes and changes to the active sensor can affect what the thermostat does (Google Nest: troubleshoot temperature issues).
Schedule-learning features differ by model: the Nest Thermostat E and Nest Learning Thermostat have Auto-Schedule, while the Nest Thermostat uses Savings Finder suggestions. The exact app screens and labels can vary by model and region. Review the schedule or suggestions available for your thermostat rather than assuming all Nest models learn or apply schedules the same way (Google Nest: learn about thermostat schedules).

- Savings Finder looks for more ways your thermostat can help you save, and suggests tweaks to your schedule in the app; check with your energy provider to learn more about rebates and more ways to save on a Nest thermostat
Check Eco, Home/Away, and presence automation
See whether the home is marked Away and whether automatic Eco is enabled. Automatic Eco can switch back to heating or cooling when someone returns. By contrast, a manually selected Eco mode may remain active until someone switches the thermostat back. These behaviors and the controls available to change them depend on the thermostat model (Google Nest: thermostat schedules and Eco).
On certain current models, Schedule pre-heating and cooling can precondition the home while it is marked Away; this option is not available universally. If the target appears to change contrary to the ordinary schedule, review presence-based automations and any activity history available in the app. A schedule may be working as configured while another setting changes when the system operates (Google Nest: Home/Away and Eco temperatures; Google Home: automations).

Verify the active temperature sensor
If you use a Nest Temperature Sensor, check that the sensor you intend to use is active and online at the time the room feels uncomfortable. Another household member may have changed the active sensor or target. If a sensor disconnects, the thermostat may fall back to its built-in sensors, so the temperature it uses may no longer represent the room you expected (Google Nest: use temperature sensors with your thermostat).

For example, you might use a bedroom sensor at night, then rely on the thermostat’s built-in sensing during sunny daytime hours. The key is to check which room is guiding the thermostat at the time of the problem.

Improve sensor placement
A remote sensor can mislead the thermostat if its location is not representative. Google advises against placing it near vents, stoves, hot-water pipes, direct sunlight, windows or other uninsulated surfaces, in enclosed places without air circulation, or in a room that is much hotter or colder than the rest of the home. Place it about chest high and within the zone managed by its thermostat (Google Nest: temperature sensor placement).
If Google Home reports error M12, Google associates it with a sensor location that is much hotter or colder than the thermostat’s location. Moving the sensor, changing its schedule, or making a small adjustment to the scheduled target may help in some cases. Google also recommends that a Nest Pro can check the filter, ventilation ducts, and general system operation when needed (Google Nest: troubleshoot temperature sensor issues).

Decide whether a room sensor fits the problem
A Nest Temperature Sensor is an option when one room consistently differs from the thermostat’s location and you want the system to prioritize that room. Google lists compatibility for the Nest Thermostat E and Nest Learning Thermostat (3rd and 4th gen) in the United States and Canada. Confirm compatibility for your model and region before choosing one (Google Nest: temperature sensor compatibility).

That can improve comfort in the prioritized room, but it does not ensure an even temperature throughout the home: other rooms may become warmer or cooler. If the thermostat’s location already represents the area you care about, or if the main issue is an unexpectedly changing target, check settings before considering a sensor.

When to arrange an HVAC inspection
If the mode, target, schedule, Eco behavior, sensor connection, and placement do not explain the problem, arrange a Nest Pro or qualified HVAC inspection. Google’s M12 guidance points to checking the air filter, ducts, and general system function; persistent uneven heating or cooling deserves a system-level check rather than an unsupported diagnosis of a particular component.
Nest advanced settings document controls such as minimum compressor lockout, compressor on-time, and heat on-time to help prevent excessive cycling. Do not apply a universal setting: a suitable configuration depends on the thermostat model and HVAC equipment. If cycling remains a concern after you verify the controls, have a qualified professional assess the system (Google Nest: advanced thermostat settings).
Quick Recap
Choose the next step by symptom
| What you observe | First step | When to go further |
|---|---|---|
| The target or mode changes unexpectedly | Review the selected mode’s schedule, recent manual changes, Eco, Home/Away, and presence automations. | Seek help if the settings do not account for the change. |
| The thermostat seems to read the wrong room | Check the active sensor, connection, schedule, and placement. | Consider a compatible room sensor if you need to prioritize a room away from the thermostat. |
| Other rooms remain too warm or too cool | Check whether the thermostat or active sensor is controlling toward a different room’s temperature. | Arrange an HVAC inspection if comfort remains uneven after settings and sensor checks. |
| The system cycles unexpectedly | Review applicable advanced controls without assuming one setting suits every system. | Ask a qualified professional to check the thermostat configuration and HVAC equipment. |
