Nest is the better choice if you want the visitor outside to hear a Halloween, Christmas or other seasonal doorbell sound. Google’s seasonal themes change the tone played by the Nest doorbell and can also play through Google Nest or Home speakers and displays when visitor announcements are enabled. Ring’s seasonal Chime tones change alerts on your phone and Ring Chime; Ring staff state that the physical Doorbell ringer itself does not change.
That distinction matters more than the size of either company’s holiday library. Nest treats a seasonal theme as a visitor-facing doorbell sound. Ring treats seasonal audio mainly as an indoor notification option. Your model, wiring and accessory compatibility still determine whether the indoor part works.
Quick comparison
| Question | Nest Doorbell | Ring Doorbell |
|---|---|---|
| Can the person outside hear the seasonal sound? | Yes. Google says the unique sound plays on the Nest doorbell. | No, based on Ring’s staff explanation. The physical Doorbell ringer remains unchanged. |
| Where can the sound play indoors? | Google Nest or Home speakers and displays through visitor announcements; compatible wired chimes may also be used where supported. | Ring Chime or Chime Pro, plus the Ring app on your phone. |
| What changes? | The doorbell’s visitor-facing ringtone and, optionally, the announced sound indoors. | Phone and Chime notification tones. Seasonal Quick Replies are a separate feature. |
| How long are themes available? | Holiday themes are limited-time releases and disappear from the app after the holiday. | Seasonal Chime tones and Quick Replies are released around the related season or holiday. |
| Most important hardware limitation | Battery-powered Nest doorbells cannot use a digital chime. The current wired 3rd-generation model requires compatible low-voltage wiring and chime hardware. | Compatibility depends on the doorbell and chime kit. Ring Video Doorbell Wired and Peephole Cam are not compatible with in-home chime kits. |
There is no independent head-to-head measurement of sound quality or the number of seasonal tones. The practical winner is determined by where you want the sound heard.
How Nest seasonal sounds work
The exterior doorbell changes
Google describes a seasonal theme as a unique sound that greets visitors when they press the Nest doorbell. That makes Nest the straightforward answer to “Can the person outside hear the Christmas sound?” The answer is yes, provided the feature is available for your doorbell and the seasonal release is active.

Google’s audio-design guidance says Nest ringtones are no more than 10 seconds and contain no speech or lyrics. Benjamin Decker, an Audio UX Designer for Google Nest, explains the reason: “First off, ringtones need to be pretty short — our rule is no more than 10 seconds — so your visitors don’t get impatient waiting at the door.” The result is a brief chime or musical motif rather than a full song. A theme named after a carol therefore should not be expected to play the entire carol.
Indoor playback is optional
If visitor announcements are enabled, Google says the seasonal sound can also play through a Google Nest or Home speaker or display in the house. This is separate from the exterior doorbell speaker: you can have the visitor-facing tone, the indoor announcement, or both, depending on your announcement and speaker settings.
This arrangement is useful in a larger home. The person on the porch hears the themed doorbell, while someone upstairs can hear the announcement on a compatible speaker or display. If announcements are disabled, changing the Nest ringtone does not automatically create a new sound on every phone or smart speaker.
Examples of the holiday themes
Google’s documented examples include a ghost or witch sound for Halloween; Christmas themes such as “The Twelve Days of Christmas”; “The Dreidel Song” for Hanukkah; and “Auld Lang Syne” for New Year’s Eve. Google also mentions creepy Halloween chimes, everyday chimes and a birthday tune among its options.
These examples show that the library is broader than Christmas alone, but they are not a permanent catalog. Google releases some as seasonal additions, so a theme that was available last year may not be selectable today. Regional release timing can also differ. Check the Google Home app during the relevant holiday instead of assuming an older screenshot or video reflects the current list.
After the holiday period, Google says the doorbell returns to its default tone and the seasonal theme disappears from the app. That automatic reset prevents an old holiday sound from remaining selected indefinitely, but it also means you cannot necessarily install a Halloween tone in February and save it for October.
How Ring seasonal sounds work
Seasonal Chime tones are indoor alerts
Ring support documentation describes Ring Chime and Chime Pro as devices that provide customizable audio alerts for supported doorbells. A Ring staff explanation draws the important boundary: app alert tones and Chime tones change the audio alert played on your phone and on the Chime, while “The actual Doorbell ringer will not change.”
Therefore, Ring can give people inside the home a holiday notification without changing what a visitor hears at the door. If your goal is an outdoor Halloween sound, selecting a seasonal Chime tone will not achieve it. Someone standing on the porch still hears the standard physical ringer for that doorbell.

