Neil Price’s work on the Viking Age looks beyond sea-kings and raiding to examine ritual specialists, seiðr (a form of Norse magic), and Sámi–Norse relations. It makes a case for including Sámi people in accounts of Scandinavian society while warning that religious similarities do not, on their own, prove shared practices or cultural borrowing. The phrase opening the supplied title has not been verified as a quotation from Price, and the interview’s publication and date are not established.
What changes when Viking Age history includes magic and Sámi–Norse contact?
A history focused only on rulers, ships and conflict leaves out other parts of life and belief. Price’s The Viking Way: Magic and Mind in Late Iron Age Scandinavia treats Norse magic as a substantial subject of historical and archaeological inquiry. Its scope includes written accounts, ritual practitioners, burials, settings and equipment, as well as the ways gender has shaped interpretations of magic.
The book also brings Sámi people into the picture as neighbors and participants in the wider history of the region, rather than placing them only at the distant northern edge of a Viking-age map. Price argues that taking Sámi history into account is important both to understanding Nordic history and to recognizing Sámi heritage. This changes the questions historians ask: not just who ruled or raided, but how communities lived alongside one another and how evidence of belief and practice should be interpreted.
What was seiðr?
Seiðr is a Norse magical practice that Price examines through several kinds of evidence rather than treating it as a single, simple custom. His study considers descriptions in written sources alongside archaeological material, including burials, possible ritual settings and objects associated with ritual specialists. That combination matters because texts and artefacts do not answer the same questions: a written account can describe an interpretation or a social view, while an object or burial must be interpreted in its archaeological context.

Price also considers how gender constructions affect readings of Norse ritual. The point is not that any one artefact or text settles the meaning of a practice, but that claims about who performed magic and what it meant need to be assessed against multiple kinds of evidence.
Why do Sámi people matter to the story?
Price argues that Sámi populations should be considered on equal terms with their Nordic neighbors when interpreting the Viking Age. Archaeological and settlement evidence, in his discussion, suggests Sámi presence and interaction beyond a model that confines them to a remote northern periphery. The precise distribution of communities is not settled simply by identifying an artefact or site, however: assigning ethnicity to archaeological remains can be controversial, and proposed regional patterns should be treated as interpretations rather than fixed borders.

Including Sámi people does not mean treating them as a background influence on Norse history. It means recognizing a more complicated regional history in which contact and co-presence are questions to investigate, while avoiding claims about specific identities or exchanges that the evidence cannot establish.
Does comparing seiðr with noaidevuohta prove cultural borrowing?
No. Price discusses Sámi religion and the Sámi ritual specialist known as a noaidi, and uses Sámi evidence as a comparative framework for thinking about Norse material. But he cautions against equating seiðr with noaidevuohta, the Sámi religious tradition, or assuming that a similarity proves one culture borrowed from the other.

Comparison can help historians test an interpretation: if a proposed reading of Norse evidence resembles a practice in a neighboring belief system, that resemblance may open a useful question. It cannot establish that the same phenomenon must have existed in both traditions, or show which group influenced the other. Similarities are a starting point for investigation, not proof of sameness or a direct line of transmission.
How should readers weigh the evidence?
Viking-age evidence comes in different forms, and its limitations vary. Medieval written accounts differ by genre and language, while archaeological finds provide material evidence that still requires contextual interpretation. The contextual article “Hornless Northmen: Teaching Vikings as People in the World History Context,” by Elizabeth M. Swedo, likewise emphasizes that the source picture varies and that archaeology documents activities and interactions beyond a raiding-only stereotype. That context supports a broader view of Viking-age life; it does not verify a particular claim or quotation from an interview with Price.

What is known about the interview behind the title?
The interview’s publisher, date, full text and wording are not established here. In particular, the title’s opening phrase should not be presented as a verified quotation from Price. The material that can be attributed to him is his scholarship in The Viking Way, including his arguments about seiðr, Sámi inclusion and the limits of cross-cultural comparison; those arguments should not be recast as statements made in an unidentified interview.
