To distinguish Nefertiti, Ankhesenamun, and Kiya, start with inscriptions and titles, then check who appears with whom, the object’s archaeological context, and its regalia. Facial resemblance is the weakest test. The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s disputed KV 55 canopic jar shows why: its inscription was almost erased, the jar and lid were altered in antiquity, and the face has been assigned to several different royal women.

The three women at a glance

These women belonged to the royal household of Akhenaten, but they did not hold the same position or appear under the same names. A name, title, or relationship recorded in a scene usually identifies a figure more securely than an attractive or familiar-looking face.

Woman Most secure identifiers Names and relationships What images may show
Nefertiti Akhenaten’s Great Royal Wife; repeatedly identified by her royal title and role beside the king Mother of six daughters listed in the Berlin museum catalogue, including Ankhesenpaaten, later Ankhesenamun Appears with Akhenaten in religious and state-supporting ceremonies; her crowns and headdresses change across the Amarna period
Ankhesenamun The woman called Ankhesenpaaten in the Amarna context; identified as Tutankhamun’s wife Berlin catalogue equates Ankhesenpaaten with Ankhesenamun and places her among Nefertiti’s daughters Look for a named princess or a scene that identifies her through her family and marital relationship rather than through facial features
Kiya A secondary wife of Akhenaten; the Berlin catalogue records the title “Beloved, great wife of the king” Representations associate her with a daughter; faint traces on the KV 55 jar point to her as its original owner Her identity is especially vulnerable to confusion when inscriptions were erased or objects were reused

This table is a starting map, not a facial-identification guide. The available museum and scholarly records do not establish a dependable checklist of noses, eyes, jawlines, or other features that separates all three women.

Why a face is not enough

Amarna art is highly stylized, and royal images could be idealized, unfinished, altered, or reassigned. A sculpted head may communicate status rather than document an individual’s appearance. The Egyptian Museum in Cairo describes an unfinished head of Nefertiti from a sculptor’s workshop at Tell el-Amarna as an idealized royal figure intended for a composite statue. It was discovered during the 1933 excavations. Even though the museum identifies the subject, the object is not a neutral portrait photograph.

The most useful warning comes from the Metropolitan Museum’s record for a canopic jar and lid from KV 55 in the Valley of the Kings. The museum states: “The jar and lid were altered in antiquity, making it extremely difficult to identify the original owner.” The object is dated to approximately 1347–1330 BCE and was found in 1907. The lid’s face has been attributed at different times to Tiye, Nefertiti, Kiya, and Meritaten. Faint hieroglyphic traces indicate that the jar was originally inscribed for Kiya, while the museum also notes that the lid may have begun as part of Tiye’s burial equipment before being reused.

This is why visual resemblance must come after text and provenance. A confident-looking identification can still be wrong if the inscription was erased, the lid was exchanged, or the object was moved from its original setting.

A reliable identification procedure

1. Read every surviving inscription and title

Begin with cartouches, captions, and formal titles. A legible name normally outweighs a stylistic impression. Record the exact form of the name rather than silently “correcting” it to a familiar spelling. In this group, Ankhesenpaaten is the form expected in the Amarna context, while Ankhesenamun is the later form equated with it by the Berlin catalogue.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Titles also narrow the possibilities. Nefertiti is identified as Akhenaten’s Great Royal Wife. Kiya is described as a secondary wife, even though her recorded title includes the words “Beloved, great wife of the king.” Ankhesenamun is identified through her position as Tutankhamun’s wife and as one of Nefertiti’s daughters. If an inscription is damaged, photograph or transcribe the visible signs and mark uncertain readings instead of treating a partial sign as a complete name.

2. Establish the scene’s relationships

Ask who stands beside the figure, who receives offerings, and which children or attendants are named. A relationship can identify a woman when a face cannot. The Egyptian Museum in Cairo catalogues a limestone relief titled Limestone Relief of Akhenaten, Nefertiti and Two Princesses Worshipping the Aten, found in the royal tomb at Amarna. The title itself supplies a strong identification framework: the adult queen is Nefertiti, and the smaller figures are princesses in a scene that names the royal family’s roles.

For a suspected Ankhesenamun, look for a princess identified in relation to Nefertiti or for evidence connecting her to Tutankhamun. For a suspected Kiya, check whether the scene or caption links her to a daughter and to Akhenaten as a secondary wife. Do not infer a woman’s identity simply because she occupies the “queen” position in a composition; captions and inscriptions carry the decisive information.

