A smart Ethernet switch can give you wired-network controls your gaming router may not expose—such as VLANs, port-level priority, and port mirroring. It does not replace the router, and the available sources do not show that adding one reduces gaming latency. The useful comparison is about different jobs, not a guaranteed performance upgrade.
What does a managed switch do?
A switch connects wired devices on the same local network and forwards traffic between them. A smart switch adds configuration options for that wired traffic. For example, the TP-Link TL-SG105E is a five-port Gigabit Easy Smart Switch whose US product page lists VLAN, QoS, IGMP snooping, static link aggregation, port mirroring, cable diagnostics, and loop prevention. It has five 10/100/1000 Mbps RJ45 ports and fanless construction. TP-Link lists hardware versions V1, V4, and V5, so check the revision of the specific unit before relying on version-specific details.
These controls apply to the local wired network. The switch does not route between your LAN and the internet, provide Wi-Fi, or take over router functions such as DHCP. If you only need more Ethernet ports, an unmanaged switch may be sufficient; smart-switch features are useful when you have a specific configuration or monitoring need.

QoS means quality of service, but the label covers controls at different points in the network. NETGEAR says that on its Nighthawk Pro Gaming routers, QoS lets users allocate bandwidth to specific devices. That is a statement about NETGEAR’s own router family, not a universal description of gaming routers. NETGEAR explains its router QoS feature here.
#1 Best Overall
- PLUG-AND-PLAY GIGABIT MANAGED SWITCH: 8 x 1Gbps auto-negotiating ports work the moment you plug in — full-gigabit speed over Cat5e/Cat6 cabling.
- MANAGED, WITHOUT THE COMPLEXITY: Easy Smart web GUI on Windows, Mac or Linux — no app or Windows-only utility, unlike many competing switches.
- SEGMENT & PRIORITIZE TRAFFIC: Up to 64 VLANs, QoS, IGMP snooping and port mirroring keep voice, video and data fast, secure and organized.
- BUILT-IN PROTECTION: Auto DoS prevention, loop detection, broadcast storm control and cable test keep your network stable and easy to troubleshoot.
- RELIABLE 24/7 BACKBONE: Rugged fanless metal housing runs cool and silent at 0 dBA — the managed switch trusted in homes, offices and small business.
The TL-SG105E product page lists port-based and 802.1p/DSCP priority and rate controls. These are switch-side options for handling Ethernet traffic at the switch. They are not interchangeable with a router’s controls over traffic at the internet gateway. The right setting depends on where congestion occurs and what the equipment supports; having a QoS option does not by itself establish that games will feel more responsive.
Can a managed switch reduce gaming lag?
There is no measured latency reduction established for adding a managed switch in the cited sources. A switch can provide traffic-management controls, but that is not proof of lower ping or less lag. Results depend on the network bottleneck, the router and switch capabilities, and configuration. The switch also does not increase the speed of your internet plan.

- GIGABIT ETHERNET PORTS: Features 5 x 1.0Gbps Ethernet ports for high-speed connectivity. Auto-negotiating ports detect the optimal speed for connected devices and work with existing Cat5e or Cat6 Ethernet cables.
- EASY SMART MANAGED NETWORK SWITCH: Intuitive software interface offers Easy Smart Managed Essentials capabilities to configure VLANs, prioritize traffic with QoS, monitor ports, and manage network security for small businesses.
- FLEXIBLE MOUNTING OPTIONS: Compact metal design supports desktop or wall-mount placement for versatile installation.
- SILENT & ENERGY-EFFICIENT OPERATION: Fanless design ensures silent performance, while IEEE 802.3az Energy Efficient Ethernet reduces power consumption without compromising high-speed network performance.
- REGIONAL COMPATIBILITY: Made for use in U.S. & CA only
If your goal is to solve a gaming problem, first identify whether it occurs on the local wired network, over Wi-Fi, or on the internet connection. A smart switch is most relevant when you need its wired-LAN features—not simply because a product is marketed for gaming.

A switch can assign or tag traffic in VLANs, but it does not create a complete internet-connected, routed network on its own. For devices in separate VLANs to reach the internet or communicate under controlled rules, the router or another Layer 3 device must support the required VLAN interfaces, routing, and DHCP behavior. The link between the switch and router may need to be configured as a trunk that carries the relevant VLANs.

- 8 Gigabit Ethernet Ports: Expand your network with 8 high-speed ethernet ports for enhanced connectivity and performance
- Easy Smart Management: Manage and configure your network effortlessly via a web interface or free software
- Support VLAN: Segment traffic with up to 32 VLANs simultaneously out of 4K VLAN IDs for better security
- Network Monitoring: Monitor your network effectively with port mirroring, loop prevention, and cable diagnostics
- IGMP Snooping: Enhances multicast application performance for improved network efficiency
NETGEAR advises planning which devices need to communicate before deciding where to place equipment and cables; it also describes a trunk port as a connection between a switch and a router or another switch that participates in multiple VLANs. See NETGEAR’s VLAN setup guidance. VLAN separation does not automatically make a network secure: isolation depends on correct configuration and routing policy.

When is a smart switch worth considering?
- Consider one if you need VLAN configuration, switch-side traffic priority, port mirroring, or other listed management features on wired devices.
- Check your router first if you plan to use VLANs; confirm it supports the intended topology and can handle the routing and DHCP requirements.
- Check the exact model and revision before purchase. The cited TL-SG105E page lists multiple hardware versions, and current price and availability are not established here.
- Choose a simpler switch if your only requirement is connecting more wired devices and you do not need configuration or monitoring features.