Quick Replies are not the same as a ringtone
Ring releases seasonal Quick Replies around relevant holidays as a separate feature. A Quick Reply is a response you choose to send to a visitor from the doorbell interface; it is not the same thing as replacing the ringer. Do not treat a holiday Quick Reply as evidence that the physical doorbell ringer has changed.
Ring’s explanation specifically limits the seasonal Chime and app-tone changes to the phone and Chime. The Doorbell ringer remains standard. This distinction answers a common question: Ring may offer a Halloween-themed interaction, but that does not mean the button itself emits a witch, ghost or other outdoor effect when pressed.
What you need for indoor Ring sounds
A compatible Ring Chime or Chime Pro is the dedicated indoor option when you want a customizable alert rather than relying only on a phone. Compatibility varies by doorbell and existing chime kit. Ring says the Ring Video Doorbell Wired and Peephole Cam are not compatible with in-home chime kits and recommends Ring Chime or Chime Pro for customizable alerts on those products.

Buying a Chime does not make the outdoor ringer seasonal; it only supplies an indoor alert path.
Where each sound is heard
| Listening location | Nest seasonal theme | Ring seasonal audio |
|---|---|---|
| Visitor standing outside | Seasonal sound plays on the Nest doorbell. | Physical Doorbell ringer stays at its normal sound, according to Ring staff. |
| Phone | Not the defining seasonal behavior described by Google; phone notifications are separate from the doorbell tone. | Seasonal app alert tones can change the phone notification. |
| Smart speaker or display | Google Nest or Home speakers and displays can play the sound when visitor announcements are enabled. | Not established as part of Ring’s seasonal Chime-tone behavior. |
| Dedicated indoor chime | Compatible wired chimes can work with supported wired Nest installations; battery-powered Nest doorbells cannot use a digital chime. | Ring Chime or Chime Pro can provide customizable alerts when compatible with the doorbell. |
The listening location is the decisive comparison. “Best holiday chimes” means Nest if it refers to the porch, but Ring can be perfectly suitable if it means a themed alert for people elsewhere in the house.
Model and installation constraints
Nest Doorbell (wired), 3rd gen
Google’s current Nest Doorbell (wired), 3rd gen specification calls for a 16–24VAC, 10–40VA, 50/60Hz transformer. It supports compatible wired chimes with the included chime connector. It is not compatible with battery-powered wireless doorbell chimes.
Check the transformer and existing chime before buying. A doorbell can have the right app feature but still fail to produce an indoor chime if the electrical supply or chime hardware is incompatible. The voltage and VA figures are installation requirements, not optional performance recommendations; confirm them at the transformer or with a qualified installer if the existing system is unclear.
Battery-powered Nest models
Google Help states that digital chimes work only with Nest doorbells wired to the home doorbell system. Battery-powered Nest doorbells cannot use a digital chime.

