When a Nest device stops working, first check whether the problem affects one product or several. If other devices on the same Wi-Fi also cannot reach the internet, the fault is likely with the network or internet service; if they work, focus on the Nest device, app, or router compatibility. Start with checks and restarts before considering a factory reset, which can erase settings or video history.

First, find out how much of your home is affected

Check the Google Home or Nest app and note which products appear offline or fail to respond. If more than one Nest product is affected, check for a power outage and test internet access on another device connected to the same Wi-Fi. On a phone, turn off cellular data during the test so it does not silently use the mobile network.

  • If the other device also cannot access the internet, restart your modem and router. If internet access still fails, contact your internet service provider.
  • If the other device can access the internet, check your router settings and compatibility, and check Nest service status before troubleshooting each Nest product individually.

Google says Nest products periodically try to reconnect to the network automatically, but that does not identify the cause or replace checking your connection. See Google’s Wi-Fi and connection troubleshooting guide.

Check the app, setup conditions, and error message

Update the Google Home or Nest app, then read any error message or help code shown in the app or on the device. The distinction matters: a thermostat that is on Wi-Fi but will not connect to an account has a different problem from one that cannot join Wi-Fi.

Google’s guides cover pairing issues and connecting a Nest thermostat to the app.

If a Nest thermostat is offline or will not pair

  1. Check whether another device on the same Wi-Fi can access the internet.
  2. Restart the modem, router, and any Wi-Fi extenders or repeaters.
  3. Restart the thermostat, then try reconnecting it to Wi-Fi.
  4. If it remains offline, reset the thermostat’s network connection and reconnect it to the app using Google’s instructions for your model.
  5. For pairing problems, check that the thermostat charge is at least 3.8 V, as specified in Google’s pairing guidance.

Use Google’s thermostat offline steps for connection issues and its pairing guide for setup failures. If Wi-Fi works but the thermostat cannot be added to your account, use the app connection guide.

If a Nest camera or doorbell is offline

Try a restart before a factory reset. Restarting preserves settings and should let the camera or doorbell reconnect to the same Wi-Fi. A factory reset is different: it erases personalized settings and the entire video history, and the device will not reconnect automatically. You will need to set it up again.

Save any important clips before removing or resetting the device. If you changed your Wi-Fi network name or password, Google says camera and doorbell Wi-Fi information cannot be updated in the Home app; a factory reset and setup again may be necessary. Follow Google’s instructions to restart or factory reset a camera or doorbell or change its Wi-Fi network.

If a Nest speaker or display is not responding

Check the network and app first, then use the product’s troubleshooting steps and restart it before considering a factory reset. A factory reset clears device data, cannot be undone, and disconnects the device from home members. Verify the steps for your exact model in Google’s speaker and display factory-reset guide before proceeding.

Restart or factory reset? Know what you risk

Action What it does What to consider
Restart a camera or doorbell Restarts the device while preserving settings; it should reconnect to the same Wi-Fi. Try this before a factory reset. See Google’s camera and doorbell instructions.
Factory reset a camera or doorbell Erases personalized settings and all video history; does not reconnect automatically. Save important clips first and expect to set up the device again. See Google’s camera and doorbell instructions.
Factory reset a speaker or display Clears device data and disconnects the device from home members; the action cannot be undone. Confirm the model-specific steps before proceeding. See Google’s speaker and display instructions.

When to contact your ISP or keep troubleshooting

  • Contact your ISP if other devices on the same Wi-Fi cannot reach the internet after you restart the network equipment.
  • Keep troubleshooting the Nest device if other devices have internet access. Check router settings and compatibility, app permissions, pairing details, and any displayed error code.
  • Do not replace a router just because a Nest product is offline. First establish whether the existing network is down or misconfigured; hardware replacement is not the default fix.