3. Separate name forms from separate people

Ankhesenpaaten and Ankhesenamun are not two different royal women in this identification problem. The Berlin museum catalogue explicitly equates the names and identifies the woman as Tutankhamun’s wife. When comparing objects, note the spelling used on each object and the period in which it appears. A name change can explain why the same individual seems to disappear from one set of records and reappear under another name.

Nefertiti and Kiya, by contrast, are distinct women with different recorded positions in Akhenaten’s household. A damaged inscription that preserves only a title or a few signs should not be expanded into a full name without acknowledging the gap.

4. Treat crowns and headdresses as clues, not identity badges

Royal headgear can help you compare images, but it cannot function as a universal key. Belén del Barrio Madruga’s 2023 article in Eikón / Imago examines changes in Nefertiti’s crowns and headdresses through Amarna iconography. The point of that work is historical: changing regalia can track Nefertiti’s changing importance and presentation. It does not establish one crown that belongs only to Nefertiti, one that belongs only to Kiya, or a rule that identifies every princess.

Use a crown only after recording the inscription, scene partners, and findspot. Describe what is actually visible—such as a tall crown, a different headdress, or a damaged top—rather than turning an uncertain reconstruction into a certainty about the sitter.

5. Check the findspot and the object’s history

Provenance can support an attribution, but it can also expose complications. The KV 55 jar came from the Valley of the Kings, yet material associated with Amarna was moved and reused. The Met’s account of the jar and lid shows how an object can retain an inscription from one owner while carrying a lid that may have originated in another person’s burial equipment.

Ask five questions: Where was the object found? Was it in its original deposit? Does the inscription belong to the visible face or to a reused component? Are there signs of erasure or recarving? Does the museum catalogue describe the attribution as secure, probable, or disputed? These questions prevent a findspot from being treated as proof when the object has a complicated afterlife.

6. State the level of certainty

A useful identification has a confidence level. “Named by a surviving cartouche” is different from “suggested by a crown,” and both differ from “assigned by resemblance.” If the evidence conflicts, report the conflict. The KV 55 record is not a failure to identify an object; it is evidence that the original owner cannot be recovered with certainty from the altered remains.

Nefertiti: the Great Royal Wife

Nefertiti’s strongest identifier is her formal position. The Berlin museum catalogue describes her as Akhenaten’s Great Royal Wife and emphasizes her exceptional participation alongside him in religious and state-supporting ceremonies. Her regalia is distinctive enough to be studied as a historical subject, but it still has to be interpreted in context.

The same catalogue lists six daughters, including Ankhesenpaaten, the woman later known as Ankhesenamun. When a relief shows Akhenaten with a named queen and several daughters, the family relationship is more useful than an attempt to match the queen’s face to a famous bust. A scene that names Nefertiti, or that fits this documented family arrangement, provides a stronger basis for identification.

The unfinished Cairo head illustrates an important qualification. It came from a workshop at Tell el-Amarna and was intended for a composite statue. The museum calls it an idealized royal figure. Even a securely identified Nefertiti image therefore reflects an artistic program, not necessarily her unaltered physical appearance.

Ankhesenamun: recognize the earlier name

In Amarna-period material, search first for Ankhesenpaaten. The Berlin catalogue equates that name with Ankhesenamun, identifies her as Tutankhamun’s wife, and places her among Nefertiti’s daughters. This combination of names and relationships is the safest way to recognize her.

A small female figure in a royal scene is not automatically Ankhesenamun. Amarna reliefs can include several princesses, and a damaged or unnamed figure may not be individually recoverable. Look for a caption, a family grouping that the catalogue can support, or a later record that connects Ankhesenpaaten with Ankhesenamun. Without that evidence, call the figure an unidentified princess rather than choosing the most famous daughter.

Kiya: a secondary wife with a disputed visual record

Kiya was a secondary wife of Akhenaten. The Berlin catalogue records the title “Beloved, great wife of the king” and shows her in representations associated with a daughter. That title makes it especially important to read the complete context: the catalogue’s description of her as a secondary wife is part of the identification, and the title alone should not be treated as interchangeable with Nefertiti’s documented status as Great Royal Wife.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Kiya is central to the KV 55 warning. Faint inscription traces on the canopic jar point to her as the original owner, but the lid was altered and may have come from Tiye’s burial equipment. The face has consequently been assigned to multiple women. If you encounter a claim that “the KV 55 face is Kiya,” check whether it is referring to the faint jar inscription, the lid’s sculpted features, or a modern attribution. Those are different kinds of evidence.