The documented limitation is specifically the digital chime. It does not say that a battery model’s built-in doorbell speaker cannot play a seasonal theme. In practical terms, treat the battery model as an exterior-sound option with no digital-chime support; use Google visitor announcements for compatible indoor playback instead.
Ring doorbell and chime compatibility
Ring’s compatibility warning is model-specific. The Ring Video Doorbell Wired and Peephole Cam do not work with in-home chime kits, so Ring Chime or Chime Pro is the relevant indoor-alert path for those models. Other Ring doorbells may work with an existing chime kit, but compatibility must be checked for the exact doorbell and kit.
This check should happen before installation, not after a seasonal tone fails. Identify whether the home has a mechanical, digital or no existing chime; then match that arrangement to the doorbell’s compatibility chart. If the doorbell is excluded, plan on a Ring Chime or Chime Pro for indoor audio.
How to enable a Nest seasonal theme
- Identify the doorbell and chime arrangement. Confirm whether you have a wired or battery-powered Nest model. If it is the wired 3rd-generation model, verify the 16–24VAC, 10–40VA transformer requirement and whether the installed chime is a compatible wired unit.
- Open the Google Home app. Select the Nest doorbell and look for the seasonal-theme or ringtone controls. Google distributes seasonal sounds through the Google Home app, and the available list changes during the year.
- Download and select an available theme. Choose the Halloween, Christmas, Hanukkah, New Year’s Eve or other theme currently offered in your region. A theme may be absent simply because its release window has ended.
- Set up visitor announcements if you want indoor playback. Enable visitor announcements for the Google Nest or Home speaker or display where you want the sound reproduced. Without visitor announcements, the exterior doorbell can still provide its own visitor-facing tone, but the smart speaker or display will not mirror it.
- Ring the doorbell once to test. Check the sound outside and, separately, the selected indoor speaker or display. If the indoor device is silent, troubleshoot announcements and speaker assignment before changing wiring.
- Expect the theme to expire. Google says the doorbell returns to its default tone after the holiday and the seasonal theme disappears from the app.
How to configure Ring seasonal alerts
- Check the doorbell model. Confirm whether your model supports an in-home chime kit. Ring specifically excludes Ring Video Doorbell Wired and Peephole Cam from in-home chime-kit compatibility.
- Choose the indoor alert device. Use a compatible existing chime where supported, or install Ring Chime or Chime Pro when you need a dedicated customizable indoor alert.
- Open the Ring app and configure alert audio. Look for the app-alert and Chime-tone controls associated with the doorbell and Chime. Seasonal tones appear around the related holiday rather than remaining available year-round.
- Select phone and Chime tones independently if offered. Ring distinguishes the alert played on the phone from the alert played on the Chime, so changing one does not necessarily change the other.
- Test from outside and inside. The phone and Chime should use the selected alert when supported. The physical Doorbell ringer should remain its normal sound; that is expected behavior, not an installation failure.
Which doorbell fits common holiday-sound goals?
Choose Nest when visitors should hear the holiday sound
Nest is the clear fit for a porch where the person ringing should hear a Halloween, Christmas or other seasonal tone. Google explicitly makes the doorbell itself part of the seasonal experience, then offers optional playback through indoor Google speakers and displays.
It is also the simpler answer when you want one setting to affect both sides of the door: the doorbell plays outside, and visitor announcements can reproduce the event inside. The sound remains short—Google’s design rule is no more than 10 seconds—so it adds atmosphere without making a visitor wait through a long track.
Choose Ring when the household wants a themed notification
Ring makes sense when the priority is an indoor alert with seasonal character. A Ring Chime or Chime Pro can play a holiday tone, and the phone can use its own app-alert sound. This is useful when the doorbell’s outdoor ringer is less important than notifying people elsewhere in the house.
Ring is also a reasonable choice if you specifically want Quick Replies in addition to indoor alerts. Just keep the two functions separate in your expectations: a Quick Reply is an interaction sent to the visitor, while a Chime tone is an alert for the household.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Choose based on wiring before audio preferences
A seasonal-sound preference cannot override installation limits. A wired Nest installation requires the stated transformer range, chime connector and compatible wired chime. A battery Nest installation cannot use a digital chime. A Ring installation may require Chime or Chime Pro, particularly for the Ring Video Doorbell Wired or Peephole Cam.

Holiday availability and timing
Neither platform should be treated as having a permanently fixed holiday catalog. Google describes seasonal themes as limited-time releases and removes them from the app after the holiday. Ring staff likewise describe seasonal Chime tones and Quick Replies as arriving around the related season or holiday.
For Halloween, check in October; for Christmas or Hanukkah, check during the relevant December release; and for “Auld Lang Syne,” check around New Year’s Eve. If a sound is missing, first verify timing and region before assuming the doorbell is defective. App updates or a different model may also change which controls appear, so use the current device-specific settings rather than an old tutorial.