How to read a royal scene without overidentifying it

Use a scene in layers:

  1. Identify the setting. Is it a temple, tomb, workshop, or another royal context? The Cairo relief is associated with the royal tomb at Amarna.
  2. Read the caption or title. A museum title naming Akhenaten, Nefertiti, and two princesses is stronger than an observer’s visual guess.
  3. Map the relationships. Note the king, queen, princesses, attendants, and the direction of worship or offering.
  4. Record regalia separately. A crown or headdress may show how a woman was presented at a particular moment, not identify her in every image.
  5. Check the object’s condition. Erasure, recarving, missing sections, or composite construction lowers confidence.

This method also prevents a common error: treating every female figure near Akhenaten as Nefertiti. The royal household included more than one wife and several daughters, and the surviving art does not give every figure an equally clear label.

A practical evidence matrix

Evidence What it can establish What it cannot establish by itself
Complete cartouche or caption A named individual, provided the inscription belongs to the object and has not been replaced That every visible component was made for the named person
Royal title A woman’s documented position, such as Great Royal Wife or secondary wife A unique face or a complete biography
Scene relationship Family and ritual roles when the scene is named or securely contextualized The identity of an unnamed princess solely from size or position
Crown or headdress How a queen was represented in a particular artistic context A universal identification rule for all Amarna women
Findspot Archaeological context and possible links to a burial or workshop Original ownership when material was moved or reused
Facial resemblance A hypothesis worth testing against stronger evidence Secure identification

Common mistakes and their corrections

Mistake: treating a famous face as a name

Correction: Locate the inscription and ask whether the face and inscription belong to the same original object. The altered KV 55 jar demonstrates why this check matters.

Mistake: treating Ankhesenpaaten and Ankhesenamun as different daughters

Correction: Use the Berlin catalogue’s equivalence. Record both forms when searching or cataloguing, but count them as names for the same woman in this context.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Mistake: assuming every queen’s title has the same meaning

Correction: Preserve the full title and the catalogue’s description. Kiya’s recorded “Beloved, great wife of the king” title does not erase the catalogue’s identification of her as a secondary wife, while Nefertiti is specifically described as the Great Royal Wife.

Mistake: using a crown as a password

Correction: Compare crowns historically and alongside inscriptions. The 2023 study of Nefertiti’s changing headdresses supports contextual analysis, not a one-crown-per-woman rule.

Mistake: ignoring reuse

Correction: Examine the object’s construction and archaeological history. A jar, lid, statue element, or relief may have been altered or incorporated into a new setting.

A short checklist for captions, museum labels, and online images

  • Copy the exact name or title that survives, including alternate spellings.
  • Record whether the figure is identified as Nefertiti, Ankhesenpaaten/Ankhesenamun, Kiya, or only as an unnamed royal woman.
  • List the people shown with the figure and the relationship the caption establishes.
  • Separate the object’s date from its discovery date. The KV 55 jar is dated approximately 1347–1330 BCE and was discovered in 1907; those are different facts.
  • Note the findspot, especially whether the material came from Amarna, KV 55, or a workshop.
  • Look for erasure, recarving, unfinished surfaces, composite construction, or reused parts.
  • Label visual impressions as suggestions, never as proof.
  • Write “uncertain” when the evidence is genuinely incomplete.

What the evidence can and cannot tell you

The available records support firm distinctions in status and naming: Nefertiti was Akhenaten’s Great Royal Wife; Ankhesenpaaten and Ankhesenamun refer to the same daughter who became Tutankhamun’s wife; and Kiya was a secondary wife associated with a daughter and with a faint inscription on the KV 55 jar. They do not support a universal facial-feature test or a rule assigning every crown to one woman.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The most responsible label may therefore be conditional: “identified by inscription,” “identified by scene relationship,” “probable,” or “disputed.” That wording is not evasive. It reflects the condition of the surviving objects, especially when ancient alterations and modern reconstruction have separated a face from its original name.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s exhibition catalogue The Royal Women of Amarna: Images of Beauty from Ancient Egypt is a relevant reference for readers who want a broader treatment of royal women and Amarna imagery. Museum catalogues from Berlin and Cairo, together with the 2023 scholarly study of female crowns and headdresses in Amarna iconography, are particularly useful because they keep titles, relationships, regalia, and object history in view at the same time.