The Nest seasonal option is missing
- The holiday release may be over. Google removes seasonal themes from the app after the holiday and restores the default tone.
- The theme may not be offered for your region or model at that time. Google describes these as limited-time releases, not a permanent library.
- If the theme is selected but no indoor sound plays, check visitor announcements and the chosen Google Nest or Home speaker or display separately from the doorbell.
- Do not confuse a missing indoor chime with a missing outdoor theme. The battery model’s digital-chime restriction concerns indoor chime hardware, not the documented visitor-facing seasonal function.
The Nest indoor chime does not sound
- Battery-powered Nest doorbells cannot use a digital chime.
- For a wired model, verify the transformer is within 16–24VAC, 10–40VA, 50/60Hz where applicable and that the chime is a compatible wired unit.
- Do not substitute a battery-powered wireless doorbell chime for the wired chime hardware supported by the Nest Doorbell (wired), 3rd gen.
- If you use a Google speaker or display instead, confirm visitor announcements are enabled and assigned to that device.
The Ring holiday tone does not play
- Confirm that a compatible Ring Chime or Chime Pro, or a supported existing chime kit, is associated with the doorbell.
- Check both phone app-alert and Chime-tone settings; Ring treats them as separate alerts.
- The seasonal release may not yet be active or may have ended. Ring staff describe these tones as arriving around the related season or holiday.
- If you are listening at the porch, expect the standard physical Doorbell ringer. Ring says the seasonal Chime and app tones do not change it.
- For Ring Video Doorbell Wired or Peephole Cam, do not expect an in-home chime kit to work; use the supported Ring Chime or Chime Pro route.
Frequently asked questions
Does Nest or Ring have Halloween doorbell sounds?
Nest has documented Halloween seasonal themes, including ghost, witch and creepy chimes that play on the Nest doorbell. Ring offers seasonal Chime tones and Halloween Quick Replies, but those change indoor or phone behavior rather than the physical outdoor ringer.
Recommended Free Tools
Can the person outside hear the Christmas sound?
Yes on Nest when the seasonal theme is active: Google says the unique sound plays on the doorbell. No on Ring’s physical ringer, according to Ring staff; a Christmas Chime tone is heard by the household through the Chime or phone.
Does Ring change the actual doorbell sound or only the Chime?
Ring changes the app alert on the phone and the alert on a compatible Ring Chime or Chime Pro. Ring staff explicitly say the actual Doorbell ringer does not change.
Which smart doorbell has the best holiday chimes?
Choose Nest if “best” means the visitor hears the holiday sound. Choose Ring if “best” means a customizable indoor notification. There is no independent test that establishes a winner for sound quality or counts every seasonal tone.
Do Nest seasonal sounds work on the battery model?
Google documents seasonal themes playing on Nest doorbells, while separately stating that battery-powered Nest doorbells cannot use a digital chime. For a battery model, plan on the built-in exterior sound and compatible Google visitor announcements for indoor playback rather than a wired digital chime.

Do I need a Ring Chime for seasonal Ring alerts?
You need either a compatible existing chime or a Ring Chime/Chime Pro for a dedicated indoor alert. The Ring app can provide phone alerts, but a Chime is the relevant accessory when you want a separate sound throughout the home.
Will a compatible indoor chime make Ring’s outside ringer seasonal?
No. The Chime is an indoor notification device. Ring’s staff explanation says seasonal Chime and app tones do not change the physical Doorbell ringer.
Verdict
For true seasonal doorbell sounds, buy into the Nest approach: the visitor hears the changed tone, and Google visitor announcements can carry it indoors. For seasonal notifications heard by people inside the home, Ring’s Chime and Chime Pro approach is useful, but it does not turn the physical Ring Doorbell ringer into a Halloween or Christmas sound. Check the seasonal option during the holiday itself, because both companies treat these sounds as time-limited releases, and verify wiring or chime compatibility before buying accessories.
